Found via [personal profile] bonibaru [personal profile] lilly_the_kid is asking for vids that convinced you to watch a show. Go pitch your recruitment vids!

I find a lot of new music via fanvids, and I'd love to know what bands/albums/songs others discovered thanks to fanvids. Please share your music finds, as well as (if you remember) what vid used it. Or, you know, if you've got a killer song for a character-themed playlist, I'm certainly not gonna turn that down.

For anyone interested, I have a ton of playlists on YouTube (including one just for Angst) and I recently duplicated my Guardian playlists on Spotify. All the Guardian-related playlists except the 5/20 and 6/13 celebration ones are continual works in progress. If you like the stuff in those, you might check back every month or so to check for updates.

Found a new song to add to Deconstruction writing playlist this morning! Really love me my Music Feels, y'all.

I spaced linking to the Dump yesterday, so here it is.

Trying to ignore the fact that we might be at war with Iran now? idk, I can't deal with that until I'm in my own home again, and that's only an hour away, so I'll start reading the news then.

Twitter:
A thread of Weilan derivatives
Fairyland Lovers/Guardian mashup
RPF twitfic hell* from bowlerrootx sweet jesus tell me they're not stopping at just three entries
Well over half these Bai Yu’s “???????” moments posts show as unavailable to me but I think that's Twitter still fucking up and maybe some of y'all can see them.
I literally whispered (because I'm still at someone else's house and they're sleeping) FUCK YOU at this tweet.

*For those who share my sad general RPF aversion, this is another one of those stories where it's pretty much just the names and faces, not so much the actual actors

Not Guardian:
Why have I not been following jsmooth on Twitter? (answer: I am so very bad at Twitter--I'm trying, y'all)
How LED lightbulbs, underexposed photos and colonialism suggest an explanation for the Fermi paradox. Very long but very interesting.

Added another song to my Weilan playlist on YouTube. Beware Knives.

[personal profile] stultiloquentia posted an amazing and comprehensive pitch post for The Untamed if you're waffling.

Does anyone else get an additional burst of joy from kudos left by guests? Like, you don't even have an account, but you read my fic and liked it enough to tell me? That's awesome.

Speaking of fic, guess who's writing in History 3: Trapped, now? Fewer than 500 words in and I've already made myself laugh out loud (literally) twice. Thanks for forming that comm, [personal profile] doctorskuld!

This Twitter thread about why people love Guardian is such a heartwarming read.
Zhu Yilong and Bai Yu as various animals.
Zhu Yilong with that knee-weakening ponytail, playing piano god damn it.
Beautiful and ouch. The likenesses in this are amazing.

Sorta-Guardian related? How to make congee.

I'm beyond ready to start writing Canadian Shack. I actually have a title for it already \o/ but I'm worried it'll make people nervous. It's gonna be a much lighter tale than Ghost Story, though, promise! Well, as light as my stories get, I suppose...

The only new stuff I put to paper this week were additions to Ghost Story that either: don't make any sense out of context, or are huge spoilers. So in lieu of writing content I'm posting links the Guardian character music mixes I've been collecting for a while. I waited until I had at least ten songs for each to make them public (Zhao Yunlan is tricky for me to find songs for--probably the lesser angst quotient). I'll continue adding to them all as I come across appropriate songs, so these will be constant works in progress.

Weilan
Shen Wei
Zhao Yunlan (sorry not sorry for the first song y'all, I couldn't not)
Ye Zun

All the songs from my 5/20 and 6/13 mixes appear in one of those playmixes. I'm not sure how much longer I'll keep those since I rarely listen to them myself anymore BUT! if someone still listens to them, let me know. I won't be hurt at all if you make your own mix based off them, either.

I wish there were a better way to organize playlists on YouTube. I'd like to separate out my fanvid playlists from my music mixes. Someday I need to figure out why Spotify won't let me log in with anything other than my FB account. Or just start a new account, I suppose.

Here's all my public playlists on YouTube, if anyone's interested.

ETA: Forgot to mention I got my hair done by a new stylist yesterday! Pic in comments.

From Twitter:

I'm serious about those frames. If anyone finds them (or something nearly identical) please send me a link. I'm willing to pay a lot for glasses that look good on me and I think those would fit my face really well.

Ramping up the angst again on Ghost Story. (Sorry, y'all, it's gonna be a rough ride from here on out. Still some sexy times, but to use an expression I've seen bandied about quite a bit in this fandom, the rest is pretty much knives all the way down.) So I've been going through my music collection and remembered the rough times I got through thanks to the help of Sugar's 1992 Oh jesus, y'all I bought this CD, with my own money, when it came out, in nineteen fucking ninety-two anywayyyyy, 1992 album Copper Blue and whooo buddy if this isn't a Weilan song. Full lyrics on Genius.

All the things I haven't seen
Once the final curtain has been raised
The act we act is wearing thin
The act we act under my skin
The words the words we said goodbye
The words left choking in my mind
The act we act is wearing thin
I think we wear it out again

Time to start writing some ouch! *cracks knuckles*

Oh! Heads-up, tomorrow's another Guardian collection on my Tumblr because this fandom's prolific as fuck. Stuff's queued to post every hour from 10am to 2pm CST.

I also saw this Multifandom Secret Virgin Ficfest advertised on Twitter via [personal profile] bonibaru and I'm tempted. Very, very tempted. No way will I be done with Ghost Story by the deadline, but I'm feeling sloggy and blah about where I am with it and it's a daily fuckin' struggle to hit my word count goal right now. Maybe I need a palate cleanser before heading into the home stretch? Idk, idk, something to think about for a couple days. The original announcement led to confusion if this was limited to K-pop fic and it looks like they say it isn't, even though it definitely sounds like it is in the AO3 description. Is anyone else writing for this? ( [personal profile] naye , please tell Dr. Skuld I will read the virgin!Jack fic so hard.)

Card-making was delayed because my gesso was all dried up. Guess that's what happens when you prep a whole bunch of card bases at once and don't use your gesso for over a year. It seemed like such a good idea at the time! So that was a trip to Michael's and nearly $30 because they no longer sell small bottles of gesso. sigh

Last night I saw The HU at a local venue and it was so good. SO GOOD. 1. Metal fans are great. I wish I liked more metal music bc they're all just so damn polite. 2. At several points in the show, I closed my eyes to absorb the sound in my ears, in my chest, and it was like a physical touch--something I've been very much lacking of late. Damn, I love loud music. 3. I highly recommend Etymotic earplugs. I have the first incarnation of their basic version and they are worth every penny. I would like to assume the next generation is the same or better (and who knows, those might be), but as I learned yesterday, this is not always the case.

Because in absolutely heartbreaking news, the new Diva Dolphin arrived yesterday and...I hate it. It's smaller than the old model, the silicone feels (very) different, and I don't like the vibration style. It doesn't even use the same size batteries (which I wish I'd realized before purchasing--that would've been a clue). So yeah, I spent $90 on this thing that I'm never ever going to use and of course sex toy stores never take returns. Y'all, I seriously almost cried. I'm back at square one, I guess, only with less money. sigh

Anyone want a brand-new vibrator that I'm sure will work just fine for someone less picky?

I'm getting my hair trimmed this morning and will see if having my hair straightened (which only happens when I get it cut because I am lazy as hell and dgaf) cheers me up a little bit. I just want a god damn power-assisted orgasm, y'all. My hands are getting tired.

I'm not totally convinced this qualifies as a hidden gem, but this fanvid was posted on Tumblr back in August--which isn't that long ago! But it has only six notes, possibly because the song is (I think?) in Russian. The melody seemed oddly upbeat at first, but it really works with the timing/editing, and about thirty seconds in, I was sold. It does a good job of tracking emotional arcs and throws in some nice icy knife punches with the way it uses flashbacks. Not spoiler-free by a longshot.

I've got one more square on my Bingo card before I'm left with nothing but Hallows squares. \o/

Someone (not on DW) who obviously knows and love me sent me this yesterday. Anthony Ramos (the original Laurens in Hamilton) bringing the female gaze to music and videos, y'all. It's a good thing I've given up fighting my desire to nail these incredibly, outrageously young men right Into The Fucking Floor. I'm just not even ashamed anymore. Who cares. Not me!

Here's a piece of The Sex Scene That Nearly Killed Me (or at least nearly killed my desire to continue writing, ugh).
Click for it )

Gonna start the next scene this morning (where significantly less pleasant stuff happens to our intrepid heroes). Wish us all luck.

I am highly motivated by music and also a very organizationally-inclined person. This explains the cough thirty-eight playlists on my YouTube channel (most of those are fanvid playlists tho). If anyone's interested in checking out what I listen to when I'm writing my smutty-smut, here you go.

This is the last Friday of September and I am not okay with that. I am not ready for winter, or the 2020 U.S. election season. /o\

Spent some time this morning clearing out space under the downstairs bathroom counter for the litterbox that's gotta go there because I agreed to foster my beloved SDCC travel partner Robin's kitty until she finds a permanent home. ughhhhh Only for Robin let me tell you.

First couple's counseling session (on Tuesday) went well. Second appointment is 10/8.

I've made it to the gym every other day for two weeks! Only felt crappy afterward one day, and I'm pretty sure that was because I didn't get enough sleep and shouldn't have gone. So next week I start going every day (unless it's a day I didn't get at least six hours of sleep). Huzzah for my teeny little baby steps of intentional movement.

Listened to this song pretty much on loop yesterday while writing most of ANGST WEEK.

Hey, hold on to me
Don't say it's the end of me
I'm right here, I'm ready
I need this love.

The whole album (Eclipse, by Twin Shadow) has been most of my soundtrack for Ghost Story. Thanks so much to [personal profile] no_detective  for alerting me to his music. I told [personal profile] kazoogrrl that getting through ANGST WEEK (although it only wound up being about three days of story time) was the writing equivalent of watching something through one's fingers. Even I was upset with ZYL for his questionable life choices! And I wrote them! Still chugging along at ~1k/day. I could have this fic written (although not quite ready to post) by mid-November. Which would be gr8 because I'm so incredibly ready to start writing something from Shen Wei's POV again.

I have no idea what's actually supposed to be happening in this fanvid (could be seen as Weilan AU or Zhubai RPF) but I choose to see it as them being serial killers in love and I kind of love it.

[personal profile] qikiqtarjuaq posted on Twitter about this woman's amazing make-up skills. Are. You. Kidding. Me. Watch at your own risk because ngl, the lip-lick and widened eye just about killed me.

This person recently followed me on Tumblr and I'm just... ? What? Why? He doesn't seem to be a bot, but I'm flummoxed what in the world he saw on my Tumblr that made him go "Oh, sure, I'll follow her, she posts lots of stuff relevant to my overt, overwhelming love of God and Jesus!" Maybe he thinks I need saved? IDK. Very weird.

Got more than 5k words on Ghost Story written this week. I'm wondering if I'll wind up calling it "Ghost Story" after all. I had planned to name it "Write What You Know," but when I came up with that (brilliant) title I'd planned for ZYL's creative writing project to take a much larger focus of the story. Not only did I wind up nixing the creative portion of his dissertation, I eliminated pretty much all of the on-campus and/or coursework-related plot points from the story. *emoji shrug*

On the reading front, I finally got to Bespoken For last night and it's just, ah... *chef's kiss* 10/10 definitely recommend.

Am listening to [personal profile] no_detective 's most recent Guardian playlist this morning while I work on Ghost Story. Had a bit of a laugh when I recognized a BTS song in the first three notes--it's such a FEELS SONG, so ofc it's one of my faves of theirs. And then right on the heels of it was Taylor Swift's "The Archer" off her new album which--oooof, so good. Angsty songs really are her wheelhouse and I wish she'd explore more varied avenues of those themes instead of going into the tough, angry, revenge stuff which just does not work for me (from her, anyway).

Speaking of music, The HU's album dropped early (!) and I got to pick it up at my local record store this morning. Looking forward to listening to that, but I definitely want to experience that on the big speakers first, so that'll have to wait until I'm alone in the house...

ETA: Writing today has been an exercise in painful tooth-pulling. Fuck it, I'm inserting a pointless jerk-off scene just to get something on the goddamn page.

This week's dump on cm.net.

In other news, I can't believe I'm making another Weilan playlist (I totally believe I'm making another Guardian playlist). But I picked up this album last week before leaving town and this morning was the first time I got to listen to to it and...well. After reading [personal profile] xparrot 's Deep Waters Closing Over Our Heads yesterday on the plane? *cough* Yes. Well.

Everything is still All Guardian All The Time.

Lyrics: )
clevermanka: default (Default)
Woke up at 2am. Couldn't fall back asleep, so got up a bit before 3a. It's getting on to 7a, so I'm pretty sure I'm up for the day. Yay. I've got a ton to do today, too. Grocery store, library, laundry, just enough food prep to get us through the next three days (we're both traveling next week and I don't want stuff sitting in the fridge)...ugh.

Tomorrow might be rough. And then I leave for Indianapolis on Sunday. HA HA HA HA *thud*

At least waking so early gave me plenty of time to do a final pass over my first draft of the First Time fic. Sent it to beta a couple hours ago. My second fic! What a world, what a world. Now I just need to start my third watch of Guardian before digging into the Ghost Story. This time I'll be watching with [personal profile] solo 's subtitles and am Very Excited About That. It'll be [personal profile] mckitterick 's second time watching and I'm excited to hear what he thinks. I got so much out of my first re-watch.

I linked to BTS's "Airplane pt. 2" music video in yesterday's dump (and yes, I did watch it again just now since I obviously had to grab the URL for the link WHAT EXACTLY IS YOUR POINT) and in the comments on cm.net [personal profile] kazoogrrl mentioned the MV for Blood Sweat & Tears. Since our tastes align like 90% of the time, I of course checked it out immediately and...um, yeah. It's a lot. Dear lord. Just when you think it's reached Peak Hotness (for me, 1:09 with the swing and again at 1:20 with the swing) it keeps on giving more and more (fingers in mouths! blowing smoke! fucking blindfolds! the...kissing?) until you're left with nothing but your own id and a white flag.

Honestly I'm not entirely sure what is the narrative, but I am HERE FOR IT.

clevermanka: default (Default)
Okay, who told me about the band Hidden Citizens? Was it someone here? I want to thank you because they are the-bomb-dot-com. Angsty, emo hard rock anthems are my jam and angsty, emo hard rock anthem cover songsFUCKING SOLD.

Am about 1k words into the next Guardian fic. I wanted to get something down before I left for Con*Strict, so that's a relief. Had a hard time getting started because my brain can be annoyingly linear and I couldn't write the parts I knew were going to happen (the sex) before I wrote the things I didn't (the build-up/UST). As I mentioned in a comment to [personal profile] naye , apparently my writing needs adequate foreplay. [personal profile] mckitterick talked with me a bit (so convenient, having a live-in writing instructor) and something, not sure what, sparked an insight for that first, crucial paragraph. Thanks, my dude.

Finally watched Good Omens and enjoyed it very much! I can appreciate David Tennant and Michael Sheen's performances while still mourning the loss of less-white casting. Can't lie, their chemistry is fantastic and sorry not sorry those characters are so in love. I thought the middle two episodes dragged a bit, but not enough to stop watching. The scriptwriters did a good (and necessary) reworking of Shadwell's character but I was disappointed how they (visually) cleaned up Madame Tracy's character at the end. Was that in the book? I don't remember, but even if it was, I could've done without it.

It's been a long time since I read it and [personal profile] mckitterick never read it at all so that's the next read-aloud project. The two other books I've read to him are Jitterbug Perfume (problematic but I love the language of it) and Little, Big (best. novel. ever.). I assured him I am not going to attempt any accents.

ETA: speaking of Good Omens, I almost forgot to share that this happened on Tumblr. [personal profile] naye, have you seen that? When fandoms collide.

In Health Shit, I'm back to sucking up 60cc of ozone. *knocks wood* After today's session I have three weeks off since my schedule conflicts with the clinic's during vacation time of year. It'll be helpful to track how I feel with that much time off. Am still weirdly uninterested in food which will probably serve me well while traveling so not complaining.

Motivating myself to do food prep so [personal profile] mckitterick doesn't starve while I'm gone is difficult when I just want to write or art. It's such a fucking pleasure to do things for fun again.

Looks like in addition to the songs I'm (still) accumulating for Guardian, I'm collecting for a History 3: Trapped playlist now.

clevermanka: default (Default)
I've been finding more songs that feel very Guardian to me. Since today is the one-year anniversary of the show's premiere on Youku, I figured I'd post it now. Some of these are more, idk, meta? than they are appropriate to any characters (Personal Jesus, Secret World), and Dessa's could be applied to a lot of OTPs (although the line about the locket hit home). Not thrilled about putting an artist in twice on such a short playlist, but both SVRCINA songs are perfect and I just heard of her so... there you go. This is an even angstier mix than the previous one. Happy(?) listening.

1. GOOD FOR YOU- Dessa
i'm here with fog in my locket
your name in my teeth

youtube

2. WHO ARE YOU- SVRCINA
you're not such an easy target
one minute i know you then i don't

youtube

3. PERSONAL JESUS- Depeche Mode
i will deliver
you know I'm a forgiver

youtube

4. HORIZONS- Puscifer
dust devil swept you away
my recollections are all that's left of you

youtube

5. BATTLEFIELD- SVRCINA
i will be your sword and shield, your camouflage
and you will be mine

youtube

6. DANCING ON BROKEN GLASS- Poets of the Fall
parade all your memories for the moments we shared
never fade away

youtube

7. ASHES- The Struts
you were taken from me but i can still see that smile
youtube

8. SECRET WORLD- Peter Gabriel
did you think you didn't have to choose it
that i alone could win or lose it

youtube

Full playlist on YouTube.

I want to share bits of an email that a (tragically no longer local) friend wrote to me, now that she's well into Guardian. We used to talk due South all the time and it pleases me so much that she's On Fucking Board with Guardian, too. She wrote:
"After my initial wiki read for background info, I know the source material is REALLY BEAUTIFULLY GAY, and for TV they changed it because of Chinese censorship laws.... But the thing is, the gay subtext is so vibrant that it just feels like REALLY GOOD slow burn, like in the Keira Knightley P&P when we get cuts to Darcy's hands to see how excited he was just to touch her hand

And maybe my thoughts on this are coming from a growing up in fandom that saw don't ask don't tell, and queer-baiting, and bury your gays, and worked with a bunch of broken cannon bullshit to build queer romances into beautiful, real things, but by episode 16 of guardian I am just feeling that their "subtle hinting of the gay" is BEAUTIFUL. Like, I just want this service Dom and his playful sub to tease each other FOREVER (five-ever even).

Which is why I'll watch the whole show and pretend like the ending NEVER HAPPENS

The chemistry between the leads is so intense that this feels like this decade's Due South."

Pretty much, yeah. Fuck I love this show.

Things I don't currently love: Realizing  I had no idea how much time I actually spent on the internet (I mean I knew it was a lot, but) and I'm trying to figure out how to do everything I want to do (on the internet) and still have an active life.

I'm also stressing out about hoop-jumping for unemployment benefits. I have to submit my report thingy by Sunday and I'm...not prepared. Ugh. Also, I found out that the reimbursement of my vacation time is going to put me in a tax bracket that'll make my government health insurance go from about $25/month (because I could pay it out of my tax credits...somehow? idk how these things work) to $500/month.

There's a new Dessa song out today and I know everything is All Guardian All The Time in my brain right now, but:
I think I could be good for you
I think you're overlooking your best move
I think I could be good for you
Somewhere beneath the surface you do, too

And I finally finished all the 520 Guardian exchange fics. Holy crap this is a talented fandom. I've got to get started on my own stuff, soon. Art probably won't happen until after July (I've got a couple small fanart pieces for other people I'm going to be working on until then) but I very much want to start toe-dipping into fic-writing. eeep.
clevermanka: default (Default)
Since I didn't have the time/energy resources to sign up for the first 5/20 Guardian exchange (tragedy!) , I made a Weilan YouTube playlist and am spamming the fuck out of my poor followers on Tumblr today.

Here's a fancy song-by-song list with Special Lyric Pull-Quotes (formatting thanks to [personal profile] no_detective ) if you want to go through it track by track. Apologies for not putting this beneath a cut. I kept trying to do so but the cut fucks up the formatting. Stupid <divs>.

I make zero apologies for my unironic love of 80s bands, boy bands, and angsty anthems.

1. SOMETHING GREAT- One Direction
i want you here with me
like how i pictured it
so i don't have to keep imagining

2. DO I WANNA KNOW- Arctic Monkeys
i don't know if you feel the same as i do
we could be together, if you wanted to

youtube

3. BODY TALKS- The Struts
you can be cool, you can be shy
say what you want, say what you like

youtube

4. GOOD TO YOU- Marianas Trench
i think you'd be good to me
and i'd be so good to you

youtube

5. SUCKER- Jonas Brothers
i'm a sucker for all the subliminal things no one knows about you
and you're making the typical me break my typical rules

youtube

6. I'M NOT CALLING YOU A LIAR- Florence + the Machine
i love you so much
i'm gonna let you
kill me

youtube

7. EVEN IF IT HURTS- Sam Tinnesz
even if it makes me bleed
youtube

8. I WANT YOU ANYWAY- Jon McLaughlin
i know you'll bring me to my knees
i know you're way out of my league
i know i can't afford the price I'm gonna pay

youtube

9. DRAMA- Bitter:Sweet
i won't be afraid
if i only have this chance to hold you

youtube

10. MINE- The 1975
i'm just fine 'cause i know you are mine
youtube

11. A THOUSAND YEARS- Christina Perri
all along i believed i would find you
youtube

12. SOFTLY OVER- Yazoo
wishing there was time enough
you tell me there's no time, but i can try

youtube

13. FINDING YOU- Kesha
when i say forever it's the goddamn truth
i'll keep finding you

youtube

13. DARK ON ME- Starset
i found in you what was lost in me

Because KU will only reimburse me up to 176 hours of accrued vacation, I'm taking a handful of days off between now and May 24--today is one of them. I had plans to get a whole bunch of shit done: laundry, grocery shopping, general cleaning. But the dryer broke (of course) and [personal profile] mckitterick wanted to go to the store with me (but had writing group today) so it looks like I'm down to just the cleaning, my least favorite of the options. Eh. At least I can crank the music while he's gone and since I won't be driving anywhere, I can get fucked up. That'll at least make scrubbing the stove top less tedious.

Speaking of music, I was listening to Young & Dangerous by The Struts last night (loudly, before [personal profile] mckitterick got back from class) and this is such a Weilan song.

As [personal profile] kazoogrrl pointed out in an email, it even sounds like Zhao Yunlan's laugh at the very beginning.

ETA:  okay yeah I'm making a playlist. *sigh* For, you know, this show that I  wasn't going to start watching.

Lizzo's new album (link takes you to the playlist of the full album on YouTube) came out yesterday and it's amazeballs start to finish. Physical CDs don't come out until next month so until then the YouTube playlist is gonna be on steady repeat.

I forgot to post about this week's Tuesday's collection, since I didn't actually put up a new collection for this week. My current collections (of which there aren't many) are all pretty thin. I like to have at least 20 reblogs/posts per collection and right now the most any of them have are fifteen except for another due South collection that's going up next week. So on cm.net I posted a link to an old collection: Boots.

I also forgot to post Thursday's Link Dump. Sorry. Habits are slow to build.

Not much going on to update y'all about except last night I was listening to a song by one of my fave country bands (now sadly disbanded). I sometimes have a hard time singing along because I start laughing over these lyrics:
Our wedding day was nothin' short of perfect
Everything so beautifully arranged
Then out of the blue right before we said 'I do'
She turned and ran like she'd gone insane
There goes the bride you can kiss that girl goodbye
I guess she really takes the cake this time

Those bold lines just kill me every. single. time. They don't give you time to recover from the hilarity of "kiss that girl goodbye" before hitting you with the "takes the cake" line and you guys country music lyrics can be so good sometimes.

Anyone else here feel like admitting to a love of country music?  I can enjoy anything from Bakersfield (I especially love that style) to modern country (which is a lot dicier) as long as the sound is good and the lyrics aren't offensive (or boring). The biggest factor for me is I'm annoyingly tied to things having a typical verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, (verse), chorus. Blues and most bluegrass don't really do it for me, alas.
