Gimmick

With very, very, very few (but notable) exceptions, I most certainly have A Type when it comes to women. Men I'm more...forgiving? I've dated short guys, tall guys, skinny guys, beefy guys, blonde guys, dark guys, you get the idea. And I think most women are attractive in a general sense. But when it comes to women who sexually attract me, they almost always fall into a particular category, and it looks like this:

I lay the blame 100% on the movie that produced that still. As a teen watching that movie (clandestinely--I knew it was the sort of movie my parents would disapprove of) I realized with no small amount of discomfort that I really wanted to kiss that character in her post-transformation mode. At the beginning of the movie, in her bikini with the wavy 80s perm, she did nothing for me. STYLE IS IMPORTANT, YO.

The "do I want to do her or be her?" dilemma was never an issue. I knew right away that I wanted to hold that up against a wall and mash my face against hers. I wasn't sure what else there was to do at the time, but wow was I horrified to find myself curious to find out. I was (oh, let's be honest--still am) boy-crazy, so I was able to shelve those inclinations until I went to college, and then the full realization hit pretty fast. Hello, women's scholarship hall living.

The self-acknowledgement/labeling of being bisexual was difficult enough, and the story of my attempt to come out to my mother the summer after freshman year is a perfect (and by perfect, I mean morbidly hilarious) example of How Not To Be A Compassionate Parent. It's also one of the reasons I don't talk with my mother about anything more serious than health and nutrition. I love her, but the woman has issues. That's a completely different topic, though.

Anyway.

Honestly, I hadn't given much thought to that movie in years, but someone posted a vid containing clips from it in a femslash vid posted to the [livejournal.com profile] vidding community yesterday and I might have spent a few several minutes wrapped up in nostalgia while doing a Google image search.

Also mentioned on that vidding comm was this vid, which showcases women characters and is nothing short of amazing. Warning for some pretty horrific violence, but oh my god so incredible.

It's Tuesday, so that means I've got another collection up. Today is Tuesday, November 5: Adornment.

Huh. Never saw that movie. (Of course, my life in the mid-late 80s was pretty bizarre and far, far from popular culture).
She's pretty.

Lots of pretty in this post and tumblr. Me likey.

It's not a great movie. You didn't miss much. Except for the hot baby-dyke-looking chick.

Glad you liked!

[identity profile] msmitti.livejournal.com 2013-11-05 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It is supposedly an interpretation of Twelfth Night. They did another teen version of it (She's the Man--first time I saw Channing Tatum) that was a little more obvious. Character names and such.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-05 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Even as a Shakespeare lover, I would not have thought it was supposed to be an interpretation of Twelfth Night. The only thing it has in common is the cross-dressing and the girl falling for girl while the cross-dressed girl falls for a boy. Which...I guess isn't that common of a trope, now that I type it out.

I went to see it because the lead character was a student journalist and I was seriously into student journalism. Like, it was half my life. So a movie about a student journalist who dresses up to discover possible hidden sexism in the system? FUCKING SOLD!

ALL THE SHINY THINGS. SO SHINY.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-05 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW. This was a fun one to collect. I mean, they're all fun, but some are just mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

[identity profile] saffronhare.livejournal.com 2013-11-05 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember doing the menswear thing a lot in high school -- button-down shirts, fedoras, etc. Super fun.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-05 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I did, too! That's when I started wearing neckties. 80s fashion was sometimes really bad, but it had some good ideas.

I'd like to be able to pull off a look like that. At the least I'm moving towards an Annie Lennox type look with my hair. (Bleached with a pink stripe now.)

I don't have a particular "look" that I prefer in either men or women. Finding someone's look attractive seems to be either entirely random or a function of how well I like them.

Voices on the other hand... mmmm.... there are voices that can make me drool.

Finding someone's look attractive seems to be either entirely random or a function of how well I like them.

That would be a much better way to do it, wouldn't it? Alas, I am largely ruled by my visual impressions. Not sure what I could do to change that--although at this point in my life, I don't think it's worth the expenditure of energy to do so.

Coulda saved a lot of heartache in my younger days, though.

I'm not sure it saved me any heart ache. Liking someone doesn't always mean they are worth liking.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-05 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Good point.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2013-11-05 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That vid is awesome! Especially fun as I've seen most of those shows, so I get the back-story.

Now if only they'd included Meg....

INORITE

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm not really your type. ;)

OMG that vid.

OMG that BLING!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
So I'm not really your type

Not really, bb, no. But that doesn't mean I don't recognize your sexiness!

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
And I yours!

[identity profile] dotar-sojat.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Ah the 80s and the impressions they made. Me? I'm still looking for a tall black girl in a fur bikini. Thanks a lot Dungeons and Dragons cartoon!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Man I fucking loved that cartoon.

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too!

[identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
oh boy, this is a great entry.
I think about these issues ALL. THE. TIME.

and omgomgomg LOOOOVE the video!! There are so many awesome women characters in it! I watched it twice!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool, thanks! What do you think when you think about these issues? I'd love to see a post about that sometime, if you're comfortable with doing that.

So happy to hear you liked the vid. It's a lot to take in for just one sitting! I watched it a couple times, too.

[identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com 2013-11-07 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I think about how my sexuality doesn't fit into any label other than "queer identified." I might post about it sometime, but I don't talk much about my alcoholism or sexuality. I'll think about it.

not "like," LOVE!

[identity profile] alryssa.livejournal.com 2013-11-07 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
And here I am, with the, "Yeah, that look? That's my thing, right there."

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-07 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
GURRRRRL I KNOW.

And you wonder why whenever you say stuff like "I'm just not very photogenic" or "I've never been pretty" I get all

Sassy minxes, the both of you.

[identity profile] skyflame.livejournal.com 2013-11-08 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
I saw that movie a number of times (it was on heavy rotation on HBO for a while), enough that I was mildly annoyed when Hollywood remade it.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-08 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, I don't think I've met many people who saw the movie. Neat!
