XMFC Finally

I finally got around to watching X-Men: First Class on Tuesday night. The serger was still in the shop, and movie-watching is one of [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick's Top Favorite Things Evar, so there you go. It was...okay. The movie itself was okay. Everything about the movie was great. I think I probably should have seen it in the theater, with a lot of other people who were really into it. As it was, my experience of the film for the film itself was (unfortunately) colored by reactions like this:

"They call those 60s fashions? I saw better representations of this era in Austin Powers*."

"Oh of course the black guy dies. I mean, really, scriptwriters? Really? Come on. You might as well have mixed your metaphors and put him in a red shirt instead of that blue one."

"How Really Incredibly Interesting that the Latino actor with the heavy accent has no speaking lines**."

It didn't help that the DVD was damaged, and it froze up during the "Walk the line between rage and serenity and you can move a giant fucking satellite dish thing" scene. Also, what line exists between rage and serenity, please someone tell me, because I think that would be a helpful thing to incorporate into my life, even without any mutant powers. Man, that concept just sucks. Does it come out of the comics? Because that's the only excuse I can imagine for using it.

So this isn't a total downer post, though, here are the things I enjoyed (and I did enjoy it--god knows it was miles better than Thor):

The casting was superb. Even January Jones, whom I'm pretty sure is the most vapid, frigid actress I've ever seen, was thus perfect for this interpretation of Emma Frost. I could look at Michael Fassbender all day, so no complaints there. In my teens, I totally would've crushed on Nicholas Hoult, who played Hank (Beast). OMG he was perfect and adorable. Anyway, yeah. Good job, casting department.

I loved how they built the relationship between Erik and Raven. Loved it. There was depth there that I didn't expect. My first reaction to Raven's treatment of Hank was that she was being a manipulative cocktease. But after thinking about it, I realize that wasn't her motivation at all. She was trying to find someone else (someone more appropriate than Erik) who valued her sexually as a non-human-looking mutant. When she realized this was doomed to failure, only then did she finally succumb to reality and pick her side. I think Jennifer Lawrence was just too young to make this struggle come off as anything other than flirtation. The Erik/Raven echoing Shaw and Frost's relationship was great. I love how the Erik/Raven relationship is complex and fraught, while the Shaw/Frost one appears much more shallow--just as the respective characters themselves are three-dimensional vs. two-dimensional. Just like comic books versus a movie! The meta here was fucking made of awesome.

It's too bad I'm coming late to the game on this one, because I'm sure the conversations about this movie (meta! my favorite!) would've been fantastic.

[livejournal.com profile] mckitterick asked me what mutant power I'd like and I came up with some weird convoluted thing about DNA, but upon reflection what it really comes down to is Regeneration. I want to be able to regenerate my damaged body cells. Seems like this is a fairly common trait in the Marvel universe, so it's not like I'm asking for the moon, here. Just imagine how handy that would come in for daily life, even. I'd never have to wear sunscreen again! And kiss that autoimmune disease (or at least the symptoms) goodbye!

* For most of the women's fashions. The men's fashions were fine.
** At least none that I remember--and I think I would've remembered that accent.

The line between rage and serenity is called "Xanax."

So to properly channel my mutant powers, I need to get another prescription?

GOD DAMN IT.

[identity profile] pennswoods.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy cow, is that you in your icon? You look like a Day of the Dead skull. What a cool look.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Heee! Yep! That was my 2011 Halloween costume. The makeup for the second version was better, IMO. The icon is of the test run.

Oh, and here's a full-body pic of the costume (http://www.flickr.com/photos/chernobylred/6298560289/in/set-72157611086057662/).

These are so awesome! Wow!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

I'll probably use Sherlock for this year, since I'll have it handy. Hardly anyone will get it, though. *sigh*

[identity profile] msmitti.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
welcome to most of my Halloweens. I was a chalk outline one year and the closest anyone came to guessing was "the road."

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
HA HA HA HA! Oh, man, that sucks.

Hey, if you wear Watson for Halloween, let me know. I'll have you come over to my office so the Sherlock-loving grad students in my department can see us in person.

I was also slightly disappointed with it. It just .. lacked the storyline and excitement of the previous flicks somehow to me.

I'd get into way more dicey situations if I could recuperate that quickly in a fight. On second thought, don't all the mutants have superior regenerative capabilities, really? So you could have a bonus power on top of that. Me? I'd probably go for invisibility, but get "stuck" with something less interesting.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
don't all the mutants have superior regenerative capabilities, really

There are a lot of Marvel mutants (X-men and others) who have it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Healing_factor#Marvel_Comics), but I think a lot of them are just better at avoiding injury in the first place. =D

For my bonus power, I'd choose telekinesis.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)

Ooh, good one. I like it. I'd have chosen some sort of flying at one time, but now I'm older and wiser, I think invisibility would work better in bad situations.

Plus.. whacking someone who can't see it coming?

Awesome.

Shit, honey. I just want to get canned goods down from the top shelf without dragging over the step-stool.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)

Well, you can see how my week has gone from my statement.

I forsee some serious fucking in my near future, because I'm too broke down to fight, and a footrace is out of the question.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Have fun!

[identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally agreed with you about January Jones and Michael Fassbinder. In the last week I've seen 2 movies with Fassbinder in them: "Shame" & "Hunger". He did an outstanding job in both of them, but I preferred "Shame".

Hey, good luck on that mutant power.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you see the Jane Eyre he did last year? It was amazing.

[identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I did not. But I will now!!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It was very VERY good.

[identity profile] tessagratton.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
As I read your post I kept thinking "there was something going on other than the Xavier/Erik/Raven character line?'

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, no, there wasn't. Not really. Oh, that silly bit with the former Nazi in the Hugh Hefner jacket, but other than that, ALL X/E/R ALL THE TIME.

[identity profile] tessagratton.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
OH KEVIN BACON. Right.

I like Kevin Bacon. But... I just forgot he was in that movie.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Charles/Erik is pretty much the only reason this movie needed to exist.

Oh, the vid-creator's LJ entry about it is here (http://arefadedaway.livejournal.com/324695.html) if you're interested.

Honestly? I could watch that video for days. Um. I think maybe I have. In fact, whenever I hear that song come on the radio, I have this Pavlovian response where I see the MARVEL logo flipping and I go to my happy/tragic gay love place.

[identity profile] tessagratton.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I should watch it a few more times and hopefully shift my Pavlovian response to that song away from Adele smoking to Erik/Xavier. WAY BETTER.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Lord, tell me about it. And you know how much I love looking at (http://clevermanka.tumblr.com/day/2011/10/19) people smoking (http://clevermanka.tumblr.com/day/2011/12/5).

[identity profile] tessagratton.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be like me doing sexy knife games at the bar every night. NOT WORTH IT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suA2Hy-0mxI).

[identity profile] orrin.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometime you and I will have to sit down and talk about Thor, because I think it might've been my favorite of the Marvel movies so far, excepting the first Iron Man.

As for First Class, though, I think we're pretty much on the same page. I liked about two-thirds of it (the two thirds that involved Erik/Xavier/Raven and sometimes Sebastian Shaw), and kind of hated the remaining third (which was unfortunately threaded throughout, so I can't just watch part of the movie then shut it off).

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I will happily attempt to be convinced that Thor is a better movie than I thought. Because with all that pretty? I'd really like to like it more.

[identity profile] orrin.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not even necessarily interested in converting you. It just seems like an odd anomaly in our liking patterns, and therefore bears investigation!

[identity profile] cmt2779.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I could remember what bothered me about the costumes for that movie now, since you commented on them, too. I definitely remember ranting for a few minutes to my friends after watching the movie, but they didn't really care about that part of it. :-(

Also, I loved that it was both Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy (I love him).

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The men's costumes were fine. They looked like normal things that normal guys would've worn (with Erik's being a little more mod and Charles's being a little more conservative). But the women's clothes looked like something the wardrobe department picked up from a current clothing store. What the hell. They sort of hinted at period-appropriate, but the only women who looked correct for the time period were the extras walking around the train station in Argentina in a deleted scene.

I mean, not even the underwear in the strip club was appropriate.

[identity profile] cmt2779.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the thing that most angered me about the costumes, now that I'm thinking about it more, was what they did with Rose Byrne's character. She's supposed to be a female CIA agent in the 1960s and she not once goes to work at the CIA dressed like a professional grownup of the time. There is absolutely no way a professional woman at that time would have worn skirts that short or hair the way she had it - she looked like a teenager and, consequently, would have had even less chance of being taken seriously. I was particularly upset by this because I got the sense that the writers wanted to call attention to this sexism in the 1960s workplace by including at least one scene of the men at work dismissing her because she's a woman, but her costume completely works against any argument that their dismissal of her is unfair since she doesn't look like a grownup.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Good points!

I hated what they did with her character (and that HORRIBLE haircut, yes) so much that I tried to ignore pretty much everything about her.
