I wash anything I buy before wearing it, jeans, shirts, the lot. I mean, someone who returned a pair of jeans may have worn them commando, right?

And who knows what's been handled and how? Plus there's that sizing and other fabric treatments, dust and such.

I'm suddenly really glad for my post-shopping habit of 'pull the tags off everything washable and put it straight into the washer' as well as my preference for hot-water-washable cotton panties.
