Bitchy Ms. Red is bitchy

I saw on someone's blog that she attended San Francisco's Edwardian Ball. I got all excited to see some eye candy. Well. Perhaps I'm a little biased for several reasons (I love actual Edwardian fashion, I am sick to tears of faux Victoriana, I am currently bleeding like a stuck pig), but I have to ask: Why the fuck do they call this thing The Edwardian Ball?

It's a glorious spectacle and everyone looks great, I guess. But here's an opportunity to show off some gorgeous and generally under-appreciated fashions (Poiret! Fortuny!), yet everyone's trotting around in the same old hourglass-corsetted and top-hatted sillhouettes. Pah.

Nothing in that video looked even remotely Edwardian.
*sigh*
Looked more steampunk goth, imo.

I know, right? Let's call a spade a spade, people.

That fantasy carnival chic is fun and all, but why turn down a chance to dress like someone who drowned on the Titanic? Talk about gothy opportunity!

I know! I would LOVE to do something like that. It is on my long undone list somewhere, lol.

Of course, if I had gone to this party, I would have brought Vlad. ;-)

Even more confounding... it apparently has nothing to do with the Edwardian era (http://edwardianball.com/about), but it rather a celebration of the works of

Edward Gorey
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Gorey).

ah-RUH?

I love me some Edward Gorey, but that is the stupidest pun ever and a horrible descriptor. They could've called it fabulous like the Gashlycrumb Ball or something like that. Sheesh.

Edit: From the little "About" article you linked, comes this bit of conversation:

“I say,” ventured the first gent, “wouldn’t it be smashing to throw a ball in honor of the ghastly tales of Sir Edward Gorey?”

“Oh yes indeed!” agreed the lady emphatically. “We could all dress…Edwardian!”

So yeah. FAIL.

Those were my thoughts as well.
... I'm thinking that's a Burning Man reference as far as where it started. That explains it all, doesn't it?

OTOH, I've just spent a lovely half hour in pursuit of lovely Charles Addams and Gorey websites, funny how they were my faves back in oh... um... eek.. the mid 70s!

I didn't bother to read the whole thing. Too frustrating. Was the first inspiration Edward Gorey or Edwardian? Either way, linking these = FAIL.
*sigh*

inorite?

I mean if Edward Gorey was the first inspiration as they claim, and Edwardian just refers to "of Edward Gorey", then still, WTF with all the Victorian wear?

GAHHHH!

Gary Oldman in that flick... :swoon:
