Crush

While browsing the archives of an LJ comm, I saw an icon of Michael Palin and thought "awwww..."

It made me wonder--how many teenage girls, in 1985, got hot and bothered when thinking about Galahad in Castle Anthrax? If we leave out the rabid cult of Duran Duran (which had its own problems with acceptability), my teenage libido struck on at least two strange choices.

Michael Palin

and

Steve Martin

How many other people, as nerdy teenagers, had crushes that would have been deemed freakish by their non-nerd peers? Fess up, you card-carrying members of the geek show. What unlikely candidates inhabited your early, awkward fantasies?

In my case, the Who's Pete Townsend. I think that's right where I got my nose thing.

D.

He wasn't a particularly geeky crush, but I think 1985 (or thereabouts) was when I discovered -- thanks to Rutger Hauer in Ladyhawke -- the effect the sound of leather armor had on my panties. Surprise!

My first crush was on the already deceased Sabu.

this guy...

Ha! Yeah, that brings up a whole 'nother topic, doesn't it? =D

[identity profile] renniemom.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Then and now...Jeff Goldblum.
Of course I also had a complete nerdy crush on Geddy Lee, of RUSH.

I'm with you!

Oh my god! I crushed on Gene Wilder, too! I didn't wanna take up too much space with the pictures in my post, so I only kept it to two. He would've been the third, though. HA!

Yeah, he's adorable.

Eeeeee!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
How funny! I kinda had it for Mr. Goldblum, too. Tall, skinny, big nose. Yeah.

I remember staying up late and sneaking down to the basement to watch Into the Night (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089346/) on HBO after my parents went to bed.

I kinda liked Dan Aykroyd too, so that movie was a double win.

YES. There we go. And Barishnikov.

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Um this icon does not lie. I was hot for Spock. I rooted for Nurse Chapel because her name was Christine.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think lusting after Barishnikov was that unlikely for a teenager in the 80s, though. I mean, it was hard to argue with the sexiness of this:

BTW, I had that issue of People. For years.

You know, I never recognized Uhura as a source of inspiration for my old haircut. But looking at that icon, she totally was.

I haven't talked with you about it yet, but can I guess that you liked the take on that relationship in the latest movie?

[identity profile] renniemom.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh oh oh. Jon Cryer--the Pretty In Pink Days. He's still kinda cute but the nerd factor in the 80s was part of the charm for me. Ducky...sigh

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I did, I liked everything about the movie. But part of me thought no wonder poor Christine never had a chance.

Could be. I was a ballet nerd -- didn't even live in the U.S. for most of the 80s -- so I had no idea he was known else where and then BOOM! Movie! That movie was also the beginning of my first girl-crush (on Isabella).

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It (probably) didn't help that Roddenberry (maybe) wasn't too keen on the thought of his majorly hot wife's character having an implied romance. =D I mean, I don't know for sure how particular the man was about that sort of thing, but...

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved loved that she was the voice of the computer in TNG and Louxana Troi, I thought SHE was the most interesting thing about Troi's character.

K I'm way off topic now, and I got a little geek on my screen.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah. I can get behind your nomination, as well. And apparently we are not alone (http://becksplusworld.wordpress.com/2009/06/13/mmmm-alan-alda/) in that.

You're in good company.

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I've wanted to reply "me too" to almost every comment in this thread.

He also did a poster for the American Library Association (http://www.ilovelibraries.org/news/topstories/readposters.cfm) in 1985. I, er...I had that poster, too. Hanging in my bedroom.

*cough*
