No escape from reality

The Toast has an entire day (today) devoted to essays about V.C. Andrews books. LOVE IT. Yes, I totally read these as a teen. Secretly. With relish. My parents still don't know. Although I'm not entirely certain they'd even know who she is/was. But I am positive they wouldn't have approved. Flowers In the Attic and my seventh-grade best friend's mom's Harlequin Romance collection were my introduction to reading porn. I was twelve years old. THIRTY-ONE YEARS OF PORN READING Y'ALL.

Speaking of fuck yeahs and Freddie Mercury, I am so buying this tee shirt. Oh hell yes.

Today's Tumblr collection is: Tuesday, August 13: Cars.

I remember that my sister's friend had the passage about the stained mattress in the attic memorized, because I was stunned when she recited it verbatim. I read them too, but I didn't appreciate them *quite* that much.

Here's to 31derful years! ;)

Yeah, me, neither!

When I was in 9th grade, I lived more than a mile from school. During wintry weather, my friend Robert and I would hang out at the public library for an hour or so for my Dad to take us home. In the meantime, we would sit in the stacks reading Nancy Friday's books. That long and snowy winter, we made it through Secret Garden, Forbidden Flowers, and Men in Love.

NICE

I was too busy looking at your car porn to read about your other porn.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-08-13 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha ha ha ha ha! Glad you liked it.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2013-08-13 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay for porn! I started reading it when I was babysitting for our downstairs neighbors, she had Harlequins and he had dirty joke books.

Oh the Cars. Thank you for the GTO.

You're welcome! XOXO

I read those too, teen porn. Also Anne Rice, my 20's porn.

God, I still go back and re-read those Sleeping Beauty books once in a while. Certain parts, anyway...

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2013-08-14 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I KNOW! But I have gotten rid of mine for some reason.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-08-14 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I...might have more than one copy of them.

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2013-08-14 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
my favorite was her witches series, not as porny, but still some damn good sex! Also, history.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-08-14 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked the first one in that series, but the rest were sort of eh. My absolute favorite of her books ever is Cry to Heaven. Have you read it? So so SO good.

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2013-08-14 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure I did long ago, I read all of hers.

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2013-08-14 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
My first exposure to porn....probably WAS porn, in the form of my dad's Penthouse mags. Not so much the pictorials, but I devoured the letters!
It was only after that that I hit Harlequins (which were downright boring) and all the other bodice rippers I could get my hands on.

Loved the tumblr-those are some GORGEOUS CARS! Including yours and McKitterick's!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-08-14 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the Tumblr Love!

Harlequins were pretty boring. I was more fond of the Silhouette Desire imprint. They were a little racier.

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2013-08-14 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I was already past reading romances by the time those came along, at least for here in Kansas. My Harlequins were dominated by hard thighs, nary a penis in sight!

I never read the VC Andrews books, but I did steal my mom's Harlequin novels. I actually learned a lot about sex that way! And I can remember the first time I read a description of a man giving a woman oral sex: I thought, HOLY SHIT dudes are willing to do that?! Man, being an adult is gonna be AWESOME.

That, and I plowed through the Lasher series by Anne Rice when I was about fifteen/sixteen. Lots of sex.

[identity profile] aprilstarchild.livejournal.com 2013-08-15 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Hah, I just mentioned those in my comment. I loved them when I was a teenager. I haven't read them since; I dunno that they would stand up to rereading.

[identity profile] aprilstarchild.livejournal.com 2013-08-15 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, I can remember looking at a stack of someone's dad's Hustlers when I was, um, ten? Eleven?

I got all kinds of turned on and didn't know what the feeling really was or what to do about it!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-08-15 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
Being an adult really is awesome.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-08-15 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't see picture porn until I was in college. I have no idea how I managed to miss/avoid it...

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2013-08-16 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't think my mom would allow any of the really hard-core stuff in the house-only Penthouse & Playboy-the artsy ones, y'know!

That was my first exposure to any sort of BDSM, too! LOL!

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2013-08-16 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
She really took a swing to the religious right for a while there, until she realized just how fucked up the church had become. Now, she still professes as a Christian, but is pretty much agnostic-no church structure.
Anyway-the religious swing might have been the reason? I know a lot of people tossed her books when she pretty much repudiated writing them (or at least regretted them).
I'd love to find a set of the Sleeping Beauty books-but DAMN, they're pricey! And then I'd have to find an inconspicuous spot to keep them in....

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2013-08-16 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
OOH! *waves hand* YES, PLEASE, if no one else has already tossed their hat in!
And I'll buy from you, since I don't have much to exchange or barter, really....

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2013-08-16 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember I sold mine for space, had them all in hardback and moving them had become a pain. Wonder how much the kindle versions would be....

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-08-16 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Lemme see if I have the next week. Drop me an email if I forget.

[identity profile] rachel-nicole.livejournal.com 2013-08-20 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I stumbled across your journal, and I have to say I fell in love with it! I loved and secretly read VC Andrews also when I was very young ;) Would you mind being friends?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-08-23 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, I totally missed this comment--so sorry!!! Sure!

[identity profile] rachel-nicole.livejournal.com 2013-08-23 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks ;)
