New - How do you get a guy to like you?

My weekend: Friday night, a friendly gathering, half of whom were (believe it or not) non-LJers, although one confessed to starting his own blog. Just not on LJ. We had a sporadic conversation about "favorite words." Sporadic conversation meaning every once in a while, someone would come up with a new favorite word--"poppycock", "persnickity"--and interrupt the current topic.

Saturday a wonderful lunch with radcliffe. Very nice to see her again. Had a nice time at _mac_ and stuology's party, but as always, I went home before the fun started. Sunday, got lots of sewing done for Cairo on the Kaw. I will not allow myself to get into this situation if I do this show next year. I don't mind sewing nearly all the costumes, but I'm not going to do it with less than a month before the show. No. I've had no time to practice the choreographies. Sucks. At least I already knew (mostly) the finale number or I would be screwed.

Hopefully just a few more hours of work on those costumes. After the show (I am counting the hours until Sunday evening, believe me), I can start working on RenFest costumes. I want at least 2 different whore outfits (I know from past experience I can't stand to put on the outfit I wore the previous day--shudder) and 2 different bellydance outfits. Three bellydance outfits if I want to have a standby in case of a rain day. Heads-up: I might need some help fitting the muslin for my bodice. I know radcliffe has zero time, but if anyone else has experience with this sort of thing? I have no idea what I'm doing here and would very much appreciate some guidance.

Margaret Cho and I agree on the Martha Stewart BS. Thanks to shrijani for the link. Actually, no. Hm. After a careful re-reading, there's a lot in there that I don't agree with. I kinda got swept away with the first paragraph and didn't read through to the end as well as I should have. Let's say I agree with parts. But I don't think Martha Stewart is a political prisoner.

UPDATE: Two. More. Hours. Is it any wonder that I'm ready to throw myself off a bridge when I get to hear this song at least twice a day?

Margaret Cho rocks! While I agree with what she says, I am thankful that it is only five months - I would've been devastated if it had been for the years they previously discussed.

I worked for many, many years in the Legal Department of a publically traded company. For a while, one of the things I worked on was the documentation for SEC filings and the documentation for employee stock options.

There is no forgiveness in the world when it comes to stock related fraud, particularly insider trading.

Martha got off very, very easy, particularly in that she was not charged with insider trading (which would have netted her a truly serious sentence), but the lying to prosecutors charge. That her dodge was the flimsiest of excuses (there are not oral instructions for "sell at a number" orders...everything is documented in a brokerage, specifically to cover everyone's ass legally), and she had been a stockbroker earlier in her life (which made it absolutely impossible for her to "not know it was illegal"), was what bought her the farm...not that she was a woman, a successful woman or anything else.

Much worse sentences happen to regular people who do exactly what she did. I don't hate her by any means, she's just a business person who did something not only incredibly stupid, but something she knew better than to do, and she got caught.

The reason she was given home detention had everything to do with not wanting to egregiously spend taxpayer monies. No extra security for a celebrity who some women in prison might actually want to harm. And for her...I don't know if phone or computer access is actually cut off for those in home detention (they can only not go past a certain perimeter), so it would seem to me, if she had phone and computer access, she's still able to conduct business with impunity...while taking a slightly unpleasant vacation.

Just my opinion, of course.

I would like to note that I disagree with the political prisoner angle that Cho closes with. I think that is a slap in the face and makes light of actual political prisoners. I do agree with her stand that our prison system (not to mention the judicial system) is very messed up.

I would say a significant portion of the problems with the prison system have much to do with what is proscecuted and how in this country.

How many crimes would be eliminated by proper legalization of controlled substances (and hence how many people wouldn't be in prison)? How many people are doing ugly time based on the differences between sentencing for crack vs. powder cocaine.

But then, hey, I'm a raving liberal.

Yup yup. After working for a couple years as the admitting nurse for the Indiana state women's prison, my mom changed many of her views regarding decriminalization and mandatory sentencing (and reinforced many of mine).

Let's hear it for the raving liberals! Wooo! =D
