Apologies, my brain is a little fried

Things are a little less crazy today. Thank god. I still have a large(ish) task to finish this afternoon, but I'm waiting on someone else to program part of the software I use that will make the task easier. So it might take the same amount of time (doing it now vs. waiting for her to make changes and doing it later), but it'll be less tedious and, therefore, I'll be less prone to mistakes. I hope. So. Waiting.

[livejournal.com profile] mckittericksent me this story about what the authors purport was the first ever SF convention. I vote people dress like this more at conventions. Seriously. Also? I want to party with young Mr. Walter Gillings. For real. He's the one on the far left. I mean, just look at him.

My acupuncture schedule is all fucked up right now due to my mis-remembering that I'd made appointments through February. I still swear I did, but maybe something happened with her online scheduler. Anyway, my appointments are sprinkled around different days all weird and I don't get back to my Thursday schedule until February. This means I did not get to go home and drink after work last night which let me tell you was sorely, sorely needed. I was so wiped out when I got home from the appointment, I couldn't muster the enthusiasm for wine, even, and just sat on the couch for a movie until (past) bedtime.

Tonight: Wine for sure (after punching things). And [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick is (probably) going out with his friends this evening, so it's solitary drinking time which, I have to be honest, is one of the great joys of being an adult, IMO.

I might be drumming at an actual thing later this month in KC. Depends on if the rest of Hippie Drum Circle is interested. But, yeah. Me. Drumming. In public. Craziness abounds. I'll be taking my zills just in case, oh hell yes. I'm particularly excited at the opportunity to use my new giant ones that I bought from [livejournal.com profile] tama_grey except oh shit honey! I just realized I forgot to send you money. I'll do that this weekend.

Jeez.

I vote people dress more like that everywhere. I mean, I do appreciate the freedom of today's society that I can go out wearing sweats and it's totally fine. But there's also a part of me that wishes we were still in a time when people dresses for everything. It would make it easier to convince my fiancee to dress up when we go out to dinner. Plus, when I've made the effort, and the people next to me are wearing torn jeans and a tank top, it kind of ruins the effort.

I'm a little (lot) more fascist than you are about this. I don't appreciate the lax fashion standards of our current society. In fact, I would venture the opinion that our disregard for outer appearance has contributed in no small part to the decline in our basic civility to one another. I laugh at hipsters with their crazy ugly sweaters and nasty skinny jeans, but at least they're making a fashion choice. I'll take that over flip-flops and pajama bottoms, thank you.

Unless I'm going straight to the gym or acupuncture or yoga or something of that nature, I *never* leave the house in sweatpants or such. And unless it's an emergency situation (like I won't have a car later), I absolutely will not run an extra errand on my way to or from said sweatpant-clad activity. I come home to change first.

[livejournal.com profile] mckitterick would probably argue that my camo cut-offs and combat boot ensemble that I wear for a large percentage of wintertime Saturdays hardly counts as being "dressed," but that's only because he kinda hates those shorts. I love them, though. 1. They belonged to a friend who wore them in Sarajevo, and 2. They're Punk Rock, Bitches.

I have a lot of feelings about fashion.

Well, honestly, I don't go out in sweats either. Unless I'm sick and running to the drugstore or something. But I do appreciate the face that I -can- if necessary. I watch shows like Mad Men, and see how done-up the women are just going grocery shopping, and I'm glad that I can don jeans, a cute shirt, and throw my hair into a bun and just go run my errands, without spending time primping and fussing.

I certainly don't want to go back to wearing stockings everywhere, and being thought of as cheap or loose if I forgo a girdle. But I also wish that society had a better appreciation of the concept of, well...shame so that we didn't wind up with whole websites dedicated to things like People of Walmart (http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/).

I'm not in favor of a literal Fashion Police. I just want a happy medium. With, you know, a little balance tip on my side.

I'm going to second (or whatever number) the statement about people dressing more like that all the time. I'll admit that I've not yet gotten all the way to suits and ties in my day-to-day life, but I sort of aspire toward something that's at least in that vague direction. I need to learn how to wear vests and suspenders, I think.

You would look fantastic in vest and suspenders. You already dress very well, I think.

Thanks!
