A red boot day

I feel better today! I'm disappointed that I didn't go to the Zumba class last night, but the headache is almost gone. In fact, it's down to about the sort of "normal" sinus pressure that I usually have. I felt so good that I wore my red boots today. Fancy baby!

Tonight is "Discovering Pluto," Michael Byers's talk at KU. Details are on [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick's LJ post, here.

I might invest some time this summer in going to the pick-your-own farms. I would think the prices are a little lower than the same at the Farmer's Market, yes? Maybe? I know the options for what you can pick are limited, but it would be nice to get at least a big box of strawberries for dehydrating, and maybe some spinach and asparagus. Does anyone have info on what I can expect for prices? I like how they handily don't list that on their websites.

Speaking of food (but when am I not?) my new favorite breakfast (that I can take to work): the Spaghetti Squash Casserole, with a handful of raisins and sliced almonds mixed on top, and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Sometimes a little drizzle of coconut milk, if it's too dry. Mmmm.

I miss you Pluto!

You're welcome! Too bad you can't make it to the event. =(

We only have one pick-your-own farm locally (it's for blueberries), and their prices aren't terrible--they're about right on for the grocery store or farmer's market (maybe a little less than off-season prices, a bit more than sale prices), but the quality of berries is totally worth it--besides, they let you sample pretty freely, so if there's more than one variety, you can pick the ones you like best and not waste your time or money on ones you don't like as much.

Nice! I'm happy to pay a little over grocery store prices for organically grown stuff (especially considering what they put on strawberries and blueberries, and how much).

I'm hoping to get [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick's money's worth out of the dehydrator this summer. Dried blueberries would be really nice.

We're planning to stop at as many pick-your-own places as we can conveniently find on our route all along the country. I think stopping and picking pounds of blueberries and then eating those for the next six hours in the car is something Jet will remember forEVer! Not to mention coming to people's houses with food in hand (52 ears of corn anyone?) adds to the fun. :) A price I know off the top of my head because I just looked at it last night is 3.20/lb for organic blueberries at a u-pick outside of orlando, florida. How that relates to prices in your area, I have no idea but that's what I got!

That does sound fun! Good times! I'll certainly be cooking for you guys while you're here, so be sure to pipe up with food allergies or restrictions (although I can't imagine anyone could be more food restricted than myself.

Thank goodness you're not vegetarians.

Hooray for feeling better!

It's great! I have a bit of an appetite, even. Woo!

http://www.pickyourown.org/ I use this site for a ton of knowledge regarding pick your own stuff.

Price wise pretty much the same as farmers markets. One thing to remember is that if they aren't listed as organic, find out if they follow organic practices. Often smaller farms don't have the cash to pony up for the certification or simply no time to jump through the all the red tape that surrounds the issue.

Hmm, I don't know about dehydrating food... but I know with canning I often ask for seconds (like tomatoes) and they are the ugly fruit that won't sell at market and thus I pay much less for it.

I was thinking of having food work days over the season... still playing with it in my head.

That's the site I was looking at! Glad to hear it has a good recommendation. And good idea about the ugly fruit. Thank you!

I'd be curious to go to the between event at Pedleton's tomorrow, (http://www.pendletons.com/) if only for finding out about the goat cheese and future berries!

Lemme know what you find out!

Then again, I may just venture near, only to be turned away by the hordes of rugrats and ankle-biters out there for an early Easter egg hunt. *shudder*
