Sarah Palin managed to get Roe v. Wade, but was stumped when asked to name any other Supreme Court decisions. In the spirit of remembering that there is more to law than that one case, I am participating in this meme.

My case: Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier
Summary: The principal of Hazelwood East High School outside St. Louis, Mo., censored from the student newspaper a special teen issue section that included articles on teen pregnancy and the impact of divorce on students that he found objectionable. Members of the student staff sued. The U.S District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri held that students' First Amendment rights were not violated, 607 F.Supp. 1450. The students appealed. The U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the District Court decision, 795 F.2d 1368, primarily relying on the Supreme Court’s 1969 decision in Tinker v. Des Moines. The Supreme Court reversed the Court of Appeals decision and held that a high school-sponsored newspaper produced as part of a class and without a “policy or practice” establishing it as a public forum for student expression could be censored where school officials demonstrated a reasonable educational justification and where their censorship was viewpoint neutral.
I was the senior editor of my high school yearbook when this passed. It was huge for me. It solidified my dedication to protecting free speech for everyone, even people with whom I disagree.
And anyone who thinks school officials are viewpoint neutral about anything is a fool. I haven't forgiven the Court for this one. Can't imagine I ever will.
This morning, one of the secretaries in another department put out a call to the Wescoe admin staff (about 12 secretaries total) asking people to join in a Secret Santa exchange for the holidays. I'm opposed to the whole Secret Santa thing for numerous reasons, so I sent out this email as a response:
I like the idea of using the holiday season to form a sense of camaraderie between the staff in Wescoe. However, in today's economic climate, I don't feel comfortable spending $15 on un-requested gifts for someone who may not appreciate what I chose.
I would like to put forward the suggestion that we all chip in $15 or $20 each and adopt a family. I realize with so few of us, we wouldn't be able to provide very much, or even adopt an entire family, but I think we could raise at least $200, and that would go a long way to making a child's holiday cheerful.
I will be happy to coordinate this if there is enough interest.
We'll see how that goes over. Regardless of if the majority rules to still do the Secret Santa, though, I'm not going to participate in it. I'll simply donate my money to another group, like the Community Mercantile, who is sponsoring a family for the season. Me and my stupid principles, ruining everyone's fun.
