Prattle

Coffee drinkers: Tell me you don't want to go try some of these variants on coffee-brewing right now.

This morning I heard mutterings in the hallway about the possibility of English office staff positions getting cut. That's not good. At all.

Anyone else follow Dr. Boli's Celebrated Magazine? Sometimes it's great and sometimes I just sort of scratch my head at it. Locals (and [livejournal.com profile] rorschachsix and [livejournal.com profile] alt_rorschach) should check out this particular entry, at least.

I made it to yoga last night. It was blissful, if a little crowded with ten people there (including me). I was able to do a shoulder stand, no problem. Yay! Tried to do a headstand without my support device thingy. Not so yay.

Like always, my right shoulder popped out of joint and I collapsed onto my head. I was quick enough to roll out of it, so my neck is fine. I don't think an unassisted headstand is in my future. I love my flexible shoulders, and I'm not willing to trade that for stability. No matter how much stretching I do after a strength-training session, when those muscles reach a certain level of strength, I notice a decrease in range of motion. Ah, well. That's why I have this guy.

Have you wondered about using brandy or bourbon instead of water for this step yet?

I believe the correct answer to this is YES, YES PLEASE!

O_o

Have you wondered about using brandy or bourbon instead of water for this step yet?

O_o

*melts*

[identity profile] tessagratton.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL. I think it's special that Lydia's friends pull out the exact same alcoholic line. :D

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I have both of them at my house. Just sayin'.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the best friends evar.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I look forward to hearing your analysis.

[identity profile] slinka.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
My friend in Ireland uses maple syrup exclusively to sweeten his coffee. He tells me if I try it, I'll never go back to sugar. I'm not quite ready for that kind of love affair yet.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Did. Not. Need. To. Know.

Oh man oh man oh man can you imagine the bourbon-steeped coffee method sweetened with maple syrup? I'm getting a little teary-eyed just thinking about it.

[identity profile] adammaker.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
And we all need some alcoholic coffee.
This would improve my day!

[identity profile] adammaker.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
If we ever have a coffee experimentation party, we should start Early in the Day.

[identity profile] adammaker.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I like a drizzle of blackstrap molasses and running the hot coffee briefly through a blender.

::stares in dumbfounded stupification::

When you have your coffee experimentation part, INVITE ME!

[identity profile] slinka.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, that sounds way too delicious and I'm going to try that next Sunday morning.

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't lose when you cruise with Stu's!

Awesome! I'm going to have to repost that.

Also, coffee preparation:
Have you wondered about using brandy or bourbon instead of water for this step yet?

I am now! It's not like I go anywhere for work.

[identity profile] annamatic.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I was JUST about to say this. Mmmmmmmm. Bourbon-bloomed coffee, with a ground-up vanilla bean pod ground up along with, please. OMG.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Darling, you are invited anytime you can make it up here.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought of you when I saw that, too!!!

I have a feeling we're all going to be a little boozy this Saturday morning.

Hmmm...

[identity profile] femfataleatron.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Shoulder joins are tricksy... Shoulders dislocate and injure, in almost all cases, because of scapular instability not deltoid weakness. If the Rhomboids and lower traps are weak (or conversely the serratus and pec minor) the scapula can "wing" (or fail to rotate to the anterior enough) and allow for humeral dislocation. Obviously There are many individual differences in these things, but pulling exercises of these sorts are probably the least common in average exercise routines, particularly those involving calisthenics (cause doing a bodyweight shrug is kind of awkward).

[identity profile] annamatic.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Add a vanilla bean pod to the grinder. Then all that together? Buh. Guh.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I should have you look at my shoulder mobility requirements (how my shoulders move now) so you can assess where is my major issue with the out-of-joint-poppingness.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That's an expensive pot of coffee you're making there, sister!

[identity profile] skyflame.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Tony Bourdain did a Montreal show some time back and visited a guy who has a lumberjack-themed restaurant out in the woods somewhere. Every dish on the menu is flavored with maple syrup. Every. Single. One.

one mobility test and...

[identity profile] femfataleatron.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
A great way to fix many shoulder problems: Get a strap that is ~as long as you are tall, hold one end in each hand and hold it over your head. Your body and arms will form flat sort of Y. (like the motions to that village people song, only with a strap.) Gently rotate your unbent arms back over your head in a tight circle, keeping tension on the strap, until the strap meets your lower back. If it's too easy, move your hands in, If it's too hard move your hands apart. Repeat like Fitty times. Progress by slowly moving your hands closer together...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I can do that holding a strap with my arms shoulder width apart. All the way from hands in front of hips, up and over the top of my head til my hands are behind my butt without bending my elbows or letting go of the strap. So very nearly 360 degrees, straight out from my shoulder.

Mobility isn't the problem. Maintaining that level of flexibility while gaining strength is the problem.

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Some one invite me for coffee. All I have is a Mr. Coffee pot and all I can afford right now is folgers. (sad shrew)

[identity profile] femfataleatron.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Flexibility and strength are not mutually exclusive. Flexibility, or lack thereof, results from a neurological loop between three nodes, nerves called proprioceptors, nerves called Golgi organs and your spine. The Golgi organs and proprioceptors responsible for any given reflex loop are necessarily located in several different muscle groups. If one of those muscle groups gets stronger while others, say an antagonist muscle, do not, then the loop diminishes flexibility to avoid injury. So, ask yourself: What is the antagonist muscle to your deltoids? Your range of motion, coupled with lack of stability, is a good indicator that there is some sort of Thoraco-scapular weakness, rather than a Gleno-humeral problem or any sort of particular damage. By Thoraco-scapular I mean the part of you shoulder that shrugs and slouches, rather than the gleno-humeral, the one that does the chicken dance... (since I seem to be on that theme). A stronger or bigger muscle can still stretch to the same degree as a thin or weak muscle.Strength too has a substantial neurological component but , that is another dicussion

My only regret is that I did not see this post BEFORE I made my morning coffee. *swoons*

When's your next free weekend? Email me.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Tomorrow is another day.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
So, ask yourself: What is the antagonist muscle to your deltoids?

Can't I just ask you? I think you'd come up with a faster answer.

[identity profile] femfataleatron.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
hehe. The basic answer is a s#it load or none, or it depends on the movement. Joints either require stability or mobility to operate properly (knee=stability, hip=mobility etc.), the annoying joint in question needs both. You've got mobility in spades, but your stability is maybe not so good. Nadia Comanche would say you can be plenty flexible and do handstands all day, as long as you "love Ukraine!" What she meant by "love Ukraine!" is do pushups with progressively elevated feet (or hips) and supplementary overhead pulling and rowing! The Strappy thing you mentioned in a previous post would be great for those, or an adjustable pullup bar. I saw one at target for like 10 bucks.

see how i snuck in another 70's pop culture reference! I'm sooooooo hyouge!

Yes. You get a perfect 10.

Coffeeeeeeee

It's funny b/c when I had Lucky Cat, we'd encourage people to put maple syrup in their iced coffee (if we liked them, cuz that shit is much more expensive than simple syrup!). MMMMMMM

I put flavored agave in mine these days.

I like the salt idea!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking about making the move to agave in my coffee...but right now I'm still kind of obsessed with counting calories.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried the salt this morning, but I wasn't able to tell much difference. It was just cheapo salt, though. Tomorrow I'll try it with kosher salt.
