Today's already been A Day, friends.

It started with the lovely fangirlishness gifting me this wonderful TLTR RPF smoking kink fic which inspired me to get out of bed this morning.

And then a comment on Chapter 5 of Deconstruction said "hmmm there seems to be a big part of this missing" and sure enough, like 500 words of Kinda Important Stuff was missing so I re-uploaded the chapter, replied (again) to everyone who'd already commented, and made the announcement on Twitter and Tumblr. But... apparently those words were there yesterday? I should have taken a screencap because I SWEAR those words were NOT on the AO3 screen this morning but umadoshi re-read it and said yes? everything was still there?

I don't even know. What's up with me and technology, y'all? I don't get it, and I live with it.

This isn't helping my general feeling that I'm not, uh, appropriately processing a shared reality anymore. I mentioned in an email to someone that it's a surreal experience to observe my own mental collapse. I can literally feel myself going crazy and it's... it's weird, y'all. I'm not sure I have the vocabulary to describe it, but if I ever do, it's gonna be a fantastic.essay.

ETA: Some of my Tech Fail greatest hits because they make me laugh.

My IT guy at KU once spent a month researching a problem I'd shown him (at least he saw it!). He said I was one of three people in the world, and the only one in North America, who'd reported that problem. Another time he gave me a new computer because the first one kept having errors nobody could solve, only to have the new computer repeat one of them within a month (we eventually moved to a different software program). Another time my computer caught on Actual Fire and had to be removed from the building.

I didn't work Friday but I'd popped in Sunday and there were two different emails from Friday that were 'these things aren't on our website,' so I looked and emailed back 'yes they are.' It's very strange, did the Internet just glitch recently?!?

I wish it was weird for that stuff to happen to me (and usually only me). Instead it's just, you know, my life. I edited the post with some additional tech shenanigans I've endured. I wish I'd better documented them.

I'm watching myself and the fam going nuts from stress. Forgetting things, losing things, being exhausted and distracted all the time, not functioning very well. I have to keep reminding myself it's not early-onset dementia, and stress really is having this effect on us.

I have to send the hot pot clips to my friend who brought all the fixings to the beach. She had the Little Sheep Hot in half the pot, but didn't add all the chili pack because bunch of tender white folk mouths, and it was good. Admittedly, when I got the hot version at a restaurant with a friend, I wasn't waving my hand at my mouth. I was sucking air in and resolutely staring into the distance while contemplating my (stupid) life decisions.

I don't know if I told you this, but I work on an ancient Mac at the office. This spring it decided any year after 2019 doesn't exist, so everything dated 2020 was now 1920. It's a known issue that someone wrote a script to fix, but old-ass computer + my boss = he refuses to download anything and finagled a "fix" that still gives me issues. Every time I mention the script he acts like I've never told him before, and then I forward the email with the info again.

Thankfully most places have broth options, so you can get ones that are not spicy. My friend bought a pot that has a divider, so we have one side for each. Last year I saw a tweet about how hot pot is great for a first date, because even if the date doesn't work out you still had hot pot. I love communal eating like that, and I swear the first time I eat indoors it will be at a KBBQ spot with friends.

My boss is currently on the phone with his developers in India, trying to reinvent the wheel, AKA walk them through designing an e-commerce process from the ground up (today it's about how to set up credit card processing). This has been going on for years, he could have bought multiple products at this point, but why when I can keep working on a Mac that is at least 23 years old, on an OS that is 22 years old?

I do acknowledge the existence of luck, though, and have been aware I do not have the good sort for going on about 40 years now. My father got all the good luck in our family. 🙃
