That was my last free weekend...oh, wait
It wasn't really free, was it? Silly me.
Site Day wasn't awful. It sprinkled a little bit, but no downpour. Hurray! The scenario is pretty enjoyable. Bawdy jokes! Fabulous queen! Shirtless Robert Dudley! The Jolly Roger's pre-gate show is fantastic. Get there early for it if you can. Between the JRs and the I'm-not-sure-that-was-intentional dirty innuendos of the front gate skit, I laughed so hard I ran my makeup. Oh, and my "I woke up early so I made this hat" beret went over very well. It does look pretty cute. It's not really Azucena's style, but she can damn well suffer if it gives Lydia a bit more comfort in hot, humid conditions.
Sunday's Chess Match rehearsal went great. It only sprinkled on us a couple times. I don't know how we lucked out with that. I guess Lawrence got hammered and it poured on us all the way home. But Bonner Springs was fine, if a bit humid.
Once I got home from rehearsal, though, things started to go a bit downhill. I finished my new burgundy skirt, but just barely. It was rough going for a while. I pleated it last week (an adventure in itself) and basted the pleats down with a running stitch. Last night I attached the skirt to the waistband and hemmed it. Should have taken an hour, tops (and only that long because I did a decorative embroidery stitch for the hem). It took, oh, about three. Hours. Three hours. This gabardine is so slippery the pleats kept catching in the feed dogs and getting doubled over. So I turned the fabric over and sewed with the waistband against the feed dogs and the pleats up. But the waistband kept creeping and I'd catch extra fabric in the needle. Lots of ripping. Lots. Lots and lots of ripping. Irritable ripping. Irritable I-don't-mind-doing-this-when-I've-made-a-mistake-but-this-isn't-my-fault ripping. Gaaaaaaah. Finally, the hem. And of course, the fabric isn't any less slippery at the bottom, so it continued to move around. The bottom layer of course fed through faster and the top would bunch up a little so I have these tiny little tucks at odd intervals along the bottom. I should have basted the hem, but frankly at that point I couldn't even think about ripping out four yards of basted hem. I can live with the little wrinkles in the hem. Fine. Whatever. I gave up all hope of getting any more done that night, hung up the skirt and walked away from the sewing room.
So that means this week I'm a little...swamped. Second pair of linen bloomers, Notty's necklace, and at some point I have to tear apart my place to find my freaking red chenille paisley bodice because I don't know what happened to it after the photo shoot a couple weeks ago. I know I wore it home, but the damn thing has gone on walkabout or something. Grrrr. Then I need to start working on my ghawazee coat ensemble for the third weekend. Eeeek. Oh and forget all that noise about learning to drum in time for ME weekend. That's just not going to happen.

Although you probably won't have as much trouble with it since you...well, you use pins. Pins probably would have helped. Pin those pleats down! And sew slower. Also, consider basting your hem. Honestly, if I'd taken the time to do all those things, I would have easily shaved off an hour of blood, sweat, and tears.
Note: I had no problems with this fabric when I was using it to make Notty's circle skirt. I think it was a combo of slightly slippery fabric, my refusal to use pins, and creeping exhaustion.

And presto, I have learned from
I had a fair amount of sewing induced irritation yesterday, too, but the results were well worth it. You'll see on Saturday.

I didn't baste the hem on Notty's skirt--I just hand-rolled the hem as I went. But it's a very narrow hem. If you're doing a pleated dirndl style skirt for Azure, I would recommend taking the time to baste.
Hindsight is 20/20.

Speaking of skirts, do you know of any good online resources for skirt patterns?

So no, I'm not a very good resource for online patterns. Sorry.
