I mentioned in a comment on bonibaru's DW about how the RWA meltdown reminded me of the puppies and the Hugos and welp, CALLED IT.

Am ensconced at a friend's* for the week. You know those jokes about how black people and white people keep their houses at radically different temperatures? I might actually die here. *laugh-cry emoji* But oh god it's so good to be in a quiet space with no expectations on me. He's having an ex over for brunch and since the ex and I got along,  I'm invited to join. \o/ I started my henna extra early this morning so I wouldn't be sitting at the table with a head full of mud. I wasn't due to touch up until next week but I wanna look good for NYE. Head full of mud isn't helping the overheating.

If he couldn’t offer the life Zhao Yunlan deserved, better that only one of them should suffer this lonely heartbreak.

SUCCESS! Yay! I'm so glad you think so! Fortunately for you (and Shen Wei, and Zhao Yunlan tbh), the angst will not last too long in this fic.

I mean, I know the most popular interpretation is along the lines of Shen Wei thinking he's unworthy of Zhao Yunlan's love, and/or believing it impossible for Zhao Yunlan to love "someone like him," but I have this (very unpopular) reading of Shen Wei in that I refuse to believe this. I don't think he has that kind of low self-esteem (his novel self does, but him in the novel is a very different character and actually has a good reason to deem himself unworthy, ie: being a literal Hell creature, which Dixingren are not, so...) and I do think he knows ZYL loves him, at least by the latter half of the show.

But! I also don't believe he'd ever make the first move; earlier on in canon because he'd want it to be Zhao Yunlan's choice, and later on because, like this snippet hints(?), he doesn't expect to survive the final battle and would never want to lead ZYL on like that. Would he have accepted if ZYL had insisted? I'd say yes, regardless of the point in canon, because I really don't think he'd refuse ZYL, well, anything - unless it was something that'd put ZYL himself in danger.

...As you can see, I have an unhealthy amount of headcanons about Shen Wei. My sister thinks I'm nuts. She might not be wrong ^^

100% same on all of this except the novel, about which I have hardly any knowledge so can't say. But yes. Yes yes yes.

Yeah I really don't like Ye Zun. At all. I have a difficult time picturing him in any sort of redemptive arc (perhaps not so much "a difficult time" so much as "am actively repelled by"). And while he sort of gets a behind the scenes one in Deconstruction, we never see him or the particulars of how it happens. I can read him in AUs where I kind of do the same thing I do with the RPF fic, but that's it. So yeah, *fistbump*
