Next Level

You guys, you guys! I found it! I found the gym of my dreams and it exists here in Lawrence! Holy shit, you guys! It's right here!

Last week, I wrote this entry, but never posted it publicly:

I would love to have a group like this in Lawrence.

When the movie 300 came out, and the accompanying articles on how the actors got in shape for their roles, I was smitten by the techniques and philosophy of GymJones. Bodytribe seems to support similar attitudes towards movement and practical fitness. Why are groups/gyms like this so difficult to find? Seems to me, it would be a terrific way to build your gym. Spare tires, sand-filled hoses, broken down cars to push (ha!). The DIY options are endless and appealing.

Do people really prefer the commonly accepted notion of a gym, with mirrors, weights, Nautilus machines, etc.? Or is it just that they don't know any better?

Now, fast-forward to this week: When I asked the girl who did my body fat testing if she had recommendations for a local trainer that didn't work in affiliation with the local gyms (I am not joining a gym), she gave me the contact info for a Chris Dellasega. I sent him this email:

...are you willing to work with someone who is stubborn about her eating habits? I eat mostly paleo, the exceptions being wine a couple times a week, and cream in my coffee. I occasionally do intermittent fasting. I hope this doesn't sound bitchy, but I have G.I. problems (under control, finally) and I'm afraid I don't work well with people who tell me I need to eat grains and/or several small meals a day.

I would like to split my fitness focus between strength-building for bone health and general fat loss. I would like to use circuit-training and alternatives to cardio-for-cardio's sake. I know myself, and I know I would rather lay down and die than jog around the block even once. Don't even talk to me about cardio machines. Kettleballs look fun (and good for fat loss). I wouldn't mind investing in some if you can show me how to use them properly. I'm not afraid of lifting heavy things, although without a gym membership, I realize my options for that are limited (hence my TRX). I would love some advice in regards to form on the TRX, too, if you have any experience with using those. I dream of being able to do an unassisted chin-up one day. Does that help give you an idea of what I'm looking for? It's a mixed bag, but I get bored doing the same thing every day.

He responded back very positively, and I set up a coffee date with him to chat about my fitness goals and preferences (he drinks coffee--already a sign in his favor). That was last night.

Today, I am on cloud nine! This guy is a perfect trainer for me. He's smart, open-minded, interested in sharing information, stresses body awareness and interconnectedness, loves compound movements and whole-body fitness, hates most guys' focus on bench-pressing and big biceps for the sake of big biceps, etc. I got the impression that he left his previous employment at a local gym because he couldn't stand watching people use the weight and cardio machines any longer.

He also hates smack talk and boasting about any one particular style of training. "We don't claim to know everything about everything. We're always interested in learning and experimenting with new techniques. That's why we're the best." ::love::

When he asked "Have you heard the term 'functional strength'?" I about wept for joy. He's excited to work with a woman who looks forward to being strong. I'm excited to work with someone who has a fitness philosophy similar to mine. And he says he can totally get me doing unassisted chin-ups.

\m/ >_< \m/

I'll be meeting with him at the Next Level facility every other Tuesday through mid-December. This is the final nail in the financial coffin of the yoga training, but I'm okay with that. It's a good trade. A very good trade. Considering where I am now, and where I hope to be a year from now, this is the better option.

Yay yay yay! I'm thrilled!

Doesn't it just?

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2010-07-08 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know about these people either! How much is training? (And you can e-mail me that answer)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-08 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Email is on the way!

RTFO!

Hell, even as an ACSM-certified one myself, *I* like your trainer. That gym looks like a lot of fun, and not dissimilar to my own.
In fact, just last night I was at the gym (with Terri, no less) flipping tires, smashing them with sledgehammers, doing sled sprints, and pushing cars. Good times!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-08 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
R some serious TFO!

Next Level has the sledgehammer/tire option, too. Oh, and a prowler sled.

Awesome for you. Let us know how it works out.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-08 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Rest assured, I'll be posting about the successes as well as the aches and growing pains. =D

[identity profile] fairgoldberry.livejournal.com 2010-07-08 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That's really awesome! I'm gla you found someone who respects your fitness boundaries and can push you without pushing his agenda!

Much love,
Rowan

push you without pushing his agenda

Yes, exactly! What a perfect phrase. Thank you!

[identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com 2010-07-08 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome! I can't afford a personal trainer, but I think I've been making some pretty good progress on my own. In the past month and a half, I've put on four or five pounds of muscle.

The BodyTribe folks look like they have a blast. I'd love to train with a group of people like that. But I am making good progress between freeweights, plyometrics, and my pole dance class.

BTW, I could never do chin-ups until I studied pole dance. It's fantastic for developing that kind of strength.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-08 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
And congratulations, to you, lady! You are looking fantastic!

Two days ago, I would've said that I'd prefer the opportunity to take pole-dancing classes over a personal trainer, but now that I've met this guy, I'm all a-flutter over working with him.

[identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com 2010-07-08 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! :D

This seems great! I am a bit jealous, having others to help motivate you can be the difference between failing forward and not failing.

having others to help motivate you can be the difference

I know that's why I didn't keep on keeping on with that fab system you gave me two years ago. I am so much more honest with myself when I'm held accountable to someone else. Very strange, but there you go.

Liking him as a person makes a huge difference, too. I don't want to feel like a disappoint to him during our sessions.

[identity profile] annamatic.livejournal.com 2010-07-08 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG, Lydia, I am so stoked for you. That seems like such a serendipitous matchup!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-09 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm all wiggly about it! LOL!

[identity profile] miischelle.livejournal.com 2010-07-09 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
OMG he sounds INCREDIBLE!!!!!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-09 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
He really is. Can't wait to report back about the first session.

[identity profile] belluthien.livejournal.com 2010-07-09 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! GO YOU!!!

Indeed! In [livejournal.com profile] miischelle's words: Go, team ME!

[identity profile] marinshellstone.livejournal.com 2010-07-09 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Wow...this sounds pretty amazing!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-09 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, doesn't it? Not quite as romantic as your fitness hook-up, but I'm pretty excited about it. =D

[identity profile] apocalypticbob.livejournal.com 2010-07-09 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
Having an exercise you enjoy makes all the difference in the world! I've been miserable with everything I've tried until I stumbled on to Zumba, and the reason I love it is it doesn't feel like exercise to me! It feels like taking a dance class, and that keeps me going back. We learn new routines every week, and the focus is on moving, and they encourage you to make the moves your own, so there is some art in it. The minute it starts feeling like a same old boring aerobics class will be when I'm done with it.

I so hope that this new trainer works for you. I know that feeling of "clicking" with an exercise, and I'm happy you've found it!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-09 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm happy, too! Yay! And yay for finding your Zumba niche!

Awesome

Yes yes yes!

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2010-07-09 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
That is PERFECT! Congratulations.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-10 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! And watch out. You're going to have some chin-up competition soon.

[identity profile] adammaker.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
This sounds so perfect!

Go kick *tons* of ass!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-07-12 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I shall!
