I signed on to read some of my fic at an event sponsored by my former graduate students. One of them (one who watched Guardian =D) is the organizer for the grad students' creative writing readings program and decided that the last event of 2019 would be all fanfic. I'm not reading any explicit porn (explanation below), so I'll pick something from Ghost Story, most likely one of the scenes with Zhao Yunlan, Zhu Hong, and Da Qing. My biggest concern is asya_ana 's language guide only has the cheaty (non-IPA) pronunciations for Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan. I mean, I'm pretty sure I'm okay on both of them, but I'd like to confirm. Can anyone please (literally) spell those out for me?

People have sorta ribbed me about not reading my porn aloud (like I can be shamed or something), but I don't want someone recording parts and them showing them out of context. Fic gets enough shitty press as it is. Not gonna feed into that mentality. If anyone ever wants to schedule a reading in someone's house where all agree there will be no recordings, I will absolutely read aloud anything I've written. That rim job in Lollipop was lovingly rendered, damn it, and I'm very proud of it! =D

Speaking of writing, I got nearly 2k words done for Ghost Story yesterday and realized I'd neglected to insert an important plot point. Whoops! So unless my beta encourages significant cuts, this fic is looking at hitting 80k words. Also, this is why I can't imagine posting as I write.

Gonna finish The Untamed either today or tomorrow. Episodes 38 and 39 are rough, y'all. I'm unclear on exactly what was going on with Lan Zhan and Lan Xichen's parents. I got the jist, but Lan Xichen seemed a little chill about the whole thing if my understanding was correct. Lan clan is uncomfortably chill about a lot of things, tho, so...

I think to a large extent the drama is unclear about that, and no take on it I've seen really explains all the weirdnesses perfectly. I've got my own take I find most logical, but I've seen wildly different reads that explained some aspects better.

But Lan Xichen's chillness about the whole thing regardless of the details is quite telling about the level of "these guys have way more damage than you'd think" in the Lan clan. (Lan Zhan really has his romantic shit together so much better than any other member of his family, as far as I can tell...)

It doesn't, alas. I probably could figure out IPA pronunciation but...I'd rather put those spoons into actually writing Ghost Story. =D

Would hearing the names pronounced on their own help? I could record myself reading them if so. Otherwise though, I'm helpless with writing out the pronunciations!

OMG Qik that would be an amazing resource! I was just thinking of going in and collecting sound clips of names from the show for podficcing purposes, but I think just having the names collected would be super helpful. <3

PS I had to repeat "Zhao Xinci" over a dozen times before my wife gave me a passing grade so having that particular name handy for listening to would be really high on my personal wishlist. ^^;

Zhao Xinci is an obnoxious name. On the show itself the actors can't seem to decide between the second or third accent, and it's genuinely confusing. I just chose the standard pronunciation.

This is brilliant, thank you so much! And yeah, the tones... Those are tricky in narration because you might want a rising inflection in English to indicate a question - but then it sounds like you're pronouncing everything in second tone! Basically I just try to come as close as possible to the right syllables and apologize to Chinese for what I do to tones.

You could copypaste the hanzi into Google Translate and have it read them out loud? There's a little speaker icon at the bottom left.

(FWIW, I am crap at the English respelling type thing, but it should sound a little bit like "Joo Khong" and "Daah Ching". You could also look at the pinyin to English correspondecies?)

Those respellings help a lot, thank you! I would've completely missed the k sound in Zhu Hong.

It's not a k sound followed by a h sound, it's one kh sound like e.g. the ch in Bach.

The IPA for SW and ZYL is in the chart section of the guide, just not in the "cheaty" section ;)
