Disconcertingly inappropriate

I'm listening to my Netscape Radio today (ah! Glorious relief from 104 Classic Country), tuned to the New Wave station. Going along fine with Depeche Mode, the Creatures, Flock of Seagulls, etc., and then all of a sudden: The Stray Cats. WTF?

Not that I'm anti-Brian Setzer/Stray Cats like lots of rockabillies. Heck we even have two Stray Cats albums at home. But Stray Cats on the New Wave station? That was just wrong. Ok, now we're progressing to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.

In other exciting news:

Which Food Network Chef
are you?

oh, I dunno, if they're playing all the rest of the post-punk and new wave, then Brian Setzer's band definitely fits into that category, coming out of the New York scene and making his name in London during that era. IIRC, the term New Wave defined anyone during that time who was bucking the standing rock scene.

OK, so what I don't get is why rockabillies would be anti the guy who started the whole revival in the first place? Can you splain for me?

Well, there are a few camps on that one: One, of course, is that they sold out (i.e. got popular--the killing blow for any underground group). Another camp says he went too glam with the eyeliner and hair (nancy boys are not too popular in the rockabilly world). Others say that he'll just do whatever style of music is popular at the time (pointing to his big band albums). Some would also have issues with the idea that he started the revival when there were lots of other people doing rockabilly at the same time (The Blasters, the Rockats) who didn't get the publicity.

Whatever. It's silly and gets argued into the freakin' ground on any rockabilly list. Which is one of the reasons I've (sadly) unsubbed from all my rockabilly listservs. It's the equivalent of the tribal/cabaret harangue. Bleh.

ahhh. I wondered if it was the "sold-out" argument.
Gotta love human nature, eh?
I always loved the Stray Cats either way.

I'll see you tomorrow night! Hoping to make it to Kelley Hunt tonight...whoo-hoo!

I have to disagree with you on one tiny thing-Setzer didn't "start" the neo rockabilly movement-it was going strong in England in the WAY before he came along.Thats why he had to get success there before he came back to the US.

I don't think it was the eyeliner that make people dislike him,(most New Wave musicians wore eyeliner then LOL) I think it was definately the sell out aspect. does anyone remember the neo country shit he did in the late 80's??? then he jumped on the Swing band wagon. Some RAB folk are such purists about not straying from the pack. Personally-I don't care, if I enjoy the music thats all I care about.
I love the analogy of cabaret vs tribal its SO dead on!! I love to mix it all up and have fun!

I see what you mean... I was referring to him in this country, as far as rockabilly. His was the first I ever heard over here.

I'm with you.. music is like wine..
Good wine is wine that I like, same with music.

totally!!! When we got done with our partying last night they had on a Brian SetzerOrchestra show on-bits of video from them on tour in Japan. I think RAB people get all pissy cause he didn't stay "true" to his rockabilly roots-or whatever. But he puts on a fun show-soif the snobs don't want to enjoythat just makes more dancing room for me!!! and HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU !!!!

OMG, omd? hahaha! Andy McCluskey used to date a girl from San Diego back in the mid/late 80s. They used to go to this nifty floating underground club whenever he was in town. Nobody bothered him and he seemed like a nice enough fella but he could NOT dance. We're talking NO rhythm. Poor guy.

I like the Stray Cats. They were entertaining to watch and Brian is a good guitar player, I think.

Oh yeah, anyone see that commercial with Tones on Tail blaring in the background? yayayayayayayayayaaaa... I gotta dig through my record collection and see if I still have that damn single!
