Accentuate the Not Entirely Dismal, day 4

Oh, Kristen Stewart, I will defend you to the death.

Tumblr post of that gifset here if you wanna reblog it.

I've planned to leave my body to science for a while now, but I also like the idea of being left to rot. This option provides a lovely compromise/combination.

A recent study shows that more protein plus fewer calories can lead to fat loss with minimal muscle degradation. Gotta include potassium supplementation to avoid calcium loss, though. Since I'm having such a difficult time keeping my weight down, thanks to lack of strenuous activities, I'm going to give this a try. Which means food-logging. Which ugh. But I'm tired of not fitting into the larger clothes I bought just last month for godssakes. This shit needs to stop. Before anyone pipes in with "But you don't need to lose weight!" or "Don't put yourself in starvation mode!" Let me assure you, I know from experience how much the stress of weighing more than ~160lbs puts on my body (a lot) and I know from experience and medical testing my minimum caloric needs.

Lastly: During the next five days, post three positive things about your day and ask three people to do the same so the positive attitude can gain some ground.

1. I slept really well last night. I almost felt rested when I woke, and by mid-morning I was practically bouncy!

2. Today's weather allowed me to wear one of the lightweight wraps I bought during one of my recent thrift-store splurges.

3. One more wake-up until the weekend.

That article about sky burial is making my heart go all squeezy today. Thanks for the unexpected bittersweet-ness of it all. What a magnificent job that writer did.

You're welcome. I saw it on today's Toast Link Round-Up (http://the-toast.net/2014/09/11/link-roundup-174/).

That article was absolutely fascinating!

Hooray for the good things, especially #1! I slept really well last night too - it felt amazing!

Sleep is just so important and I always just roll my eyes at the people who push and push and push their bodies and say things like "I'll sleep when I'm dead" and then don't understand why they feel like crap all the time and can't do everything they want to do because they're fucking exhausted. It's one thing to push yourself because otherwise you'll lose your house. It's something else entirely to push yourself because you think it's some badass badge of honor.

OMG true story! You will never see me pushing myself just to push myself. I give my kid grief for doing it all the time. And I really regret all those naptimes that I complained about!

I'm one of those people sometimes. I'd been trying to change it a bit, and ever since I started making the tiny human I've HAD to change that mindset completely. It's an interesting shift.

Go (to sleep), you! =D

Body farms are definitely an interesting alternative. I figure cremation and get past it, but I won't be here to do more than leave a written request. It's always up to whoever has to cope.

I admit I am unreasonably fond of the term "body farm," too.

[identity profile] abrae.livejournal.com 2014-09-11 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I've wanted to do the body farm thing every since I heard of it.

There are actually a wider scope of things encompassed within donating one's body to science than most people think about. "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" by Mary Roach might interest you.

That's an amazing article. Thanks for posting the link!

You're welcome! Damn, I love The Toast.

A few years ago (maybe it was ten?!), there was an environmental problem in Mumbai that caused a reduction in the vulture population. Turns out they were laying eggs with too thin a shell. Anyway, one of the consequences was that the bodies within the Dakhmas (towers of silence) were too numerous for the reduced vulture population to handle. It was a serious crisis for the Parsi/Zoroastrian populace because they won't pollute the earth (burial), water (sinking in water), or fire (cremation) with a corpse.

I am fascinated by the myriad ways in which people individually, and cultures on a larger scale, address the issue of a living person becoming something else.

OoooOO! Thank you!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-09-11 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That is AMAZING and FASCINATING and SO SO SAD.

You can donate your body to science and then request it be cremated after, which is my plan.

That article was amazing!

So glad you enjoyed it!

This is all such cool stuff! Holy cow, that sky burial thing! Hm. We need that in NE Kansas, with such a different climate....

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-09-12 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Do we have a large enough vulture population?

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2014-09-12 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
We'd certainly help increase their numbers....
