Move it on over

I used to be blonde ponytail girl. I'm glad to say I'm dark short haired girl, now. GROWTH.

Tom Hiddleston tweeted the first clip from I Saw the Light. Oh my god you guys this movie's gonna kill me. He sounds so much like him.

[livejournal.com profile] mckitterick doesn't like country music (to the point that he claims Johnny Cash isn't a country singer because he likes Johnny Cash but doesn't like country music, therefore Johnny Cash isn't a country singer to which I think most of us will call bullshit but it's okay whatever moving on) and sometimes that makes me a little sad because I really like country music. I even like some modern pop country. All genres of music have a lot of crap, but man, that swing and twang? SO GOOD. sigh

I'm glad I can count on [livejournal.com profile] redheadfae going to see this with me. If [livejournal.com profile] msmitti can make it to town for a visit when it's playing, that'd be wonderful. hint hint It opens the Friday of Thanksgiving weekend, ladies.

I look at a lot of refashioned/recycled clothes designs. A lot of them. And 99% of the time, I firmly believe there is nothing you can do with old ties that doesn't look like a bunch of old ties thrown together. Horrible. But check these out. A jacket (what makes this succeed IMO is the interrupted lines--it's not just horizontal lines that screams I AM MADE OF TIES), an ottoman, and (my least favorite, but still kind of pretty) a rug.

Oh my god. You've put your finger on a thing that broadly but pretty darn well separates the country music I like from the country music I don't like, and that's swing. It's not entirely accurate because I like some rock/pop-based country (does it get more adorable than Mind Your Own Biscuits?), but the Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams--they're all singing swing.

And I have been squeeing over this movie since about five minutes after the first casting announcement when I realized how much THiddles looks like HWills. I really hope the film does justice the tragedy of his all-too-short life. Focusing on the highs would be a disservice, I think. I wonder if THiddles is going to break peoples' brains when they realize he isn't American the way Hugh Laurie did in House?

In re: could/couldn't care less, I roll my eyes when someone gets pedantic about it, because the context makes it clear that those who say "could care less" are being facetious. XCKD says it much more elegantly than I can, though.

Kacey Musgraves is fantastic. I also maintain that country music has always had the best lyricists. So incredibly clever and funny and heartbreaking, often all in the same song and that is talent.

If you like that swing sound (Bakersfield sound, especially), check out 90s-era Derailers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Derailers). I didn't like either of their post-90s albums that they released under Lucky Dog records, though, and I haven't followed them since. But Jackpot, Reverb Deluxe, and Full Western Dress are all amazing.

I really love the song "Neon Light" by Blake Shelton. And "Rum" by Brothers Osborne. So there's me caught out.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-09-11 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd never heard of Brothers Osborne and as the video started I thought oh dear this is going to be a little too bluegrassy for me but then he started singing and I was all YEAH BUDDY.

I am all about I Saw The Light! I like some country music, but I grew up listening to the Highwaymen, so Johnny Cash holds a special place in my heart.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-09-11 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think if Johnny Cash doesn't hold a special place in your heart, there's something wrong with you or you've lead a very musically sheltered existence.

[identity profile] 1-rhiannon-1.livejournal.com 2015-09-11 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I can definitely agree with that!

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2015-09-12 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
PREACH!

ZOMG! I didn't even know that movie was a thing.

re: ties
Things always look like they are made of ties. Do you think it is because of the fabric choices? Seems like you could cut them into strips that aren't tie shaped and it would still look like a bunch of ties.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-09-11 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's totally the fabrics and the patterns. Most ties are just fucking ugly. Personally, I won't wear a tie made more recently than 1965. I mean, for one, they're just too wide for me, but also, they're just...pretty awful.

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2015-09-11 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)

Between that, Crimson Peak, and a reshowing of Coriolanus? This fall was custom made for me.

I am going to see ISTL with friends to check out his singing before I make my country music fan parents go.

And, have you seen Hank III's dumbass comments about TH's casting? Ok Hank, we know you look and sing JUST LIKE your granddaddy but you were not going to be cast, and they picked someone who can really do it. so shut the hell up and get over it.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-09-11 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, Hank III can STFU about...everything? I loved his first album, but I saw him live and JFC that guy has a chip on his shoulder and a stick up his ass the sizes of which are staggering.

Tom's singing (and guitar playing) are phenomenal. Check them out in the linked clip, above!

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2015-09-11 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)

I saw it! I'm feeling pretty good about his performance, but bio pics can always be touchy.

Seriously, I saw him too and he can be amazing but also makes me want to tape his mouth shut.

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2015-09-11 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I admit that every once in a while I like me some outlaw country. Not often, but sometimes, yeah. And I love Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn. :) I'm excited for the film!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-09-11 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Someday when you're in the mood, give Charline Arthur (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charline_Arthur) a listen. She's amazing. Her voice might not be everyone's cuppa (personally, I love it), but damn she was an incredible personality.

OMG, that's fantastic! BRB off to find more of her stuff!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-09-11 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The Bear Family compilation (https://www.bear-family.com/arthur-charline-welcome-to-the-club.html) is pretty much agreed to be the definitive collection of her stuff if you want a quick one-stop shop.

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2015-09-11 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent! Thank you very much, always a treat to find new-to-me great music. :D

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-09-11 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
If you decide to order from Bear Family (instead of looking for it used someplace like eBay), you might also check out their first Collins Kids collection (https://www.bear-family.com/collins-kids-the-rockin-est.html).

I was incredibly fortunate to see them live in, like...2001? I stood right at the front and just cried. It was fucking magical.

Bakersfield?

[identity profile] thetimesink.livejournal.com 2015-09-11 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Bakersfield???

Seriously. 102 miles up Highway 99!

Yeah, that's probably a song title.

So, Paramore's concert when they were here last year; but back in the day? Asleep at the Wheel came to town and the memories are just fine.

Oh and: Stray Cats, just to keep the discussion moving...

Re: Bakersfield?

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2015-09-12 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Please look up the "Bakersfield sound".. yes!

Of course, we all know the jokes .. shortest, quietest war was when the Okies took over California..meaning Bakersfield. :)

Stray Cats are not twang, but they were good for their sound.
Where exactly, do you live? I spent a few years in SoCal, mostly in the IE.

And for CM, I'm still blond ponytail gal, in a way. Because, dammit, learn English. And yet, my "language evolves" side sees the point here.

Re: Bakersfield?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-09-12 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I use waaaay too much internet speak and slang to get on any high horses about casual discourse. I think there's a time and place for both.

Re: Bakersfield?

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2015-09-12 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I admit to being awful at times about how much I love getting on my high horse. I'll lay the ears back and ride that sucker to death. It's a character flaw, I know.

But, yeh, time and place. Mostly I just cringe inside and consider the sources. I don't believe most people who say "could care less" are being facetious, they are just repeating the way they've always heard it.

PS I think I'm going to just spend this morning listening to all the great music on this thread! What a treasure. Thank you.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-09-12 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't thing they're being facetious, either, but I just don't have the energy to care about Correct Language anymore. I gotta pick my battles. =D

YAY MUSIC!

ETA: Ha!!! this just came across my Tumblr dash (http://calystarose.tumblr.com/post/128912732669/i-fought-space-the-next-time-somebody).

Oh man. haha.

Forget that singer I just mentioned. That one song was about it. The other album I listened to had him sounding too much like Dylan and his voice is like nails on chalkboard to me. Moving on.... :)

ETA: apparently that comment didn't post Yay LJ.
I'm giving a listen to Jason Isbell now. Great lyrics. I had to look him up when I read one of his lines in a review: "working for the county keeps me pissing clear"

so funny!!! one of the reasons I commonly give for not enjoying my teaching gig out in the suburbs is that there are too many "blonde ponytail girls." everybody knows exactly what I mean.

enjoyed all those tie concoctions!!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-09-13 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I always feel so bad for all the ugly ties in thrift stores. I'm glad at least a few people found good ways to use them.
