Moxibustion
Yesterday was a new and exciting experience with Kiva, my wonderful acupuncturist. After I related to her my recent trials with the antibiotics and inflammation (she was impressed by the before/after photo, too), she decided on an alternative to needles for last night's treatment.
Moxa!
Apparently, moxa is especially effective when dealing with chronic deficiencies--certainly a big problem for me. Not enough digestive chemicals, not enough thyroid hormone, not enough energy, blah blah blah. I was a little nervous when she put burning tubes of incense on my stomach, but then I realized that there was a small sticky patch on the bottom of the cone that kept it from falling over. *whew* The heat left little pink marks which are still visible this morning, but that's no biggie since I don't have any dance gigs coming up. An additional benefit was that the burning cone of mugwort smelled just like dope and brought back some pleasant memories. Mmmmm. I could feel some movement in my guts during the treatment, which was pretty cool.
Now that we have a new diagnosis and focus (the Hashimoto's and immune/inflammation issues), I'm going back to weekly treatments. Kiva says there are some standard protocols for dealing with these problems, and it will be nice to have treatments closer together.
Now that I'm off that nasty depressive jag from the antibiotics, I'm a little more hopeful about dealing with this--even without Dr. Pickel's guidance.
Here's a photo of what the moxa sticks looked like that Kiva used.
