Friday and payday

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] fantomas71!

It's the end of the work week, I have money in my account, good weather anticipated for the weekend, and tonight I get to hang out in a hot tub with really hot women. Wow. Life doesn't seem too bad right now. Oh, and another slip down on the scale: 153.4!

Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] 0verdrive was kind enough to drive my CRX to Kansas City so I could get my windshield replaced for $100 less than any Lawrence companies charged. So now I can drive the little grape straight into the sun and not be at any more of a disadvantage than the rest of the folks on the road. Hurray! It was seriously hazardous. As far as I know, it was the original (1989) windshield and it was incredibly chipped and scratched. So when the sun hit it straight on, I was pretty much driving blind. Scary. And not at all acceptable for driving back and forth to faire. Now I just need new wiper blades. I <3 my little car.

Reminder to those of you seeing Sellout tomorrow: I seriously doubt I'll be joining the dance revels on Saturday. I'm afraid a full day out at faire is too hard on this old body. While I might survive a couple hours of dancing Saturday night, I know I would be absolutely worthless for my day on Sunday. You all have a fantastic time without me and give my regards to the band, especially Brian and Alan. Thanks.

1. What personality trait in others makes you absolutely mental? Stupidity in all its many forms.
2. What personality trait or characteristic in yourself would you eliminate if you could? Forgetfullness.
3. What about your personality is your secret pride and joy? It's not a secret at all: I'm usually right. I'd say 95% of the time, if I take a stab at answering something, it's the right answer.
4. Is there a trait or characteristic you admire in others that you wish you owned? I wish I had my father's good luck.
5. Fast forward to you as a very senior citizen. What sort of character are you? Not sure. I hope I'm not wearing a red hat and a purple dress. Eccentricity is one thing. Outright fashion offense is another.
From [livejournal.com profile] fridayfiver:
1. When you are getting ready to leave your home, what are three things you always do? Check to make sure I have everything I need, get to my car, realize I've forgotten something.
2. What is the most annoying habit that you have? This would depend on who you're asking. The most annoying to me is I grind my teeth. But not many people notice that. Probably my most annoying habit in the eyes of others is that I have an absolutely terrible memory. Don't think that's a habit, but I'm sure it annoys my friends to no end. Sorry, guys.
3. If you could develop a new habit, what would it be? I would like to re-develop my good exercise habits. I had them once, but am having a hard time getting back in the groove.
4. Do you participate in any religious rituals? Haven't done what most people would consider "religious ritual" in a long time. But for me, something as basic as watching the sun rise on a quiet Sunday morning is a spiritual experience.
5. Describe one custom that is unique to your community or culture. I don't think it's unique, but I find it quite amusing how people in this part of the country consider a tornado warning a good excuse for getting drunk on the front porch. Free show!
From [livejournal.com profile] thefridayfive
1. What is the best dessert you've ever had? There's no way I can possibly choose. Tiramisu certainly ranks up there. Indian sweets (gulab jamun, burfi, etc.) are pretty damn fine, too.
2. Is there a dessert that just plain grosses you out? Nothing I've encountered yet. I don't care for fruity ice cream, but I don't find it repugnant.
3. Straight out of the container or with lots of toppings .... tell us how you like your ice cream. Generally, I like crunchy stuff in my ice cream. I'm picky about my ice cream. I prefer frozen custard.
4. Cookie dough, brownie mix, cake batter or the finished products? Finished products.
5. You've just invented a great new dessert .... what's in it and what is it called? Heh. Heh heh heh. smirk Wouldn't you like to know?

All hail the weekend.

[identity profile] fantomas71.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
Muchissimas gracias! Que bueno es de recibir estos palabras sobre el dia de mi nacimiento de una chica si linda!
(deleted comment)

[identity profile] fantomas71.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
No necesitas practicar nada.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
Ay, ¡Dios! Ok. Um...Entiendo todos que tu escribes, pero mi vocabulario no es...um, bastante grande (?) para esta conversación.

Yeah, now I'm really wishing I'd taken Spanish II this semester. It's embarassing how fast you lose it when you don't use it.

[identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I've been sitting here surprised that I am keeping up (seeing as how my last spanish class was taken in the Spring of 1984!

Although I feel slightly naughty for watching him compliment you so prettily in Spanish...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
I love the Spanish language. I think it's absolutely gorgeous. Really really really wish the classes here at KU didn't meet for an hour every single day. I'm not willing to give up my lunch hour for a whole freakin' semester. I should look into community classes.

[identity profile] radcliffe.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
Well you are far ahead of me! I never took language classes when I was a kid, and I have very little ear for it now, it comes very slowly for me- and here I am playing this part. *sheesh*

That said, Ron has some really good "learn spanish in your car" cds that might help you out!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/louie_d_/ 2004-09-10 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think Jason C still has the CDs.

I don't know that I would recommend them to anyone though. They are geared for people that are about to be travelling in Spanish speaking countries rather than learning Spanish as a second language. Lot's of useful phrases for travellers, but next to nothing on syntax and grammar. At least not on the first three (of nine) CDs.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
Luckily, I grew up hearing my great-grandfather's accent so although he never spoke a word of Spanish (long story), I have a good ear for pronounciation.

I'm terribly lazy by nature, so the "learn on your own" method has never worked for me. I need to interact with other students. Shame is a great motivator. ;)

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's my best translation (courtesy of Babelfish):

Muchissimas thanks! That good it is to receive these words on the day of my birth of a girl if is contiguous! You do not need to practice nothing. I am sure that beams everything that your beams with the same grace that exists in its smile. I am very outside practices, sure but it is my happiness to speak with you in any possible way. I go to east Olathe night also to practice with doctor Fassbinder and the Mayor of Canterbury... and think much about this day of my cumpleanos on the possibility of hot tub.:)

Heeeee! Wow, amazing that auto-translators are still so paleolithic. Seriously reminds me of the priceless items you can find at http://www.engrish.com/

Chris

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. That's just phenomenally...bad. A prime example of why language teachers tell students to not use those things! LOL!

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, it gave me the horse's laugh! Prolly scared Jim and Lisa. Why do they even still have that old engine up on the Web? Perhaps for this very joy of mis-translation.

Wow,
Chris

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it got "Doctor Fassbinder" and "Mayor of Canterbury" right at least.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed -- despite "catch and release robots" trodding our world, we have not yet reached the point where machines can replace us. And thank gawd for that!

Chris

[identity profile] fantomas71.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, depending on what language you wanna take, the local universities and community colleges all have language classes in the evenings...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
KU has one evening section for Spanish II, but it meets Monday through Thursday, 7:30 to 8:30. That would pretty much destroy my yoga and dance lessons. Grrrr. Stupid schedulers.

[identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know. Huge shock there.

D.

[identity profile] fantomas71.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
Not a problem. I love Spanish, as well. I've studied it a lot less than French, which probably shows.

What I like about both Spanish and French is that you still call people 'Dame' and 'Sire' to this day as a normal manner of address. Also the addition of a formal voice is very, very nice.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
I've studied it a lot less than French, which probably shows

Um, no, not really. But thanks for the modesty.

[identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually it does. He's bloodly wholly fluent in French. The sort of fluent that watches French films without subtitles and reads Balzac and Dumas in their original form.

D.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ay, encontré dos problemas. Una vez mas:

¡Feliz cumpleaños! Yo no supe que tu hablar Español. Yo necesito a practicar por nuestros conversaciónes, ¿no? Y gracias, también.

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
*snort*

...I'm afraid a full day out at faire is too hard on this old body...

I'll trade "old bodies" with you any 'ol day, m'lass!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
;) There's a lot on my old body that doesn't show, including mildly arthritic hip joints. It kills me to miss a dancing night, though. Of course, knowing me, I'll get home from faire and decide to go anyway...then get slapped down by Red for whining all day Sunday. LOL!

[identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
You won't get slapped down, but you will only be allowed to whine once.

D.

[identity profile] kijjohnson.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
So start your one whine at 9 and don't stop until 7.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Grin!

However, you obviously haven't interacted with Denise much. I shudder to think what she'd do to me if I tried that. At best, she would fall completely out of character, look at me sternly, and say "It is your choice to be here or not, my dear. So either enjoy yourself or shut the fuck up." And then I would feel like I did when I disappointed my father in 7th grade. The horror!

[identity profile] kijjohnson.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, maybe just henna the word "whine" in Arabic on the back of your hand.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooo. Thanks for the reminder. I wanna henna my fingertips and palms for next weekend.

[identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, staying wholly in character, it would be more likely that I would use the old standby of "there are times in life, my dear, when one must embrace the concept that sleep is only for complete pussies, and will be availiable to you again on October 23rd...until then, so long as you look spectacular, no one gives a flying fuck how crappy you feel. Now buck the fuck up and go grab some ass." Most probably followed by a firm swat on your magnificent ass to accentuate the point.

D.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well that last part, at least, doesn't sound too bad...

[identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, my dear, you of all people would appreciate the same.

I often say that age is nothing, mileage is everything. I have lately taken to saying that mileage isn't even the problem, it's the speed at which you were driven.

The heaviest part of the miles I carry and certainly most of the speed have come from 7-9 week bursts of insanity over the years, where I have chosen to fuck off caution completely and do everything.

It is the specific application of the adage "yield to the moment for it will not pass this way again".

So, if Sellout is playing, and you got it in you to shake it, do so with your eyes wide open that you will be playing a whore with soreass hips on Sunday...and really if you whine, you'll just have a bunch of wenches pointing and laughing at you for being silly...but believe me, I've done muuuuuuuch sillier things over the years...all in the name of not missing a moment of the fun.

D.

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! Yes, I *do* understand. Bruce had to deal with my whining last Saturday because of blistered toes from wearing the wrong shoes.

I know I'm pretty, ok, really lucky at how well my body holds up at 50 in the energy department. Some of it is good genes and some sheer bloody-minded stubbornness but either way, I'll take it!

One of my favorite outfits from childhood is that red/purple combination - was puprple pants and a bright red shirt

RE: teeth grinding - I have a bite plate I ware at night to prevent grinding cause it was giving me tmj and headaches

[identity profile] angelbedwell.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
I hope I'll be able to talk you into dancing with me at the closing gate at least once this run! Mistress Saffron and I had a blast with Ms. Ficklebitch...you don't even have to hop...just shimmy, a little? moui poco [is that right for a little bit?] ;)

mmm...hot tub, can't wait :)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
Now that I have an idea of pacing, I should be able to get out there and shake with you a bit. I do wish the drummers would play something besides "washing machine rhythm." An ephedrine tablet around 6:30 p.m. might not be a bad idea, either. It'd help with the low energy and the fact that by late in the day, my bronchial passages begin to complain.

Muy poquito, sweetie. Close!

If you buy your wiper blades at AutoZone on 6th (next to Movie Gallery), the fellas will come out in put them on for you, no charge!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooo. Thanks for the tip! And that's on the same side of town as me, too.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool, didn't know they had a store out there! Indeed, we'll have 'em on and ready to wipe within minutes.

Chris

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2004-09-10 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, wait, I bet RS meant the STORE guys would do it free. Even better! You'll be in costume, right? That oughta help....

Chris
