This really isn't how I wanted to wake up

Hm. Thunder, rain. A bit of hail. Crazy-ass winds (up to 60mph). Severe weather alert. Supposed to expire in three minutes, but I don't think it's going to dissapate anytime soon.

Oh, good. KCUR just told me about a tornado warning until 5:00 a.m.

Should I make coffee now, in case we lose electricity, or should I hope it blows over (har har) and try to go back to sleep if the warnings aren't extended?

I think it's very likely that I won't be going anywhere today. Unless of course, the house blows away, in which case I might be spending the rest of my four-day weekend in a public shelter somewhere.

UPDATE: OK, well, apparently the storm has moved on but the tornado alert remains in effect and might even be extended until noon. NOON? There's still a bit of thunder and lightning, but the winds have died down a bit. Yay, freezing rain expected today. With a possibility of turning to snow.

UPDATE 2: Good god. The storm has moved to KC and is building winds of up to over eighty miles per hour. Apparently that's strong enough to overturn vehicles. Good luck, Kansas City. And, er, good luck to my friends who have plans that involve travel in the KC area. *cough*

Hm. Still thundering.

I compromised on the hot beverage situation and made cocoa.

I'm one of those freaks that is loving this :)

It is suppose to be sunny and in the upper 40s tomorrow, so anything wintry from today will disappear.

It's all very exciting! I just didn't want to deal with the ice crap. If it's supposed to melt quickly, that makes me feel a lot better.

[identity profile] socialdragnfly.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Holding on for dear life!!

[identity profile] pms-inc.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well that was a special kinda crazy! Came out this morning fully expecting the carport to have fallen on my truck, but it held!

[identity profile] nataliesee.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Whew! I'm sure glad I slept through that!

I don't know much about tornados but I thought winter was the wrong season for them.

I'm glad you're okay.

[identity profile] lightonthesill.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Woke up this morning when a GIANT gust came through, thought for sure a tree was coming down. Then briefly lost power. Seems to be all very reasonable now. Just a little thunder, lightening and rain. But WOWZERS about the time you made this post it was intense!

[identity profile] fireguarder.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
We were also awakened by the thunder and wind. Did it hail, too? It sure sounded like it for a bit there. We've postponed our plans of taking my brother to the WW I museum in KC until tomorrow, although we sort of had to convince my dad that the weather was not likely to be good enough today. Icy rain warning in KC until 4pm. Tomorrow it's supposed to be in the 40s.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I hear KC got hit worse. Hope you're OK!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Very glad to hear that. *whew*! Good carport. You shold give it a pat.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't believe you slept through that!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It's totally the wrong season, but it's not completely unheard of. Especially with the wacky temp changes of the past week.

All seems OK so far, but I haven't put shoes on yet to check out back to look at the cars...

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoah! I can't believe I'm "missing" this. Everything okay? Carport's still there? KU is still intact?

Not surprising, though, with a 60-degree temperature swing....

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was nutty. I guess KC got it worse, though, so I hope all's ok at your place.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, we got some hail but it wasn't bad. I was hoping to get out and about today, but am rethinking those plans...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't gone out to check yet. I wanted to get coffee in me first. Of course! I assume all's OK up on the hill, but I will laugh my ass off if that air handler system on top of Wescoe got damaged.

[identity profile] pms-inc.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Last spring a strong straight wind blew through the North KC area producing a tornado in Gladstone, knocking down 2 heavy wooden carports at our apt complex- one under which was my 4-Runner of course!!! A taller pickup took the brunt of the damage (my hero). So, it was a HUGE relief to see all was well. Hope everyone else fared as well.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, well everything in our area looks fine. Although you can probably be glad that you took those dead trees out.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking the same thing, myself. Thanks for checking!

[identity profile] socialdragnfly.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't get much damage!! I believe in Santa!!

[identity profile] kalimeg.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I slept through it, so it was not all that loud.

:)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
it was not all that loud.

My cat and I would argue that, I think.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)

Yes, poor YMirs is a wreck this morning. he's scared to death of storms and this was just wrong in his little walnut-sized brain.

[identity profile] verminiusrex.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The wind and distant lightening started up while I was shopping around 11pm or so last night (because, you know, it's important to get wheat bran at 11pm for your morning baking experiment...ok, maybe it's just me.)

When it kicked up in the AM hours I woke and every creak from the house made me think something had broken loose. Made me want to have some big ropes to just tie down the whole house and call it good enough.

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
We saw the lightening on the way home last night. I was in bed at 12 and at 4 woke up to the storm. PDA was up and I thought the storm had woken him. Turns out he was Just Coming To Bed. Mtn Dew and Miniatures kept him up. I heard the storm and just rolled over and slept some more. No big deal here, though our deck is all icy. And last night it was 65 degrees and our friends GRILLED OUT BURGERS. My first ever Christmas BBQ. I left my coat in the car!

[identity profile] grnvixen.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
The winds woke me up when they came through around 4:30 am but we only had small limbs down at out place. Saw more damage when I went over to visit my mom. An old redbud tree in their back fence lost the two main branches but their roof was allright. We had a brief power interruption, a sister in KC had theirs out for awhile. Watching the reports of damage on the evening news but, all in all, it could have been worse.

[identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
The very loud winds woke us and set off [livejournal.com profile] gamera_spinning's truck alarm. We also noted that our power was out. That was 5:00 A.M. The power was out until 2:00 P.M.

Wow, that's a long time to be without power when it's cold. Hope you all didn't freeze.

[identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It was quite a while. We cheated though...after I called in the power outage, we slept in a bit...then we went out for breakfast at The Corner in Westport (to get warm) and then ran a couple of errands...after we got back I called KCP&L back to make sure they had logged the outage (they told me they had but that 25,000 people had lights out so they'd get to us as soon as possible)...the only reason we got lights about an hour after that call is that they figured out that it was a downed power line (a cop car was standing vigil over it to keep people away)...once they knew that it was a priority fix.

By the time the power came on, the house was down to 40 degrees. I'm just grateful that we really didn't lose a bunch of food, as it stayed cold enough to keep the frozen stuff frozen and we didn't open the fridge.
