I can't even

Look! A real-life version of Descent, only with a happy ending! Women! Science! Awesome!

Also awesome: This article (from The Toast, of course) on internet-speak.

Not awesome: My fatigue levels are increasing and I am not happy about that. I start getting tired as early as 11am and by 1:00 I'm so desperate for my nap I can't even tell you. Today I slept the entire sixty minutes of my lunch and then lay there for another ten while I motivated myself to get up already. Ugh.

boo fatigue. Can you take your nap earlier or are your lunches staggered?

I kept waiting for the author to make some sort of comparison or reference with Ebonics and I was sorely disappointed when that didn't happen.

Lunches are staggered. I'm not so much upset as to when I have to take the nap as that I'm so desperate for it. Hell, I could use another one right now at 4:30 to be honest.

The linguistics article is very good, but I am getting sick of people calling Tumblr Speak (or whatever you want to call it) a dialect. It is *not* a dialect. In order for Tumblr Speak to be a dialect, we would be using it all the time, and switching out or into it would require some sort of effort. Learning different dialects and switching between them is akin to learning and switching between different languages. There's a reason for the saying "a language is a dialect with an army and a navy."

What Tumblr Speak is is a *register* of language. It is a different level of formality that we can easily go in and out of based on the requirements of the situation. There are tons of registers in the English language - how you speak on a job interview, when giving a presentation, when asking a question in class, when hanging out with friends, when with family, etc etc. The thing with registers is that you can use multiple registers in the same conversation with the same person. In a conversation with a friend, I wouldn't use three different dialects, but I could easily use three or more registers.

I'm gonna put my own slothfulness down to the change in seasons. I love snow, and I like winter, but my normally tired self gets even more tired this time of year.

SEVEN INCHES?! These are some tiny science women!

I agree, no it's not a dialect.

In a conversation with a friend, I wouldn't use three different dialects, but I could easily use three or more registers.

And I often do!

See [livejournal.com profile] athenaartemis's comment just below here to see why I didn't expect that to happen and am honestly relieved it didn't.

Isn't that awesome! I have wiggled my way through caves like that before (unfortunately I found no ancient fossils) and it was amazing...for those of us who have no claustrophobia issues. =D

Yeah, I'm sure the season has something to do with it. Note to self: Remember to be kind to your body and let it rest when it needs to!

Well, it's seven inches at the smallest point. The hole is pretty irregular. I can fit through an opening if the smallest point is nine inches and I'm not a small girl.

That's me sitting inside the corner cabinet of our kitchen that I crawled through so I could install a wine rack in it.

Cool article. I should probably start reading the Toast. All the cool kids like it.

Oh, man, it's so good.

"Look! A real-life version of Descent, only with a happy ending! Women! Science! Awesome!"

I laughed!

Did anyone get eaten?

Insert appropriate "Losing My Religion" lyric here.

Well, maybe the original inhabitants of the cave? Hard to tell.
