So very clever

Muscle pain is one of the side effects of the ...oh dear. The metronidozole? I don't remember now. But yes, a possible effect. Doesn't explain the joint pain, though. Moving on!

My mother sent me this: What Your Favorite Kid's Book Then Says About You Now. I have to admit, it was scarily accurate for me:

The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. No matter what, you’re always the only one at the office at 9am on the dot. Then you annoy everyone all day with all your clever puns.

Well!

I forgot to mention that during the "I want you to sing this at my funeral" conversation, I narrowly skated around having to bring up the topic of My Atheism. But unlike my mother, my father knows better than to ask questions to which he really doesn't want the answer. It must be difficult to be the parent of a child that you think is going to hell.

One thing I'm learning while on this highly structured drug regimen is that I snack a lot more than I thought I did. I can only eat during specified times, since I'm supposed to take the tetracycline four times a day on an empty stomach. That leaves some very narrow windows of eating opportunity. Probably twice a day I find myself thinking "How about a little something" and then I realize I can't. Snacking is evil and sneaky. I suspect I shall lose a couple pounds in the next two weeks. And with a little bit of effort, I shan't pick that habit back up.

The Crave is a Lie.

Too bad nobody had even put Ender's Game in my hands when I was a child, then it would have been perfect.

Mine is You may or may not be that lady who talks to her plants.

Meh.

[identity profile] miischelle.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
that was me too.....

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that one's pretty boring. I think it's obvious which books the article author didn't like so much.

I read Ender's Game when it came out in 1985 and was pretty blown away by it. But I can't really say it was a kid's book for me since I read it when I was 15. It's still really weird for me to think that it's being marketed as YA now.

[identity profile] miischelle.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
My other favorite was The Giving Tree.....also....not so awesome.

Never read Ender's Game....should I put it on my list?

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the most popular SF novel for non-SF readers - and all the Kids Today have read it. I read it as a grown-up and still loved it.

WTF about that list, though? None of the books that had a big impact on me are there. A Wrinkle in Time, Rocketship Galileo, The Hobbit, Watership Down...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Ender's Game is a very good book. Despite Orson Scott Card being an absolute douche-hat. Check it out from the library if you can, so he doesn't get royalties. =D

"You’re a compulsive traveller and manage to make friends no matter where you go. Sometimes that leads to getting locked in prison or drugged, but you can roll with the punches."

The author may be surprised to find that I've never been locked in prison.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Not even the prison of your mind?!?!?!

The book I used to drag around wasn't on that list: The Mad Scientist's Club.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I so wish I'd known about that when I was a kid! Read it as an adult and LOVED it.

Why do you need to take tetracycline, a weak (though effective) antibiotic THAT often? Sorry, been a bit out of the loop. It kills the type of bacteria that aggrivates acne and is used sometimes on mild surgical procedures. Main advantage is cheapness and effectiveness if one hasn't already had a shitload of Tetra in their day.

Antibiotics kill healthy bacteria in the gut, something you already struggle with. Bear that in mind too regarding diet.

One piece of advice: if you don't already know, DO NOT take that shit before bed -- you need a 1/2 an hour window. I wasn't warned and ended up with a confusing burning sensation in my esophogus for days (like the pill never went down).

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The antibiotics are to (we hope) kill off the H. Pylori that has unpacked his bags and taken up residence in my gut. I'm taking a probiotic to counteract some of the damage, and will continue to do so after I cease taking the antibiotics.

All this because I'm allergic to penicillin.

I was a cross between

"Every house you live in must be outfitted with a walk in closet. Just in case."

and

"Your friends may be totally crazy, but you’re together enough that you can go out partying with them every night and still hold down a full-time job."

Both of which are actually relatively accurate...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll definitely take that walk-in closet. But perhaps for different reasons than the article author suggests. =D

Levofloxacin can cause severe muscle and joint pain, are you taking something in that family of drug? (http://www.drugs.com/levaquin.html)

I don't like that book thing.. most of them are way after my time as a child, (wahh) and I wasn't really one for the classics, but I guess I mostly resemble liking Alice in Wonderland *cringe* all those teas and potions, yep.
I remember some favorites being Charles Addams books. heh.
and Call of the Wild. go figure.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
are you taking something in that family of drug?

Nope, I'm taking metronidazole, tetracycline, and omeprozole. The omeprozole is for the heartburn possible from the metronidazole and tetracycline. =(

No shame in loving Alice in Wonderland! It's probably the closest of that list to Phantom Tollbooth, actually. Which, may I say, is a fancy-baby book.

Just read this and thought you might be interested: http://thyroid.about.com/od/drsrichkarileeshames/a/fluoride2006.htm

Apparently, I'm either a super genius or a politician, but not both. Hmm....

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never been particularly pro-flouride, anyway. I'm not certain I want to rely on "well-chosen bottled water" for all my cooking and drinking, though. Sheesh. I wonder if there's any way to filter that shit...

[identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not very pro-fluoride, either. And I'm definitely not pro bottled water. Gah. Brita filters don't get fluoride out, either. I think it requires an expensive filtration system to get rid of it. Ugh ugh ugh.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That's some major suck. Maybe I should research which ones do filter for flouride. Our local water is pretty gross, so I filter for taste and smell more than anything else. I'd pay some money to get one of those that go in your kitchen sink so I don't have to fuck around with a stupid Brita anymore.

Damn! They didn't have Mrs. Frisbee and the Rats of NIMH. I would also page through my Sky Observer's Guide endlessly. I guess those selections speak for themselves.

No Dr. Seuss or The Monster at the End of This Book. I guess they weren't considering books that Mom would have read to us.

I didn't realize you were a stargazer! You should come over sometime when [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick brings the telescope out on a nice weekend night...

"The crave is a lie" is just brilliant. I think I'll write it all over the walls of my office.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I was pretty pleased with it. Use it abundantly!

I loved the link to the children's books.
