Not really, no

My life as a game show:

Sometimes my dad sends me stuff in the mail. Mostly newspaper clippings or cut-outs from the comic pages. Yesterday, I received this article, from the Indianapolis paper, along with a card that asked "Is this Fandom?" No, Daddy. No, that is not fandom.

Srsly.

There are so many problems with this situation, I can't even.

HA HA HA! Fortunately, the wankers are few and far between on my LJ. Or, at least, if they're here, they keep it to themselves.

[identity profile] alryssa.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I just really really really wanted to use that gif and this was the perfect excuse~

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised you haven't used it on ontd_p!

[identity profile] alryssa.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure the opportunity will present itself soon, the community's been near overrun with fail commenters lately. :/

SECONDED!

[identity profile] miischelle.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm amazed this was in the paper...

Slow news day in Indiana.

The charming naivete of the older generation is occasionally horrifying.

Someone in our marketing department at my day job somehow thought it would be a good idea to put GIMONGOUS BANNER on a local mall with the slogan "Your other friend with benefits".

oh my god, the facepalm.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
OTOH, I, personally, would be more inclined to shop there.

[identity profile] etcet.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
We're a credit union. It's just... "really, guys? are you this naiive, or are you trying to pull one over on senior management?"

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Where's that gif of Sherlock & Holmes sitting in the royal parlor, where Sherlock is wrapped in a sheet, and they burst out laughing?

Well, imagine it right....

here!

YES, PERFECT!

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, technically, that IS a fandom...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
No. It isn't. It's a subculture.

I'm sorry, you're trying to prove a point by posting an image from the Brunching Shuttlecocks?

Absolutely! That flowchart is famous.

LOVE your Watson gif.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That flowchart is famous.

Charlie Sheen is famous. That doesn't make him right or reliable.

The Batman gif on the other hand, is a thing of beauty.

I challenge you to look at the full-size version of the fandom chart (click to do so) and tell me that this is not how the various geeks see themselves hierarchically. Sadly, they left off "people who make their own clothing" and "costumers." Where would you put them? Wonderfully, you would fit both those categories :-D

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Geek culture is a sub-culture, not a fandom, in my view. See my explanation to [livejournal.com profile] _luaineach, below. So any chart that starts off with saying that Geek is a fandom is automatically made irrelevant to me.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_luaineach/ 2012-06-21 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd agree. Although I'd agree with [livejournal.com profile] chernobylred below that it is also a subculture. From my view it is a fandom that's grown into a subculture but, as someone not a fandom chick at all, I don't particularly differentiate between furry fandom and other fandoms, other than on 'how elaborate is it' scale. I recognize that people involved in other fandoms like to differentiate themselves (the comic graphic you posted nailed it) but as someone outside it, it's all the same.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
To me, fandom requires some sort of outside media culture influence.

For example, one isn't in the fandom of BDSM--one is, rather, involved in the subculture. Could one be in a fandom for Rice's Sleeping Beauty books? Yes. Do the two overlap? Yes. But I don't see BDSM, and all its various facets and sub-subcultures (heh, I made a pun) as a fandom.

I realize this is totally arbitrary, but at some point a distinction has to be made between things that are a larger mentality, usually based on one's sense of self-identification (internal), and things that are directly created and inspired by another person which we then choose to incorporate into our lives (external).

And this is getting WAY TOO THINKY for me and my brain right now. =D

[identity profile] alryssa.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Great, now I'm being reminded of the kinky furries I see in SL, and that is something nobody should have to think about.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
HAVE SOME PRETTY, DARLING. Take your mind off it:

It really shouldn't be acceptable for a human being to be that pretty.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
On the other hand, I do NOT suggest that CR get into a discussion of furries with her dad.

NO WORRIES THERE.

[identity profile] apocalypticbob.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Envisions trying to explain furries and yiffing to my dad.

*dies*

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Some things it's best they just never know. Fuck, I wish some things I didn't know.

[identity profile] alryssa.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
TELL ME ABOUT IT, OH MY GOD.

[identity profile] alryssa.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Woof!

[identity profile] etcet.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Fortunately, this conversation would fit well over dinner with my folks, since it's almost de rigeur that *somebody's* sex life gets brought up.

me: "Oh, hey, speaking of that school mascot... you know there's a whole bunch of people who get off on being dressed up like that? or imagine they're animals?"

my folks: "you remember those really heavy wool sweaters your aunt alice made? and how hard they were to get chocolate ice cream out of?"

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeesh.

Sex and Religion = OFF THE TABLE when it comes to my family conversations.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, the article is online, too (http://www.indystar.com/article/20120616/ENTERTAINMENT/206160331/It-s-more-than-costumes)!

I think I only know one or two furries, but I wonder how many people I know are secretly furries but not "out" about it....

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll file that under "things I honestly do not want to know."

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
DO NOT EAT THE HAMMIE!

[identity profile] hdsqrl.livejournal.com 2012-06-21 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
This post and the entirety of its comments has absolutely made my day. I was glad I wasn't drinking when the article loaded. I need to hang out with your dad.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2012-06-22 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
You have an impressive and endless array of fine images of Loki's alter ego.

Mmmmmm OBSESSIONS.
