Not going. Again.
Mark down another year of me missing the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender. God damn it.
Here's a German Coca-Cola commercial that perfectly captures the mood of VLV. There are clips of the main stage, the ballroom jive contest, folks bopping on the roof of the parking garage (presumably at the post-car show band jam), dragging the main strip, hanging out at Ronnie Weiser's pre-party, and lots of random shots of folks hanging out in the Gold Coast.
I knew when my parents offered to fly me to Italy this summer, that nixed the chance for me to take vacation time and monetary costs for VLV. And I know Italy is a more than fair trade for Vegas. But still.
I feel really removed from the rockabilly community anymore. It makes me sad. It was my choice to distance myself by not going to local shows and social events when
0verdrive and I broke up. It was just too uncomfortable. But now I miss that part of my life. I miss the shows. I miss the live music. I miss the cars. I miss the clothes. I miss hanging out with crazy drunk rockabillies. There's crazy drunks and then there's crazy drunk rockabillies. Anyone who has run with that crowd knows what I'm talking about. These are people who can say "Go, cat! Go!" with no irony--and then take it to a whole new level of crazy.
VLV starts April 5th and wraps up on the 8th (it's always over Easter Weekend). Man, I wish I was going.
