Sean Maher (the actor who played Simon Tam in Firefly) just came out.

Kylie Lee's excellent stories about Simon and Jayne were my introduction to slash fiction.* If you're into that sort of thing, check them out.

I know it's questionable (if not plain offensive) that my first reaction to this news was "Wow. Hot." Oh, well. I'm not fooling anybody who's been reading this LJ for any amount of time.

Ha ha ha ha! Poor Kaylee indeed. For many reasons. I mean, why Simon at all when she had this (http://www.fireflywiki.org/img/Jayne23.jpg) running around on a spaceship with her. I mean, just...I....ngnngngngn. Oh, that's right. Silly girl was probably interested in more than just sex.

The issue of gaydar is a very interesting one, and something I might bring up in a different post sometime.

I think it's pointless to make guesses about someone's sexual orientation when you've never even met them. Well, it's a ridiculous thing to do when you have met them, but...

Anyway, Mr. Maher is an actor, so what we mostly see of him is him playing a role. And if he's good enough to get a major role on a nationally broadcast television show, he's probably not letting too much of himself come out in that role. So it's not odd that casual audiences were surprised by this.
