Sunday Snippet
More from Heartland. Please tell me you like it (even though it features Zhao Xinci). I need the serotonin hit.
Zhao Xinci didn’t look up from his newspaper when Zhao Yunlan walked in the door. The Barracuda’s rumbling motor faded in the distance as Zhao Yunlan focused on dragging her suitcase into the house. Finally inside, her father held her gaze a moment then shook the paper before returning his attention to it.
“You know I could sue the hospital for violation of privacy.”
“Yeah,” agreed Zhao Yunlan as she bent to unlace her boots. “And what would that get you? Five hundred dollars and a lifetime worth of dinners at the hospital cafeteria?”
Her father made a noise of displeasure.
“Do people in Chicago not close their doors?” he asked sharply. He nodded when Zhao Yunlan closed the door and threw the deadbolt. “I could just sue Zhu Hong directly.”
Zhao Yunlan tipped her head in acknowledgment as she removed her second boot.
“You’d probably only get two hundred but her husband’s a good cook.”
“I’m aware. That’s why I tried to pay him to cook for me while I’m…” he dropped the paper with one hand to wave his fingers at his chest. “He wasn’t available, but he gave me information for someone who was. I suppose since you decided to attend me during my convalescence you can go pick it up from her. Make yourself useful since you’d kill us both with your cooking.”

I've wanted to do a genderswap Weilan ever since you posted that one picture ages ago (I can't find a link, sorry) and I started writing this fic five days after seeing this one. It's definitely getting credit in my author notes ๐งก
*ETA: oh god I'm so Midwestern ๐

OMG! There's some true generational slang. 😆 (Yes, I have been on Zhao Yunlan's side of that very clear comment.)
...he gave me information for someone who was.
I wonder who that could be. 😉
Nice set up. And I think I'm going to enjoy Zhao Xinci in this one.

I'm LOLing at myself for having Zhao Xinci as a significant character in both long WIPs I've got going on rn. I have a good idea of why but jfc, whyyyy can't I for once come up with a longfic idea that doesn't reflect so many of my own issues?

And never apologize for Zhao Xinci, I love to hate that silver fox. :D

I still haven't worked out how I want ZYL's relationship with him to develop in this story. Is that something you'd be willing to chat (phone or email) with me about sometime? eta: it is fine to say no! believe me, I understand not having spoons!

Big Eden is such a great movie, and making them women is *inspired*
Thank you! It's such a perfect set-up for them. The cooking! And family health issues! With supportive side characters! So perfect. ๐งก

even thoughespecially since it features Zhao Xinci)!Fixed that for you, as the kids say. As the outlying Zhao Xinci fan, I love the deadpan quality of this conversation, with tension and antipathy but also humor--they both know the other one will get the joke, even when they're basically at odds with each other.
(Am I right in guessing that the good cook in question is going to be Shen Wei? Also, who is Zhu Hong married to?)

And Zhu Hong isn't married to any show characters, although I named her programmer husband James Lind lol. If he makes an appearance tho, it'll be in passing. I'm keeping this story pretty tight, so only Zhao Yunlan, Zhao Xinci, Zhu Hong, and Shen Wei will have significant screen time.

I thought vaguely "huh, relative of Jenny Lind?" and then I got it. LOL :)

he gave me information for someone who was.
Hee!

Same! I can't stand him so it's an interesting exercise writing him as a complex character, if not a sympathetic one.
