Am-brain-dextrous

This perfectly illustrates why I find the whole PINK FOR BREAST CANCER thing repugnant.

In other news, Neighbor Lady was horrified to hear about her dog's behavior and apologized profusely when I told her. I went over right after I finished at the gym, so I had shorts on and could show her the puncture wound. Yesterday she took the dog (his name is Jessie James, btw, I should have mentioned that earlier) to the vet to confirm nothing was wrong and that he was up to date on all his shots (there wasn't, he was). She also brought an apology plant which may or may not find itself re-gifted depending on the light levels required. Nothing but extreme low-light plants survive in our house.

So that's that and so far the bite looks to be healing fine. It's still tender and the bruise is starting to show, but (happily) it doesn't look infected.

Check it out. I use the left and right sides of my brain pretty equally. My left side edges out the right by just a hair (56% to 44%) but apparently most people have a vastly more dominant side.

I gotta make tonight's session at the gym count for something. I missed a session last week because of the Indy trip, and Monday's showing was incredibly bad for a number of reasons. I forgot a hair band. I forgot a face towel. My MP3 player died after the first five minutes. My leg was still a bit sore from the bite. To top it off, it wasn't a high-energy day and I felt weak--that happens from time to time and it's normal, but it was the nail in the coffin for Monday's gym activities. I did them (most of them--I skipped the last set of split-squats and hamstring curls), but I didn't feel awesome like I usually do after exercise. Friday night I have a long-awaited social engagement, so I might be cutting things short that day, too. So tonight is Make It Count Night. Rawr.

Aha, another ambithinkster! My brain came out as the exact flip side of yours--56% right, 44% left.

So glad your bite is healing well, and that your neighbor did the right thing. May the awesomeness be complete at the gym tonight.

How cool!

Thanks for the gym encouragement! I admit, I am not feeling it right now. It's a rainy, blustery day and UGH. I just want to curl up on the couch with some hot tea.

*shudder* I wholly agree on the commercialisation of pink for breast cancer.

Your neighbour deserves a lot of dog owner rewards for that response; it's really easy to slip in belligerence and defensiveness in that situation. Good for everybody!

Hoping for good gym things.

A friend of mine (whose mom died of breast cancer) says that he in particular hates the No Bra For Breast Cancer Day (October 13). He says it's like having a tap dance exhibition to raise awareness for amputees.

[identity profile] msmitti.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
that is a really good analogy.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Luckily, he's the sort of person who was okay with me laughing at that when he told me that.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)

Did you know that the No Bra day is actually in July, but some idiot decided that tricking impressionable young women into bouncing around braless "to support the cause" once a year wasn't enough?

I froth at the pinkwashing as well, and this year's motorboating campaign (http://www.policymic.com/articles/70147/why-breast-cancer-awareness-month-is-actually-a-huge-insult-to-women)left me even more furious.

In happier news, yay for the neighbor.. I hope she has an idea now that lunging, even happily, isn't cool for Jesse to do.

I know that I'm an equal brain side user as well, but the dancer goes either way, switching once I watch it long enough, and I only put my left hand on my head because I had my right hand using the mouse ;) Anyway, it told me I'm slightly more right-brained, by about six points.

Yah. Pfft.
As if the sexualization of breast cancer awareness isn't enough, let's promote rape culture in the same breath!

Kudos to the foundation for refusing their money, even though the dumbasses' response just further proves their warped attitude.

OMG the Pink...... with you. 100%

Not surprisingly, I'm very right brained.

I'm hoping I can make myself go to the pool today - I went outside during lunch and it's So COLD. Commitment for mutual exercise solidarity?

Clevermanka's diligence keeps me going, too!

I'm like you, not so ambi-brained:
28% left-brained, 72% right.

Of course you use both sides of your brain! I'd be worried if you didn't.

Ha ha. =b

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, wait! I didn't see there was a URL in the comment. Just read the article.

Huh.

Well, that's disappointing.

[identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is it disappointing?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
'Cos I think the idea is fun! Ah well, Science is a harsh but fair mistress.

[identity profile] hdsqrl.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY for super-apologetic neighbor lady!

You'll kill it tonight at the gym - I just know it. :)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Wooo! Thank you for the vote of confidence!

[identity profile] saffronhare.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's a stunning result. I'm 62% right-brained and 38% left-brained. People around me have always said -- and I've always believed -- that I'm pathologically left-brained. Gonna have to ... er, think on this. :)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-06 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh! Well, you know what they say about online tests...and of course there's the issue that [livejournal.com profile] shanmonster pointed out, above.

Although I don't know that it's necessary to consider right brain/left brain as anything more than a metaphor and still use the results to understand the way we think--no matter what parts of our brains we're using.

[identity profile] nottygypsy.livejournal.com 2013-11-07 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Gonna take the brain test after dinner, hope you rocked the gym.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-07 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I...didn't. I'll rock it tonight.

Last night after work I nearly broke down into tears at the idea of exercising. No exaggeration. It was pretty bad.

[identity profile] kalimeg.livejournal.com 2013-11-07 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
IN October I was terribly tempted to add blue dye to the pink water in the KC Plaza fountain so it would squirt purple. Now that would be nice.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-07 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god they make the fountain pink?

Image

[identity profile] kalimeg.livejournal.com 2013-11-08 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, they adde pallid pink to the big fountain on JC Nichols. Meyer Fountain is also contaminated annually.

Brain half test is unfair!
I can switch the dancer at will. She tends to go one direction at first, but I can close my eyes and then she'll be going the other way.

The other sucky thing about pinkwashing is the fellas.
Due to the massive marketing campaign, breast cancer research is the best funded cancer research out there. By two or three times.
However, prostate cancer kills in about the same amounts, and there is no big "Race for the Cure" or major sports teams dressing up in blue.

Gym... gym... oh, yeah. That was the place I used to go to. Don't be a me. Go.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-07 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The other sucky thing about pinkwashing is the fellas.

Okay, hey, I appreciate that prostate cancer is A Serious Thing and the fact that my partner's family is high risk for it makes me particularly sympathetic, but what you just did there is not cool. If you want to talk about the lack of publicity and funding for prostate cancer on your LJ, that would be great. Coming to a woman's journal and commenting on an item that affects a lot more women than men and then saying things about "But What About Teh Menz?" isn't great. It's an aspect of something called Derailing (http://finallyfeminism101.wordpress.com/resources/mirror-derailing-for-dummies/) and I don't like it or tolerate it. In the future, when commenting here, please check yourself.

[identity profile] blackdwarv.livejournal.com 2013-11-07 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. Not entirely, but I respect your stance. I will point out that breast cancer funding is still the best funded in terms of amounts and amount of grants (http://www.cancer.org/research/researchprogramsfunding/currentlyfundedprojects/current-grants-by-cancer-type), and it beats out the next best (colon, which all peoples have) by twice the amount.

I pointed out prostate cancer because it affects the other 50% of the population, and has very similar rates in getting it and fatality rates. However the research for it gets roughly a third the amount of funding. (I won't even go into the issue of how men simply do not go to the doctor until something is about to fall off...)

As the rest of my points had already been made by others, I brought up something that hadn't been said yet - The breast cancer awareness media machine has simply overshadowed all other forms of cancer research.

I understand. I came and friended you through tenuous connections because I thought you were a pretty cool person. However, I realize that I'm really not welcome here, so I shall not come back again. Be well, continue being awesome. I wish it could have been otherwise.

[identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com 2013-11-07 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
oh god, I missed the entry about the dog bite. OW OW OW. I'm glad the neighbor lady was horrified.

my brain is very very lopsided. oh well.

oh yeah, on the pink for breast cancer thing? you have to admit the pink mixer is pretty awesome.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-07 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Those mixers in general are pretty awesome. People who buy the pink one because they're "helping the cause" need smacked with a clue-by-four, though.

[identity profile] chronovore.livejournal.com 2013-11-11 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad to hear you're not going to turn into a werewolf, or were-terrier. Also happy the neighbor was graceful about it.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2013-11-11 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Me, too! On both counts!
