It's time to get dressed

I think everyone knows how I feel about people wearing flip-flops every day, every where, to every thing. I was pleased to find the image below on this post about getting dressed, via Melicious's blog The Clothes Make the Girl.

That was a fun read, and yes, I felt so faboo dressed up to travel to my vacation.
Who wants to arrive at a swank resort looking like one just got out of bed?

[identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't own flipflops or pyjama pants. I'm planning on dressing like a total whore to go to a shadowcast of Repo The Genetic Opera tomorrow night. Woohoo!

[identity profile] normalcyispasse.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
While I definitely enjoy looking presentable for some events, I'd much rather my clothes be functional than fabulous!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome! I'm so glad you're finally getting to go see it!

Flip-flops: Never functional. I saw a guy riding a motorcycle yesterday, wearing flip-flops. I'd been waffling about putting up this post until I saw him.

It's possible to dress functionally without dressing sloppily. Also, when you're at the gym or climbing a mountain, different rules apply. But those rules still don't include flip-flops unless your workout is on the beach or at the pool.

[identity profile] normalcyispasse.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Motorcycle gear is a whole other beast. Flip-flops and jeans/shorts won't do a damn thing for you if you go down.

Generally speaking, though, when I'm at work I have to be on my feet and relatively active. I don't own any "nice" jeans, but if I did they would be poor candidates.

I'm also big on comfort. If something's not comfortable, I'm probably not going to wear it.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I still maintain that one can be comfortable without being sloppy.

[identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too!

Oh, I don't own sweatpants, either.

[identity profile] cmt2779.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's further support for your anti-flip-flop position (http://www.newsweek.com/2008/06/09/flip-flop-flaws.html). It's not just an aesthetic issue, apparently.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_luaineach/ 2010-08-12 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll maintain that you can not look sloppy while at the same time not expending effort to "look fabulous".

Where this loses me is "saturday night effort into sunday afternoon" - in highschool I curled my hair and put on eyeliner before even running to the grocery. I think I'm the better person now that I don't.

Jet wears Mossimo flip flops pretty much everywhere if we are just running somewhere. Who wants to put on socks or shoes with any bigger straps when it's +100 out? I personally don't wear them because I think they are uncomfortable but I have an equivalent pair of slip on shoes.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_luaineach/ 2010-08-12 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Flip-flops: Never functional.

disagree.

And the thing you posted has nothing to do with function. It has to do with looking good for appearances sake only. If it was about function, sweat pants (or the yoga pant equivalent) would be the perfect airport outfit.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. I've known about the health issues for a while, too. Sadly, most people (kids) these days couldn't care less about future health problems.

I like your style, you fashion-lady, you.

[identity profile] femfataleatron.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Flip flops ruin your back.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)

Well, yes....and? =D

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
saturday night effort into sunday afternoon

Yes, that was the one line I didn't care for. I just liked the rest of it too much not to use the whole thing!

I agree that accommodations must be made for climate. Sometimes it is Just Too Damn Hot.

But I really do think that flip-flops, worn for more than just out for a quick errand a couple times a week, are really bad. Bad for your feet, even if you don't care about fashion.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_luaineach/ 2010-08-12 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Same could be said for chicks who wear heels every day, except that seems okay to you because ... it looks nicer?

If this was the issue, then athletic shoes *would* be the shoe of choice for the office, no?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_luaineach/ 2010-08-12 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, nothing! :)

But then don't throw in the never functional argument. Just say:

Flip-flops: Don't Want To See Your Toes, Thanks.

and be done with it. ;)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_luaineach/ 2010-08-12 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
But, see, I don't mind flip flops (or the equivalent) for things like out to eat or whatever (that you might not consider 'quick errand') because you are not *on* your feet so the "bad for you" issue is irrelevant and I don't mind the aesthetic. I disapprove of them where open toes are a safety hazard (and that would include the airport!) but otherwise I don't equate them with "lazy" in the bad sense, if you know what I mean. But, I also live in a laid back old west desert city so the fashion 'norm' here would no doubt appall you. :)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
People who wear heels every day are insane.

I think you're overestimating what I think of as "getting dressed." Clean jeans or shorts and a tee shirt? Fine. Flippy skirt and comfy shoes? Fine.

This (http://www.codeodor.com/images/britney_spears_in_sweatpants.jpg) is the sort of thing I'm tired of seeing at the grocery store.

Yes, every once in a while I stop to pick up milk on my way home from yoga while I'm wearing my yoga pants and tee shirt. I assure you, the other 50 people dressed like me did not just come from the gym.

Also: Kids coming to class in their pajamas, with their hair un-brushed? Way too common on this campus.

I'll be sure to pack some sedatives when I make the trek to visit you.

Deion Sanders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deion_Sanders) espouses this same philosophy, with his line of "you look good, you feel good. you feel good, you play good. you play good, they pay good." It always makes me laugh. And I don't dispute the idea in general, just that I can feel I look good (and then the rest follows) in yoga pants and a tank top.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't even own a pair, although I should purchase some just so I have something to wear home from getting a pedicure.

Not that I'm gonna be able to afford a pedicure anytime soon.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm betting when you wear your yoga pants and tank top, you don't look schlubby...er. Unless you're wearing those pants and you know the ones I mean.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_luaineach/ 2010-08-12 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, well, yes. I would assume my natural grace and beauty would keep me from looking schlubby no matter what! :) I'm pretty sure I even pulled those pants off with an airy and chic sort of panache!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Emphasis on airy.

[identity profile] miischelle.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I so very much wish I had the energy for this kind of thing, because the confidence level between "homeless" days and "Fabulous" days is palpable.
Unfortunately.....

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
See, right?!?!?

I think when you get your digestive/food issues under control, it's likely that you'll notice an increase in energy levels. And maybe consider cutting back your activities just a leetle bit? Maybe? Seems like you're always running and you only rest when your body crashes.

[identity profile] miischelle.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know....the other bit of the problem is the "I have to be at work at 6am and the fact that I even managed to get dressed after getting up at 4:30 is a miracle."

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
There's that. Your work schedule would suck balls.

Sandles. Sandles with lovely wonderful arch-support and three adjustible bands.

The far-more-energetic-15-years-younger me sometimes cringes at things I have worn to run errands. I finally decided that, at least while the weather is warm, my answer is plain t-shirt + fabulous skirt + sandals/flats = GO for pretty much anything. Bonus - it's just as fast as running out looking sloppy.

Flip-flops are for the pool and to throw on my bare feet if I have to go into the garage. Also for pedicures. :) I tried wearing a "nice" pair to work ONCE, and my feet died! Plus, I didn't like looking as if I wanted to blend in with college kids half my age. Never again.

Of course, dressing "up" can be taken to the opposite extreme. Girls walking hobbling to class across our campus in camp shirts, dress shorts and 3" patent pumps make me want to take them aside for counseling on habits for a healthy back.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes to everything here.

[identity profile] chronovore.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I like this idea. It doesn't have to be just for women. In Japan, people follow this credo daily; makes me wonder what I can do to keep up.

Of course, if '30s and '40s suits were a little easier to come buy, I'd retro myself into a bit of style now and then.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yum. I love those old suits. Keep an eye out! Suit styles (lapel widths, jacket lengths, etc.) change a lot. You might find something similar in a modern store--with modern sizing!

But, no rubber flip-flops!

Get some really cute ones cheap from Kohl's like

Yes, no rubber ones.

I have a $10 gift card for Kohl's...

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)

Me too!

.. and most of the sale ones go for around $4-8

I'm going to go try on a pair of these Levis (http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/womens/brandswomen/levi/PRD~539265/Levis+525+Perfect+Waist+StraightLeg+Jeans.jsp), the midrise waist looks promising. Let's hope the ass agrees.

I live by this, pretty much...I guarantee you've never seen me in sweatpants (as I don't own any), and I only wear my gym/yoga pants to, well, gym/yoga.

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
A-fucking-men!

I hate to wear my pajama pants to take the frikkin' trash out to the dumpster here at the apartment complex! I've done it once or twice but have been very glad I never ran into anyone.

It's about self-respect, far as I'm concerned.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Per-zactly!
