Crush

While browsing the archives of an LJ comm, I saw an icon of Michael Palin and thought "awwww..."

It made me wonder--how many teenage girls, in 1985, got hot and bothered when thinking about Galahad in Castle Anthrax? If we leave out the rabid cult of Duran Duran (which had its own problems with acceptability), my teenage libido struck on at least two strange choices.

Michael Palin

and

Steve Martin

How many other people, as nerdy teenagers, had crushes that would have been deemed freakish by their non-nerd peers? Fess up, you card-carrying members of the geek show. What unlikely candidates inhabited your early, awkward fantasies?

In my case, the Who's Pete Townsend. I think that's right where I got my nose thing.

D.

I'm pretty sure my nose crush started with Dick Van Dyke.

He wasn't a particularly geeky crush, but I think 1985 (or thereabouts) was when I discovered -- thanks to Rutger Hauer in Ladyhawke -- the effect the sound of leather armor had on my panties. Surprise!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! Yeah, that brings up a whole 'nother topic, doesn't it? =D

My first crush was on the already deceased Sabu.

Oh my god! I crushed on Gene Wilder, too! I didn't wanna take up too much space with the pictures in my post, so I only kept it to two. He would've been the third, though. HA!

Yeah, he's adorable.

Eeeeee!

Then and now...Jeff Goldblum.
Of course I also had a complete nerdy crush on Geddy Lee, of RUSH.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
How funny! I kinda had it for Mr. Goldblum, too. Tall, skinny, big nose. Yeah.

I remember staying up late and sneaking down to the basement to watch Into the Night (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089346/) on HBO after my parents went to bed.

I kinda liked Dan Aykroyd too, so that movie was a double win.

Um this icon does not lie. I was hot for Spock. I rooted for Nurse Chapel because her name was Christine.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I never recognized Uhura as a source of inspiration for my old haircut. But looking at that icon, she totally was.

I haven't talked with you about it yet, but can I guess that you liked the take on that relationship in the latest movie?

Oh oh oh. Jon Cryer--the Pretty In Pink Days. He's still kinda cute but the nerd factor in the 80s was part of the charm for me. Ducky...sigh

the chick in Journey of Natty Gann...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I swear that I am not putting you on here...I thought about that movie yesterday. Really. Seriously.

Granted, I was thinking about John Cusack, but yeah.

That possibly ranks as one of the most awkward/creepy screen kisses ever. Creepy because I knew the actress was my age--fourteen or fifteen--and Cusack was twenty. And looked it. Ew. Plus, dude. Totally unnecessary.

The actress in that movie grew up to be an incredibly beautiful woman. And went to Harvard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meredith_Salenger). Wow!

I agree with most of your commenters, especially about Jeff Goldblum. Nom, geeky. And Steve Martin, the younger years? Totally cute.

I submit Jason Patrick and Kiefer Sutherland ala The Lost Boys era,

and also,

Kristy McNichol. Yep, that's probably not an obvious one.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure that Kiefer Sutherland qualifies as a freaky crush. Donald Sutherland, maybe.

Image

I'm not harshing on your crushes of choice, mind you. I'm just more curious about people that, had you fessed up to thinking they were hot, would've caused looks of horror/disgust/confusion by mainstream peers.

It likely doesn't count as geeky, but I had a TOTAL crush on the lead singer of The Knack (http://www.knack.com/), based entirely on the album Get The Knack (http://www.knack.com/html/disc.html), when I was 11 in 1980.

Man, I still love that album! I'm slightly disturbed to consider that the lyric content of that album might have had quite an influence, there, in my hitting-puberty formative years!

And, of course, Evil Dead's Bruce Campbell (http://www.bruce-campbell.com/)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Other than My Sharona, I've never heard anything else from these gentlemen. I must investigate further. Thank you for the music suggestion!

Bruce Campbell not only qualifies as a freak crush, but gets you some serious street cred. I didn't know of the Evil Dead franchise until college.

Alan Alda
Pierre Trudeau
Stephen Hawking

Shit you not.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
If this was a competition, you would've won the "Eyebrows Just Touched My Hairline" prize with the Pierre Trudeau nomination.

Would you say Hawking was a cause or symptom of your fascination with machinery and prosthetics?

My aunt had his albums. Listening to Rambin' Man over and over again was the first time I remember laughing until my face hurt.

I gotta say I had the biggest crush on the late, great Wendy O Williams, the lead singer of the Plasmatics.

Image

And of course, Irish McCalla:

Hmm, now that I think of it there's some similarity there. But I kept ending up with blonds and redheads, go figure.

unlikely dude candidate: jeff goldblum. so sexxie i can hardly stand it! (plz note present tense).

the dudette candidates were not so unlikely, top of the crush list was lietenant uhura.

now i'll post this.
then i'll be embarrassed and never show my face here again.

:D

No need to be embarrassed! Thanks for chiming in. I was pleased to get so many fantastic responses to this post. I'm happy you stopped by.

[identity profile] amjhawk.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, as a strange reverse to this: a younger me had a huge crush on Mariah Carey - which I'm ashamed of now because it's non-nerdy and too poppy/mainstream.

[identity profile] shrijani.livejournal.com 2009-08-30 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Steve Martin, for sure. I mean, look at him! He's hot!

I had a thing for Tommy Smothers when I was eight. And the Captain (Daryl Dragon).
