Out like a lamp

Breaking Muscle posted a wonderful article on healthy yoga practice. So much of yoga, real yoga, is the mentality, the breath, the mindfulness we bring to our practice. The importance of being comfortable in a posture is why it takes me about twice or sometimes three times as long to go through a series of poses with someone who is new to yoga. I spend a lot of time making sure they feel good and safe in each and every pose--including savasana! In my own personal practice, I know when and where I need supportive tools so if I need a block or a strap (and that varies from day to day), I know immediately to grab one and how to use it correctly. There's a lot more to yoga than stretching into poses.

Speaking of, I had a very nice yoga session last night. It'd been a week! Felt good.

What didn't feel good were the bizarre and way out of cycle uterine cramping and small spotting that hit about 7pm, followed the intense stomach pains that kept me awake from 2:00 to 4:00am. I'm still getting stomach spasms, and I'm afraid to eat anything even though I'm pretty hungry.

What the fuck, body.

Today's Tumblr is Tuesday, March 31: Birds.

I like that yoga article! It's very reassuring.

Oh, I'm so happy you found it so!

I want to help people understand that yoga isn't about superficially fit people in tight pants, bending their bodies into seemingly uncomfortable shapes. The vast majority of yoga is internal, and the internal health one achieves from yoga practice is what eventually comes out in visible measures of "fitness."

I think that fitness attitudes are definitely moving well away from the "no pain, no gain" attitude, but there's still a definite expectation that the 'best' way to be fit is to push hard and be sore afterwards. Being kind to your body is a much nicer mentality.

Also, I went and looked at the birds collection. They are all lovely and/or adorable, but the one with the little flower hat KILLED me.

Oh this this thisthisthis! :) I love that article too.

Boo on the body rebellion. That must have been miserable.

Oh, you poor thing. Sucks ass to have to work and pretend your insides aren't stabbing you with rusty scissors. :(

At least eating lunch didn't make things worse.

I told [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick last night that if I didn't have 30+ years of experience with menstrual cramps, I would have been inclined to go to the emergency room. They were pretty bad. I've never had my uterus and stomach rebel at the same time--at least not that I remember. Sucked ass, indeed.

What the hell is going with your uterus?? I am so sorry it's continuing to give you troubles.

Also, thanks for sharing that yoga article. I'm sending it to Brian because he needs to read it as well.

For real. I'm going to talk to my doctor about it when I see him on Friday. I've been having mid-cycle spotting every once in a while, but never cramps like that.

Hurray for helpful articles! Yoga is so incredibly misunderstood in our culture. Stupid Americans.
