I can haz new doctor!
On
shrijani's recommendation, I made an appointment with Malati Harris to interview her about being my new Primary Care Physician. I was extra pleased to find out that Kiva, my wonderful acupuncturist, also uses Dr. Harris as her PCP.
shrijani warned me about the waiting room, and true enough, it was full of annoying children--but it's a family medicine & obstetrics clinic, so I can't fault the office for that. And really, that's my only complaint so far about my experience there.
They have an online patient portal so I can make appointments and schedule lab requests myself. I can email questions to Dr. Harris or her nurse, or whatever, through the portal. BRILLIANT.
Dr. Harris herself is personable, friendly, and entirely open-minded when it comes to non-allopathic medicine. She also has a nose piercing, so add +5 to her Awesome stats. She talked with me for quite a while about exercise. She goes to Underground Lab, which is a functional strength-focused gym here in town. She knew about CrossFit, but was scared by it (ha!), and was enthusiastic about helping me return to WODs. She is 100% on-board with approving any and all lab tests requested by Dr. Khosh. I don't need to make an appointment to talk with her about them--I just go to the patient portal, schedule a lab request, and she'll sign off on it, no questions asked.
WE HAVE A WINNER.
Icing on the cake is the initials for the practice is LFM&O. Just...say it out loud if you don't get it.

How long did it take to get an appt?

My reasons are: Less germ exposure, less chance of the doc already being over-scheduled and the kiddos that had to be picked up from school with fevers haven't been shuttled in yet.
Two weeks for a non-urgent appt isn't bad.

I'm really happy for you on that point... although I don't go as often as I'm sure they'd like me to do so. Heh.

so do you go to this practice also? Who do you see, and what do you think?Edit... just caught your other comment below.
Another good thing is that they are also affiliated with LMH, so records/specialists/hospital access is all easy-peasy.

Moments of FUCK YES I have had with doctors:
My parents' GP was my doctor for ages, and he treated everyone in my family with ADHD. I tried Strattera and it killed my sex drive (among other nasty side effects), right? I feared telling him that because I was young and unmarried and I'd heard horror stories of people's doctors not caring. Nope. I said, "I've lost my libido," and he said, "You're too young for that, let's try something else." And when I brought it up as a concern when I needed anti-depressants, he put me on Wellbutrin because it doesn't cause sexual side effects.
When I had Kaiser, my GP was happy about my being vegan, and when we discussed my seasonal allergies she gave me a print-out about an anti-inflammatory diet (and laughed and said, "You're already halfway there!") and made sure I was taking omega-3 fatty acids.
Good docs are worth their weight in fucking GOLD.

GOLD STAR FOR THAT DOCTOR

I just ADORE my Gyn; she's the one who helped with diagnosing my benign tumors and gave me the reference to a great surgeon in Wichita, and she is just fantastic about checking on my entire well being, not just my vagina! Last time I was in there, she made a point of discussing vaccines with me, and I went ahead and updated my tetanus right then and there, rather than wait for my next appointment with my GP (next October). I don't know if she can crossover to being a FP doc, but if she does, I'll drop my GP. Not that I dislike my GP; but....

She and her practice partner, another woman, retired from the obstetrics part of their practice several years ago, I think because they were nearly the only OB/Gyns in town not affiliated with the conglomerate that is our local hospital/clinic, and they were each other's only backups. Which meant when one went over for a delivery, the other did also, to serve as emergency surgical assistant. Every time a patient went into labor, the whole practice ground to a halt. This is my guess as to the motivations; I've not asked her.
She and her husband own the building their practices are in; he's an orthopedic surgeon, and also runs a PT/OT/Sports Medicine clinic. They are actively looking for some GPs or family practice docs to also join their clinic.
Sometimes I think she went into obstetrics for her own benefit; they've got... at least 4 kids, maybe six? And she's barely 5 feet tall, and 98 pounds soaking wet; how she managed to have that many kids.... :D
