Mark today as a loss

I am at home today because I feel like ass from my eyeballs to my hips.

I need to get some food because our refrigerator is bare. I don't imagine I'll manage to muster the energy to do so. I suspect we'll have scrambled eggs for dinner.

After reading the PāNu post that [livejournal.com profile] adammaker linked today, I've decided I'm not waiting until August to give up artificial sweeteners. I'm giving them up today.

*pause for applause*

I think/hope that this will help with the doughnut cravings. Dear god please let it help with the doughnut cravings.

Last night, I was distressed to discover I've lost my perfect shift dress pattern. The one I made three times until I got a perfect muslin that was adjusted for all my figure idiosyncracies. It doesn't look like the pattern is still in print, either. Much sadness. I could make a pattern off the dress I still have, but I don't remember how to sew the armhole/neckline facing. I remember there was something weird about it, but I can't figure it out from looking at the garment itself. It's been too long. I might go to the fabric store (but not today!), see if there is a similarly constructed dress pattern, and buy it for just the instructions.

Why in the world would a pattern company discontinue a princess-seamed shift dress? Seems like it would be a nice basic wardrobe staple to keep in the lineup. I guess my idea of "wardrobe staple" differs from that of the Big Three. Hmph.

Yesterday I figured out how to keep the hoop up. I'm keeping it up more than 50% of the time now. Someone else needs to make the dirty joke on that, because I just don't have the energy.

*cheers for you* I can't stand artificial sweeteners. Aspartame tastes horrible forever and I don't trust any of the rest. Even the "harmless" ones.

I'm about to leave my house. If you would like anything, I can pick up some stuff for you while I'm out. You can give me a call.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-06-15 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the reason I'm fine with them (I actually kind of like them) is I grew up with my mom using saccharine in everything. Iced tea, kool-aid, sprinkled on cereal or cottage cheese, etc. I even ate the tablets when nobody was looking.

I really wish I was in that group of people who can't stand them. It would make this a lot easier.

Thank you for the cheers! They help. I told [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick this morning and he just sort of shrugged and went "OK." I glared at him and said "This is where you congratulate me and clap, dude. Come on."

*sigh*

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-06-15 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw. Lemme think about it. Right now the only things I can think of that I really want involve turning on the oven (mmmmm KALE CHIPS). But since [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick is home, that's off limits. I don't want to have to deal with hearing "Are you baking something? U R HEATIN' UP DA HOOOUUSSSEEE!"

*sigh* Can't sneak anything past that guy.

Giving up stuff is hard. Even if it is stuff you want to give up and especially if it is something you like or are used to having.

In my world, getting to have scrambled eggs for dinner is a TREAT. :)

Thank you!

If I wind up having eggy-weggs for dinner, I'll think of you and try to appreciate them. =)

Yanno, I might make fancy omelets for dinner here tonight. We've got some onion to use up. Hrm.

Ugh

[identity profile] wyckedgood.livejournal.com 2010-06-15 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I really hope you feel better.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-06-15 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. It's just girl stuff, so I'm sure I'll feel better tomorrow.

Good

I'm sorry my first thought was "When one's ass feels like ass, is that a good thing or a bad thing?"

Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you! I hope to feel much better tomorrow. Stupid hormones. =(

I'm not giving up artificial sweetener, which I indulge in a couple times a week. It doesn't give me carb cravings, so I don't see the harm. (Instruct me otherwise, if you like--I haven't read much about it.)

Also, I did my first full-fledged yoga class tonight, and I am quite sore. :)

[identity profile] annamatic.livejournal.com 2010-06-16 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'd be fucked if I had to give up artificial sweetener. I switched from regular soda to diet years ago, and have such a hardcore Diet Coke addiction that I get panicked just thinking about having to give it up. And coffee's awesome, but not an acceptable 1-for-1 analogue. Good luck to you!

I only have food in the house because my mom is visiting and she is a total mother hen who cooks for us like whoa.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-06-16 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] roya_spirit has read a lot more about possible dangers of artificial sweeteners. She can chime in if she wants. I would still use them if I didn't think they were sparking cravings.

I envy you!

Congratulations on the yoga. Yay!!!!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-06-16 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the well-wishes. I'm going to need them!

Lucky you, with your food and all. I managed to pull an "eh" casserole together last night, but it wasn't anything to (heh heh) write to mother about.

[identity profile] adammaker.livejournal.com 2010-06-16 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, if giving up something besides love and or oxygen gives you the panics, you might want to investigate more deeply.

[identity profile] adammaker.livejournal.com 2010-06-16 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
!!!Really big applause!!!

I think that artificial sweeteners can trigger insulin release and fat retention.
I think I make myself not like them.

I sorta miss my grandmother's iced tea with lemon and pink saccharin. ODD.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-06-16 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the applause. =D

Yeah, my mom made iced tea with The Pink Stuff, too. Mmmm.

Hey, now, to be fair you said if offhand, and I didn't realize this was Another Big Step!

PS:

*clapping*

Rock on with your disciplined self.

Have you read or do you know about "Change Your Brain ~ Change Your Body?" I saw Dr. Amen for the first time on KCPT during a fundraiser and I found him very interesting. I am starting to research him and I like what I'm reading though I've not fully applied it yet. I plan to as he speaks of how to avoid disease as well.

These youtube videos below only touch on a couple of his philosophies. These are about cravings (the beginning of #1 made me say "duh," but I promise it gets better). If you want to know more I'd suggest looking him up as I am doing.

There is even a "Change Your Brain ~ Change Your Body" cookbook

I'm sure his methods work for a lot of people, but most of this stuff he's espousing is simply wrong for me. Especially the eat small meals frequently.

IMO, if you need to eat frequently to keep your blood sugars up, something is wrong with your blood sugar.
