An Candlemas dawns bright and clear...well, shit

So it looks like we're not getting a repeat of last year's cloudy Imbolc. Rats. I sure wouldn't have minded winter being over. I fear the previous months being so mild and all, we're gonna really pay for it during February and March. Probably well into April.

There's nothing like a little retail therapy to lift the mood, though, right?

Daddy sent me some money for my birthday so I splurged on myself and bought the set of costuming books by the Costume Goddess. Even if these books do nothing but give me tips on building a better costume bra it'll be worth the $90. I didn't get the headpieces one because eh. Headpieces. I'm generally not a fan, and I already do a fine turban. But the rest of them look positively delightful.

Especially for [livejournal.com profile] shrijani and [livejournal.com profile] gamera_spinning is this icon by the inventive [livejournal.com profile] copperwise. She made it for Valentine's Day, but I think it's appropriate year round. Please credit her if you decide to use it.

I am So So So Tired about people complaining to me about, well, lots of things. Yes, I know. It's a terrible, terrible situation. No, there is nothing I can do about it. Please do not complain to me about that which I do not control. These include:
  • The other secretary being on vacation
  • The broken copier
  • The unavailability of the department chairperson
  • The slowness of the one available copier
  • The fact that you didn't take your GRE exam until too late for the results to arrive at KU by our department deadline
  • The Graduate School not getting acceptance letters out as fast as you'd like

If you want to ask for help on how to possibly work around any of these situations, I'm all ears. But I am not interested in listening to your random gripe. There is nothing I can do to actually change any of the above. I know I can do many things, but I cannot change the fact of any of those items. Please stop behaving as if I can.

Of course my attitude is not helped by the fact that I slept like absolute crap last night. Sad, unsettling dreams and I kept waking up so cold. Ugh. It's gonna be a long day.

    just a thought...

do you ever sleep w/ socks or slippers on? I used to have trouble sleeping because my temperature would change when I settled for the night & I would lie there under 3 or 4 blankets shivering (this is the woman who often walks around in 30 degree weather in shirtsleeves). I tried wearing my slippers to bed one night & it worked. I FELT much warmer & as soon as my temperature changed again in sleep (I usually heat up quite a lot once I'm actually out) I just kicked them off- didn't even wake up to do it.

Anyway, I know you hate being cold so I thought I'd make the suggestion.

The weird thing is, like you, I am NEVER cold after I fall asleep. In fact, I usually run a slight temperature when I'm sleeping (thank you Mr. Fucked Up Thyroid). So this was an incredibly unusual event. And I certainly wasn't cold when I went to bed. Just a bad night.

    Bear says...

he sometimes worries about me because I feel like I'm literally radiating heat sometimes. Of course, that means I'm actually asleep, which is always a good thing.

Sorry you had a bad night, hope tonight improves.

Yes, I do the same thing. I've been compared to a steam radiator. And I sleep still as death. The covers usually aren't even mussed in the morning.

I certainly hope tonight is better, too. Thanks.

Oooh. Sweet icon. *snatch* Will credit. :D

    Hurray! Glad you like.

Hey now - Angilas is obviously sick and Godzilla is pushing him to the hospital. Godzilla is a 100% hetero-lizard, though he actively supports kaiju with other lifestyle choices (http://www.onlyinternet.net/awinterrowd/kaiju/gallery/jaguar.html).

I dig the icon and will use it, thanks!

I don't know the Godzilla mythos, but...isn't Godzilla female? Or am I way off here?

    He could be a metrosexual

    [identity profile] gamera-spinning.livejournal.com 2006-02-02 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Y'know that's an excellent question. The Godzilla films are almost like drinking games for directors where they take turns interrupting each other an re-telling the story. We know that Godzilla had a baby Godzilla, called Minya, but we don't know with what. We know that Godzilla is a Godzillasaurus (I shit you not) and that his/her/it's genetic makeup has amazing recuperative powers, making him the world's largest mutant and potentially a candidate for the X-Men (coming soon Marvel's Ultimate Godzilla v. Wolverine).

But seriously, I don't know. I think he's more of an it, but a lot of folks think of him as a 'he' because of the deepset need to break things, kind of like a giant Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes.

Perhaps a self-inseminating hermaphrodite? That would rock.

but a lot of folks think of him as a 'he' because of the deepset need to break things

A lot of folks obviously haven't met the sort of women we hang out with...

Ah yes, freakishly common discussions of tits and sex. Monster sex, even. Expect no less from this LiveJournal.

you know, for some reason I thought Godzilla was a girl, too.

I only have really vague memories of watching the movie with my dad (I have no idea *which* movie it was either. Just lots of dubbed Japanese people freaking out because there was something going on in the ocean, and it was getting closer. Eventually the problem emerged as Godzilla. But for all I know, that describes the beginning of ALL the movies...)

I feel like somebody needs to take a poll. Are we the only ones who thought this about her/him/it?

    [identity profile] c3fyn.livejournal.com 2006-02-02 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah...they're sorta non-commital (or plain inconsistent, depending on your preference) regarding the sex thing. Myself, I see this as entirely proper, considering the Big Green Lizard is pretty much a Force Of Nature.

"History shows again and again how Nature points out the folly of maaaaan...Godzilla!"

    Does my little eye spy...GOJIRA?

Re: the complaining thing..little did you know that The Secretary is in fact the center of the Universe, and pulls the web just so...haha, no copier for YOU! Yeah. I know.

I had crap nighttime, too. And, minutes before I fell asleep, there were two very distinct shotgun blasts somewhere east of Broadway. Must have been Something In The Air.

Love the "size matters" icon. Don't know diddly about Godzilla, but it's still funny.

And the two words you wrote that just cracked me up... "retail therapy". Those are the two words of the day! Oh yeah... I need some o' dat!

One of my favorite things at a recent show :

    Small sign that reads:

"I'm Sorry, The deadline for complaints was yesterday"

Sound like that would be a great outbound message on your phonemail.

    [identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-02-03 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha!!! Now if only those gripes were on the phone I could at least make faces at the person talking to me. No, most of these complaints occur right here in my office.

I am not, however, above making a sign for my desk...
