Nobody could be that clever

SO! All you folks who watched "The Reichenbach Fall" on PBS for the first time last night. How ya doin' this morning? There are a few faculty members and grad students watching it and I told them to just swing by my office today. No reason, just...you know. I wanted to see their faces.

And you must see this entire Tumblr post.

In less-giddy news, the scarf didn't take the dye at all. Not a smidgen. So it must be made of some non-dye-friendly acrylic. God damn it. So now I gotta find a scarf.

I'm very curious to hear if anyone drops by for consoling. And yikes - going to be a challenge getting a scarf at this time of year (at least in this hemisphere).

going to be a challenge getting a scarf at this time of year

Tell me about it. UGH. I'm probably going to first look for some soft and fluffy fabric in an appropriate fiber. Maybe on a remnant table? Make that into a scarf...

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Picture of said scarf?
Never mind, found one. Hmm...
Oh, there's a different one also.
I'm assuming you're doing the Paul Smith version?

I don't care about that level of detail. I just need a royal blue scarf. Which, you know me and blue...I have nothing like that in my house.

[identity profile] miischelle.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn....we could have scarf searched on Saturday.
FAILLLLL!!!!!!!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
WHO KNEW.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)

Well.. I have a knitted scarf in a dusty blue, but it's not long enough to do that fancy doubled knot, but it might do for the look. It's a large knit.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, no large knits. I want a fine, soft, cashmere-like thing, and the doubled knot is sorta crucial.

Thank you for the offer, though!

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeh, I didn't think it was right, but thought I'd throw it out there, just in case.
I'll swing by the Sally after work. One never knows.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, bless you!

I wouldn't even mind if it was more of a summer-weight scarf, as long as it's a woven fabric and blue. Preferably with fringe.

*kiss*kiss*

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Fringing can be done easily enough, just rip out the weave on the ends.
If I have time and strike out there, I'll also check the Soc Service League for anything that can make such a scarf.

Oh oh! Last resort.. I saw lots of light scarves in Tarjhay being sold as hair accessories!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. Thanks!

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I correct in assuming this was the cliff-hanger season ending?

HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT TILL THE NEXT DAMN EPISODE, PBS????

This show and Downton Abbey could bankrupt me. Or drive me flat out INSANE. Or both.

Sorry 'bout the scarf, and good luck finding one!

[identity profile] miischelle.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll check through my scarves when I get home.
You know me and blue...

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
We, um, "checked the BBC version out from the internet" after it aired in the UK. Is it different at all than the US version? Because, the emotions should be eased a little in the end.

Well, except for the emotions stemming from knowing that the BBC is going to make us wait 1 year or longer before they make another 3 episodes. Christ.

And that Tumblr post -- OMG.

[identity profile] geekmom.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming it's the same, but I haven't rewatched them. Also when are they going to figure out the WORLD part of www? If you air an episode in the UK, air it in the US sometime before, say six months later. Sheesh.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this was the season ender and they don't start filming third season until 2013. HAPPY WAITING!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw the UK version, too. I don't imagine it's much different. Most of the angst is coming from the pain of watching John, not the issue of a death. So from that angle the emotions aren't eased at all.

OH, JOHN. ALL MY FEELS.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, thank you!

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
So from that angle the emotions aren't eased at all.

Ah, probably not. I suppose I view it from the 3rd person point of view, so I felt some ease after the final scene. Had they not shown that, and me not having tons of Sherlock knowledge, I would have been right grumpy not knowing until they decided to release another season.

Except, I would have assumed it to be the case because then they wouldn't have another season and I would have looked it up and figured it out.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
From the perspective of John, it would probably be better if Sherlock was dead. Imagine John's feeling of betrayal when he finds out he isn't. That's what most of the fandom is freaking out over, because the show has been set up (IMO) to manipulate everyone into falling in love with John.

[identity profile] sdemory.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
My feels were sort of cushioned by the fact that, for once, I felt like John was pulling a hard Watson during Reichenbach. Sherlock telegraphed so very, very much ("It's just a trick, a magic trick," followed later by "Keep your eyes on me." Oh, Sherlock! If you'd finished with "Nothing up my sleeve!" it couldn't have been more obvious) that it seemed pretty much a given before BikeLock almost ran John over post-jump.

I thought that the real knife in the gut was Mycroft's scene. That sense of stiff upper-lipped helplessness was physically painful. Great, great stuff.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I am waffling all over the place as to whether John Knows Or Not. Immediately after watching it back in January I was in the Doesn't Know camp, and then I thought Maybe He Does, but now I'm back to Still In The Dark.

My theory: Sherlock wanted John to see the body switcheroo and that got ruined by the bicyclist. Afterward, he had no way of telling John without tipping someone off. But then I've got this other theory that despite all the character development of second season, Sherlock still doesn't trust Humans and Emotions and thinks if he lets John in on the secret, John will give something away and everyone will wind up shot dead.

Frankly, I'm happy with either way Moffat chooses to play this out, although my first theory feels more romantic and you know me with my slash goggles.

Agree with you 100% on the acting in this show. Just...DAMN.

I also have A Moriarty Theory, if you're interested.

[identity profile] sdemory.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll give you one that'll let the slash goggles rest lightly on your elegant brow:

Protecting John was Sherlock's main goal. He kept him in the dark because he doesn't trust moving parts not to move, not because he doesn't trust humans and emotions (although he doesn't,) and John was too dim with emotion to pay attention to the big, flashing I AM FAKING MY DEATH sign over his head.

But. Busy street, street that goes multiple directions, alleys in many places... why bother with BikeLock? Why not just fade into the shadows? Although Sherlock's got more than a bit of showmanship in his soul and might find some pleasure in seeing the plan click, there are plenty of ways to do that.

I assume that he pulled out BikeLock because a) he wanted to slow John down to let the rest of the cast get to their marks and b) because he wanted to be near John to some degree. Sherlock figured that John's life would be safer and better without him, so he took himself off of the board. Cumberbatch's Sherlock's always at his best when he's trying to be helpful and not quite hitting it (the insistent look of "What? I'm trying to be helpful!" when he dissected all the reasons that Jim from IT was gay was pretty much priceless,) and I think this plan is his way of being helpful without quite hitting the mark.

So. Goggle up and pass me this Moriarty Theory of yours. Mine's pretty straightforward... we've never seen Moriarty. We actually have seen Richard Brook, who's been playing the role from go as the face of the actual Moriarty.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I like your theory! I like the idea that he planted the bicyclist. Yes, okay, I'm going with John In The Dark. Thank you. And OH, POOR JOHN!

Our Moriarty theories sounds similar. I think yes, Richard Brook was just Richard Brook and might've been brilliant and amazing but was just one of many Moriartys because Moriarty is a collective. There are many many many Moriartys and perhaps even Irene is a Moriarty (or at least on her way). This theory makes me a little sad because I fucking love Andrew Scott and the loss of his character will be sad-making. But to avoid the story going off into Soap Opera Not Really Dead Land, he really really really needs to be dead and stay dead.

I HAZ AN ELEGANT BROW.

YOU CAN, INDEED, HAZ BROW ELEGANCE

[identity profile] sdemory.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Not planted. Was.

Look at the scene carefully. The bicyclist was Sherlock. Same build, same hair under the skull cap. We see Sherlock on the roof because John sees Sherlock on the roof.

John's in the dark, Sherlock wanted to be near him one last time. Ergo, BikeLock.

SO MUCH FEELS.

I need to see Sebastian Moran now. NEED. Hard-ass Afghan war vet turned heroin smuggler Moran, just to give John his own nemesis... with his strings being pulled by Irene-as-Moriarty, of course.

Re: YOU CAN, INDEED, HAZ BROW ELEGANCE

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS!

How have I not heard your theory before? It's brilliant. Man, Tumblr and Fanfic fail!

Re: YOU CAN, INDEED, HAZ BROW ELEGANCE

[identity profile] sdemory.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! And I'm the guy who hates mushy stuff in his fiction!

I think it's just the fact that no one had the guts to dub a character "Bikelock" until me.

But, yeah. Bet you a buck and a beverage of your choice that the bicyclist was Bikelock.

Re: YOU CAN, INDEED, HAZ BROW ELEGANCE

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Hours later, and I'm still giggle-snorting at "Bikelock" TBH.

[identity profile] cmt2779.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I watched the episode ages ago (thank you, internet), but I remember saying out loud at the beginning, when I saw the title of the episode, that if Sherlock tricked John into thinking he was dead I was going to be seriously angry. By the end of the episode, I was in tears but no longer angry at Sherlock. That was masterfully done.

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
And there's another thing-why only THREE F-ING EPISODES IN A SEASON????

I guess they do cram a metric ton of info, dialogue, and clues into those three episodes, but C'MON!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I think the show is very well written. I know lots of people have issues with Moffat and I am completely sympathetic to their complaints. But the man tells a good story.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The BBC has always run on a very different production schedule (and production mentality) than U.S. television. I don't complain, though, 'cos I'd rather have three shows per season of this quality than twelve shows of the usual crap that shows up on our screens here.

[identity profile] cmt2779.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I have issues with Moffat - they're just not so present in Sherlock as they are in recent Doctor Who.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured you were probably one of the People With Issues. I haven't seen anything more than fanvids of any of the recent Dr. Who stuff*, and I think I'm okay with keeping it that way.

*And by recent, I mean anything past the seventh doctor.

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, true.
But I'm not a patient person-I WANT IT NOW! ;)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
HA HA HA! Poor thing. I'm lucky to be a very patient and, frankly, non-curious person. Also, not knowing what happens next opens up the opportunity for a lot of wild fanfiction story lines and I am more than fine with that.

[identity profile] cmt2779.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, but I love 9 and 10! (I liked the eighth Doctor as well, even though the movie is terrible. I just like Paul McGann.) Matt Smith is good as the Doctor, too, but I've been less of a fan of his seasons just because the feel of the show and the kind of arcs it takes are so different under Moffat than they were under Russell T. Davies.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure they're great. I just don't allow myself to get sucked into shows that are still being aired. That almost always ends badly for me. =/

[identity profile] cmt2779.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, fair enough. I have had bad experiences in that way, too. I think I made an exception for Doctor Who because - given its very long history - I figured it was possible it might not end any time soon and I just really wanted to watch it. :-)
