Still talking about food

My instinct about not adding fruit back into my diet was right. I made some applesauce because I was starting to worry about the exceptionally low levels of carbs I'm getting and...it really didn't sit right yesterday. I felt better when I ate the applesauce with some food (I mixed it with the pureed spinach to help get down the spinach on Monday). But on its own, even after I finished my meat and pureed squash? Not so much. I don't think I'm particularly sensitive to fructose, but after so long with hardly any sugars at all (the most sugary thing I'm eating is the grape juice jello), it was too much. I need to get more carbs, though. I'd like to try some strawberry soup, but I'm leery of all those little seeds. So maybe...banana soup? Too bad blueberries aren't an option.

At this point I'm honestly not sure if I'm continuing the pureed food thing mostly out of simple convenience. With [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick not eating at home during the CSSF summer workshops, it's easy to keep eating like this (my trips to the grocery store are quick and simple), and I have to say my gut really does feel better.

People always asked me "doesn't it hurt?" when they saw my swollen post-meal belly. And I (honestly) answered that it didn't. I mean, it wasn't comfortable that my clothes bit into my skin and it didn't feel good to be squashed into a pair of jeans that fit thirty minutes ago, but it didn't hurt. Like, on the inside. It didn't hurt. But I think that was acclimation talking. Because after I ate that solid food last week, my stomach did hurt. And now, post-meal, my mind registers a notable lack of discomfort, even if I am still a little bit swollen externally. So yeah, maybe this horrible experience is actually doing my innards some good and allowing them to heal.

That's nice. It's nice to think I'm not in Food Jail (thanks to Melissa Joulwan for that term) for no reason.

Next up on the intro list (today): zucchini. And then garlic! NGL, I'm pretty excited about roasted garlic puree. That's gonna make my meatballs a lot more palatable. Also, avocados are on the horizon and while I don't like avocados, they'll be a good way to get more fat and carbs in me. And at this point I can make myself eat just about anything. Also, I don't have to cook avocado. Major bonus points.

ETA: Hm. This is the first day in well over a week that the afternoon has rolled around and I haven't been gasping for a nap. Was it the carbs from the applesauce? The extra-large helping of meat for dinner last night? Sunspots?

Draco bbq'd me half an avocado the other day. Rich and tasty. I had no idea that avocado could be bbq'd.

I'm super excited about you getting to eat garlic too.

It that sad?
Really - this whole thing....it's just....
It sucks.

IF IT IS SAD THEN WE ARE TOGETHER IN OUR SADNESS.

Actually, I'm kind of curious about this garlic puree business....says the girl who'll eat a whole roasted bulb on a whim.

I KNOW. Man, roasted garlic is so good. I'm going to add dollops of it to the pureed zucchini, and definitely mix it in with the meatballs. Perhaps spread it on a skinless, roasted chicken thigh or fish fillet?

Garlic! Man, garlic makes everything so much better. Yay for garlic!

Things sound pretty hopeful. *hugs*

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-06-18 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree! GARLIC FOOD OF THE GODS.

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2014-06-18 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you like cold? Because bananas are the one ingredient in One Ingredient Ice Cream.

Oh man frozen bananas are THE BOMB. NOM NOM NOM.

[identity profile] sherwood21.livejournal.com 2014-06-18 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmmmm, roasted garlic is delishus. That sounds like an awesome addition to your diet to look forward to. And I'm so glad to hear that this may be helping and you're not putting yourself in food jail for nothing! (That is a great phase. So maybe this is just more like food parole.)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-06-19 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I think this is definitely Food Jail. Parole will be when I can start eating limited solid foods again.

[identity profile] sherwood21.livejournal.com 2014-06-19 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I will testify for you in front of the Food Parole Hearing Board, with character references and pie charts.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA PIE CHARTS.

FUCKING D-Y-I-N-G

You're welcome. :p

Here's to feeling better by whatever means necessary. Roasted garlic puree is delicious even if you're not in Food Juvie. I prepared a recipe the other day that call for crushing garlic cloves and sauteeing them until brown, then removing them from the oil. Well I couldn't let all that crispy garlic goodness go to waste! So I put them in with some cold green beans and ate them as a snack. Nom nom!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-06-19 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
THAT SOUNDS DELICIOUS

[identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com 2014-06-19 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
hey you know, you could strain the strawberry soup. I use this fabric bag for squeezing my nut milk, I bet it would work great for that soup!
here 'tis. (http://www.therawfoodworld.com/extra-large-nut-milk-bag-square-shaped-pi1001684)

Thank you!!!!

Yay AVOS! Nature's mayo! although, the roasty garlicy chicken thighs sound delish as well.
Baked avo is yummy, but BBQ? Oh man. Must Try.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-06-19 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Lemme know when you try it!

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2014-06-19 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I will. If I can have one last long enough to do it.. heh.

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2014-06-19 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The idea of banana soup made me want to retch, but I can confirm that the banana soft serve if yum. I'm wondering if a cooked fruit compote might be good on top of or blended into the meatballs?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-06-19 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds delicious. Sweet/savory combos are one of my faves. I looked in the Phase 3 food options and peaches top the list, so you know I'll be trying that as soon as possible.

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2014-06-19 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I want to try it!
