Music

Found via [personal profile] bonibaru [personal profile] lilly_the_kid is asking for vids that convinced you to watch a show. Go pitch your recruitment vids!

I find a lot of new music via fanvids, and I'd love to know what bands/albums/songs others discovered thanks to fanvids. Please share your music finds, as well as (if you remember) what vid used it. Or, you know, if you've got a killer song for a character-themed playlist, I'm certainly not gonna turn that down.

For anyone interested, I have a ton of playlists on YouTube (including one just for Angst) and I recently duplicated my Guardian playlists on Spotify. All the Guardian-related playlists except the 5/20 and 6/13 celebration ones are continual works in progress. If you like the stuff in those, you might check back every month or so to check for updates.

Found a new song to add to Deconstruction writing playlist this morning! Really love me my Music Feels, y'all.

I remember quite distinctly first discovering The Afghan Whigs' "66" via an excellent Queer as Folk (US) vid. It's on my mind now because it immediately went on my Wangxian playlist. You'll hear why.

I've actually found a lot of music through fanvids, so much so that it would be impossible to cite it all and trace it back to the specific vids, especially with fibro brain. A few have managed to stick in my brain, because the fanvids were so well-done and the song choice so perfect for both the mood of the vid and the fandom/character (though the ones that stuck are by no means the only examples like this). I first heard Natalie Merchant's "My Skin" in an absolutely heartbreaking Harry Potter character study. I had a lot of Nine Inch Nails' music, but I had never heard "And All That Could Have Been," which is now probably my favorite NIN song, until I encountered it in a Sumeragi Subaru tribute. It's still one of the most amazing fanvids I've ever seen. The Tudors was a little too OTT for me, but its set of wives made for a devastating fanvid set to Lana Del Rey's "Young and Beautiful." I hated Supernatural, but it made for some beautiful fanvids, and through them I found another one that went on my Shen Wei and Wei Wuxian playlists so fast it broke the speed of sound, David Usher's "Soldiering".

I've sometimes discovered new-to-me artists through fanvids, too. My first exposure to Billie Eilish was "Bury a Crown" in Guardian. I was introduced to Ellie Goulding through a jaw-dropping constructed reality Arthur/Eames Inception vid. I know there are others, but I can't think of them right now (doesn't help I lost a whole slew of vids in an external HD crash in...oh, 2009, I think).

Not a fanvid, but when the Hannibal RAW fanfic/art collection came out they asked the contributors to suggest a song for the playlist, and I discovered a bunch of music from that, alt-J and Noah Gundersen in particular.

I am very carefully not looking at your vid collections (right now) because that's how I get nothing done today.

OMG I saw a vid at a con for EQUILIBRIUM that was fantastic, so I watched the film, which was terrible, and I wrote fic to fix it. I have no idea where to find the vid now, but YES images that move are Pretty.

I don't think I ever watched a show based on a vid. Hm.

But thank you for your playlists! I am just cobbling together my own Weilan playlist out of other people's lists, I'm a very passive collector in Guardian, apparently. *g*

One of my fave songs that I keep trying to get people to vid is "Like you stole it" by ZZ Ward. (e.g. here) for Zhao Yunlan's thirst for Professor Shen. So far no luck. :)

One of your twitter links last week made me realize how good Hozier's NFWMB is for Shen Wei being badass - but you already have that on your Shen Wei list. :D
