After I read this post in bellydancing, I thought I'd see what was the current fashion in bedlah. After paging through a couple of screens, all I can say is dear god, my eyes! MY EYES! Holy crap, that's some ugly-ass shit. Really? I mean, really?

I never thought a costume could do the equivalent of a television show jumping the shark, but I underestimated the pure hatred that these designers have for women.

Jesus Christ on a cracker, I'm so glad I make my own dance costumes.

Bellydancestore, imho, has some of the ugliest out there - I mean, Dahlal's has some really awful ones every once in a while, but bellydancestore takes the cake. The only time I go there is if I'm trying to pricecheck Dahlal.

And the models with the bad wigs don't help matters. ;)

Those aren't bellydance outfits. Besides having the wrong cut of skirt and lacking old-world style (bellydancers dress in the ultimate retro style), they lack jingle jangles. Can't have a bellydancer without the jingle jangles.

Even as a base layer, they just look...wrong.

To be fair... it isn't the wrong cut of skirt for an Egyptian *style* dancer, ie straight skirt (they don't do floorwork and dance mainly knees together),.. but the designs... aiyayi! scary.

I found much nicer items on the site by just looking at their bra/belt sets. But even those.. scary heavy on fringe, even though I LOVE fringe. I just don't like it in "clumps."

Those costumes are ugly, but they're definitely bedlah. Just because you have an ideal for a costume doesn't mean that's the only type of costume out there. Styles change.

Just a few years ago, anerys's costumes might not have been considered bellydance costume. But I will personally kick the ass of anyone who says otherwise today.

Scrolled to the bottom of the pages too, probably shouldn't have :). I get the definite impression that there will not be that much dancing in these ensembles, or at least not ME type dancing, possible club dancing. And that they really will not be on someone all that long......

You'd be surprised at what people wear for bellydance in cabaret gigs. Some of Dina's (http://www.danseorientale.net/image/danse/Dina2.jpg) crazy get-ups (http://thumbnail028.mylivepage.com/chunk28/716245/446/small_DINA_007.jpg.jpg) are pretty horrifying. And she's a very successful dancer in Egypt. Mega-high dollar superstar status.
