In which I aspire to BAMF-ness

So, for those of you who are still curious, I know what Chicken Pluckers are in Crossfit parlance. Chicken Pluckers are Fucking Crazy. Pop up into a handstand (not a headstand, a handstand) against the wall. Spread your legs a bit to get some balance/ballast. Pull one hand up quick into your chest and then put it back down before you fall down. Repeat with the other hand. HA HA HA HA HA!!!!

I practiced my teddy bear headstands.

*snort*

We did a crap-ton of stuff yesterday what with a long warmup and tons of skill set work, so didn't even start the WOD until 5:30. And it just about killed me. We were supposed to do a 50-ft walk with two barbells (45lb each), but I don't yet have the wrist strength to keep them level. Man, I tried, but those things were like see-saws. No matter where I gripped them, they just teetered thunk down to the ground at one end. So I got to use kettlebells. The girl doing the WOD with me (again, there were only two of us) carried the barbells with a ten pound weight at the ends of each one. Fifty-five pounds of crazy unbalanced barbell in each hand, you guys. Talk about a BAMF. She was awesome. Okay, so a 50-foot Farmer's Walk with the weights, then twenty-five burpees. Three times. Halfway through my second set of burpees, I was like oh shit, and by the time I got to the third set, I could only do four burpees at a time. Did I mention we were outside? In the dirt and grass and sun? Yeah. That, too. Jesus. At one point, I was pushing myself up off the ground, feeling like I was on my five-hundredth burpee instead of my fifty-fifth, and I thought "this is the hardest thing I have ever done in my life."

BAMF girl finished her WOD while I was still doing my second set of burpees, but she stayed outside with me the whole time I was finishing mine (which means she stayed outside for twice as long as she had to) and called out encouragement and support along with the coach. Super helpful things like "You are doing great!" "Just one more this set and then take a breather. Just one more and then walk it off!" "Hard breaths out, hard breaths out and then get back in it!" "You can do this, you are doing this right now, you've got this!"

I especially loved that last one--it's getting filed away with "Even when you're tired." Because how awesome is that idea? Think you can't do something? Bullshit. You can do it. You're doing it right now.

I finished the WOD in just under fifteen minutes. And even though I was the slowest, weakest person in the box last night, I still left feeling like a fucking rock star. I <3 my Crossfit Lawrence.

You have a woman named after Nightcrawler's sound effect? That's awesome.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-16 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Who knew there were so many BAMFs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BAMF_%28disambiguation%29)?

[identity profile] chronovore.livejournal.com 2012-06-16 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah.

I take it this one is a B.A.M.F. of the mo-fo variety?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-16 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep! Not only was she totally bad-ass mo-fo, she was friendly and encouraging. Awesome, awesome chick!

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2012-06-16 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
There's also *bamf* the sound that Windows/Microsoft programs made when you made a mistake.
Oh.. and Elton John's "Bennie and the Jets" that one chord at the beginning, we called it bamf.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2012-06-16 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)

Burpees?
:raises eyebrow and sideways glances at you:

Be careful, luv.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-16 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
No worries. The hip pain issues were 100% caused by nobody ever showing me how to do them right. After Thomas (CFL's owner) spent almost an hour working with me on squats, my hips has only given me problems when I neglect doing that movement for several days in a row!

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2012-06-16 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)

Wow, cool!
I'm going to ask Jenn Osborn (our water fitness gal) to work with me on shoulder/upper back, because beside years of faulty bra sizes and big boobs, I'm willing to bet a good trainer can help "fix" my faulty technique in upper body movement.
I wish I could afford trying CFL.. maybe later when I'm back to having a steady income.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-16 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Good luck! I hope the two of you can figure out some movements that will help you out.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2012-06-16 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Know what? You're already a BAMF for keeping at this hardest stuff you've ever done.

LOVE the new go-sentence!

FOR A GIVEN VALUE OF STRAIGHT!

The only reason Martin Freeman says that (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/8531671/Sherlock-is-the-gayest-story-in-the-history-of-television-says-Martin-Freeman.html) is because he never watched due South.

I had to try doing the Chicken Plucker thing[1], but psyched myself out with the amount of hard floor, unforgiving objects, and unfamiliarity with the move; I was, barely, able to push myself up from a headstand into a handstand, which totally should not have been that fucking hard...

[1] Because, hey, crazy!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-16 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Going upside down can be scary. I'm not afraid to go upside down, but I am afraid of falling on my head. Which has totally happened already and was not so cool. =/

Let me know when you master your Chicken Plucker technique. =D

You know, as a guy with a compressed disc in my neck from exercise injuries, I support you in your decision to NOT RISK giving yourself a professional wrestler style piledriver.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2012-06-16 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
totally should not have been that fucking hard

Any new move - even one that doesn't seem that much different than what you already do - is TOTALLY hard. All those supporting, interstitial muscles? Some of them never see much action. I discovered this recently (at Crossfit, of course): I can do tons of neutral-arm-position pull-ups, with a weight vest too, but straight-bar pull-ups? WAY harder. And that's a movement I do all the time.

Oh, I forgot to mention, we also played around with holding ourselves up (arms straight down at our sides) in the rings. HA HA HA HA HA RIGHT! *wipes tear*

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2012-06-16 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, that sounds like a 3-hour session.

YOU CAN DO THIS!
YOU'RE ALREADY DOING THIS!
YOU'VE GOT THIS!

[identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com 2012-06-17 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to attempt those chicken plucker things, now. I can do a wall handstand with no problems, so maaaaybe....

Too bad I woke up with another freaking cold! My hubby got sick, and as of last night, I have it, too. Argh. This one had better leave sooner than that last one, and with no ear aches! Gah.

So today has been spent mostly in bed or on my arse.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-18 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Geez, you're getting sick a lot lately. Suxxor.

[identity profile] pennswoods.livejournal.com 2012-06-18 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
You are a rockstar. Those chicken things sound insane!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-18 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Those chicken things are insane. When I do one, eventually, that video will be ALL OVER this LJ, I tell you what.
