It's a good day

Nothing like starting off the day with Great News. From an email that went out from HR this morning:

Governor Sebelius has announced an additional state holiday on Friday, December 26, 2008. In designating the holiday, the Governor stated it was to show "appreciation for the hard work you do throughout the year. Through your commitment to public service, we will continue to make Kansas a better place live, work and raise a family."

Yay! It means that Monday, December 29th is going to be a killer for me with the application materials that have piled up over the four-day weekend, but who cares? Free four day weekend, baby!

Instead of exercising, I went to the grocery store this morning to stock up on plain meat and vegetables. I love going to the grocery store early in the morning. It's so empty, and all the produce is happy and colorful and well-stocked. We'll see what a week of eating simply does for my system. I'll do my work-out this evening (it's possible that I won't have a car tonight, so I figured I'd better get food while I had the certainty of wheels).

Oh, by the way [livejournal.com profile] renniemom, I was wrong on the name of the diuretic pills I take. It's these. I took one this morning, have already peed three times, and am feeling less tortured by my waistbands. Diuretics are not something to take regularly, but they help so much when you're super uncomfortable from water retention.

Daddy's in KC today and tomorrow and I'm hoping to make it there tomorrow to have lunch with him. It might be tricky since most of the office is going to be out for a funeral. I'm hoping the chair (who will be attending the funeral) will agree to just shut down the office for the afternoon. *crosses fingers*

Here's a confession: I absolutely love this CD. It makes no artistic statements, nor does it break any musical ground. It's not breathtaking in its originality. There is absolutely nothing on here that hasn't been done before. But oh my goodness, this band manages to make standard verse-chorus-verse-bridge power-pop into something delightful, clever, and occasionally creepy. It's one of my favorite albums of the year. If you're looking for some ear fluff, give this CD a try. Oh, and bonus--they're from St. Louis. Midwestern Boys!

Check out this fabulous letter generator. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cmt2779 for the tip on that website.

I want to go dancing.

Wooo Hooo! We haven't gotten the official word here yet, but I was expecting it. The smarter governors for the last few years have been giving us these extra days when the Christmas holiday falls on a tuesday or thursday.

I'm with you; Hooray for a 4-day weekend!!!

Two four-day weekends two months in a row, after a three-paycheck month? RAWK.

I've been particularly enjoying "Lake Pontchartrain" lately. :D

I'm amazed at how really good they are with lyrics, even when they're being silly.

"You’ve been known to obsess over the future
Do you think you’ll get away from the past?
As you starve yourself just to make it through ‘til midnight
Consider what you might have found.
You think you’ve got a good thing now."
--Topeka

I mean come on! That's fab!

[identity profile] tessagratton.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally. I keep pausing to really listen, and that's so nice to find. Other favorite lyric song is "Streetlights."

When the streetlights
Come on the pooling night
Is levied aside
And pressed in twilight
Against our two rooms
I'll see you tonight

The pavement is aching
Cicadas are crying
The wine colored air
Breathing thoughts
Through your hair
Breezing to me
Leading me there

I'm sad to see that their first CD is probably out of print. I'm considering ordering it from one of the secondary Amazon vendors. I mean, if it's half as good as this one...

You can listen to it on their website (http://www.ludorock.com/discography/detail.aspx?pid=11783).

Oooo! Hey, thanks. As soon as I'm done listening to "You're Awful" for the third time this morning, I'll head over there.

I finally let go
And learned to live without you
After all those weeks alone
But now you're back for more
I'm trying to fight it off
But there's a mutiny below

Because we all know we're ruled by what's in our pants. That ranks up with the sexy subtlety of my favorite Melissa Etheridge lyric:
"And I realized my heart had abducted my mind
And they were last seen headed south"

WIN!

I wondered if your Dad was part of the huge motivational seminar.. yay!

I get to take Friday the 28th off, but it's only paid if I take a vacation day. damn these small companies.

Oh! I have no idea...there's a huge motivational seminar going on in KC? Huh! Maybe!

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Saw a bit on it this morning.. at the Sprint Center, something like 20,000 attendees. Folks like Colin Powell are there. Saw him pump his fist and do the Yes We DID, it was priceless!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. I'll have to ask him, provided I get to make it to KC tomorrow.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, no, Daddy wasn't a part of that. He was doing a workshop for a Teacher's Association.

They weren't giving you the day off already? Wow. Juco finds it cheaper to shut the college down and save energy costs over the entire winter break.
