A waste of a base coat

[livejournal.com profile] radiantmephit provided me with what company’s employees gave the most to Obama and Romney. Check out number five on Obama's list. How interesting.

On Saturday, during Henna Time, [livejournal.com profile] hdsqrl and I went to Target to kill some time while my indigo dye set up and [livejournal.com profile] nottygypsy and [livejournal.com profile] purpledumbass prepped the house for the Smoker cast party. I was foolishly tempted by some stupid Revlon nail polish that I paid way too much for, even at 50% off. Why oh why do I forget that non-salon polishes come with nasty, cheap-ass brushes that leave uneven, messy color? To add insult to injury, the top holographic fleck coat is woefully thin on the hologram flecks, which (when they do come off the brush) are lumpy and poorly distributed. My nails look like they were painted by a six-year-old. Ugh. Worst. Manicure. Ever. I am annoyed every time I look down at my hands. I can't wait to get home so I can take off this horrible, horrible paint job.

Out of curiosity, which nail polishes are salon brands? I haven't been to a nail salon in years.

My two favorites are OPI and Zoya. China Glaze is a distant third. For my base coat, I swear by Nailtiques, and I only use Seche Vite for my top coat.

NAIL POLISH SNOB. Yes.

DAMMIT, Revlon!! I had such high hopes for that, too!

Bankers love money-sharks! Hooray for early voting today!

Phooey on the nail polish unfortunateness.

If I ever have to move from my regionally-owned bank, I know which five banks to avoid, now.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2012-10-29 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a handy way to look at it.

[identity profile] djangodurango.livejournal.com 2012-10-29 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, good, I thought those sorts might be what you were talking about.

My favorite favorite nail polish, NYC's Canal Street, has been discontinued, but OPI's Ger-Manicure looks to be about the same color. I'm not opposed to paying more for a more quality product and if it has a better brush, that's just a bonus.

Are OPI polishes somewhat thick? I prefer polishes I only need to do two coats with to get full coverage.

I'm also thinking about canceling my credit card. It's Working Assets, but the card is financed through Bank of America. Not cool.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2012-10-29 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
US Bank is a national bank, yes, but at least they weren't part of the financing hijinks that beat up the economy, and they finance themselves. I don't feel bad about using them so far....

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-10-29 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never had to use more than two coats for an OPI polish that wasn't designed to be a non-opaque color. OPI and Zoya are both super high pigment.

Zoya is nice because their website (http://www.zoya.com/) tells you on a scale of 1 to 5 the opacity of any color in their collection. And if you sign up for the Zoya email newsletter list thing, they send you killer promo discount offers. I get at least two BOGO offers a year, and sometimes those come with free shipping if you order enough bottles--usually six. So buy three bottles, get three free, with free shipping.

CAN'T AFFORD NOT TO BUY.

lol at all the banking group employees on the list for R-money. Not one company that isn't in the financial sector. What a shock.

[identity profile] alryssa.livejournal.com 2012-10-29 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
OPI VERY MUCH YES. I love their brushes. I can actually sort of do my own nails when I (rarely) get the urge to do it, and they don't look completely shitty as a result.

[identity profile] alryssa.livejournal.com 2012-10-29 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding OPI rec here. I have a few colours of theirs, and I'll *willingly* pay $7 a bottle to have a decent brush and excellent colour distribution - and this is coming from someone who is horribly inexperienced at doing their own nails.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-10-29 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
OPI has, hands down (ar ar ar), the best brushes.

This is my surprised face.

60% or more of IRS employees are women, and that number may hold good through most of government. Even the military is giving more to Obama.

You think we want a slithery f*ck like Romney in office -- or worse, Ryan? FUCK NO.

OpenSecrets is a pretty interesting site. I could lose a few hours and some sanity perusing...

Reading this, I'm wondering if my laughable manicure abilities might be largely due to cheap polish; must Experiment!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-10-29 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Quality polish will make a huge difference, but it does take practice to get a clean paint job. Start with lighter colors, obviously. Avoid dark colors your first few times until you get the hang of not covering your cuticles. =)

[identity profile] djangodurango.livejournal.com 2012-10-29 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I am thinking of going and getting a bottle after work. I had to get a shot today so I deserve a reward.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-10-29 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Happy shopping! Also, that OPI Ger-Manicure color is Gorgeous. Wow.

Tthe trick my mom taught me as a little girl was to not worry about coloring in the lines, so to speak, so much as just getting an even coat on. And try not to go to thick with it 'cause it'll dry faster. Do two and then let it dry completely.

Then take a bath. All the polish on your skin will peel off, leaving the polish on your nails as if you didn't look like you were finger-painting before. Maybe touch up with nail polish remover and a flat eyeliner brush if needed, but it should mostly come off clean.

[identity profile] djangodurango.livejournal.com 2012-10-29 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! But looking at it, it looks a little orange. I think Oktoberfest might be a little more like Canal Street. Less orange, more purple. I'll see when I get there.

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2012-10-29 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I do because I suck at it and will get it all over my cuticles. What I don't get off with nail polish remover comes off the next time I take a shower.

Interesting how the high education, high innovation organizations are in the Obama camp and the top five in Romney's camp are banks. And no one should never do business in any way with bank of america.

You are the second person today that I have heard complain about Revlon polish. My other friends said that her color was bubbling. I think Revlon nail color is off the list forever.

I had a moment of weakness and picked up one of those magnetic polishes since I got a Walgreens gift card.
Now I'm afraid it will also be a regrettable purchase.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-10-30 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll certainly never buy it again.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-10-30 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's Sinful brand, you might be okay. I always had decent luck with that one. Not OPI, but certainly better than the other drug store polishes.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-10-30 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It galls me that Working Assets, a progressive company that gives a percentage of its profits (and a portion of my credit card fees) to progressive organizations uses Bank of America. BLAH.

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2012-10-31 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
There are drugstore Gel Polishes, I'm curious about them as I have been doing salon gels for a bit and am on a break. Hmmmmm.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2012-10-31 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Good luck.
