Not going. Again.

Mark down another year of me missing the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender. God damn it.

Here's a German Coca-Cola commercial that perfectly captures the mood of VLV. There are clips of the main stage, the ballroom jive contest, folks bopping on the roof of the parking garage (presumably at the post-car show band jam), dragging the main strip, hanging out at Ronnie Weiser's pre-party, and lots of random shots of folks hanging out in the Gold Coast.

I knew when my parents offered to fly me to Italy this summer, that nixed the chance for me to take vacation time and monetary costs for VLV. And I know Italy is a more than fair trade for Vegas. But still.

I feel really removed from the rockabilly community anymore. It makes me sad. It was my choice to distance myself by not going to local shows and social events when [livejournal.com profile] 0verdrive and I broke up. It was just too uncomfortable. But now I miss that part of my life. I miss the shows. I miss the live music. I miss the cars. I miss the clothes. I miss hanging out with crazy drunk rockabillies. There's crazy drunks and then there's crazy drunk rockabillies. Anyone who has run with that crowd knows what I'm talking about. These are people who can say "Go, cat! Go!" with no irony--and then take it to a whole new level of crazy.

VLV starts April 5th and wraps up on the 8th (it's always over Easter Weekend). Man, I wish I was going.

It looks like an absolute blast! I can well understand why you'd be bummed to not get to go. Italy may well be better, but it's not the same thing at all.

Has enough distance ensued between that break and now for you to be able to attend local shows again?

It is. It really is. And this year is the tenth anniversary. I'm sure it will be a complete, as you say, blast.

Well...kinda. The details aren't something I care to go into in a public forum. I'll just say I've gone to a couple KC shows and it was mostly OK.

Here's hoping that as more time passes you'll be able to bring this sort of thing back into your world.

It's always a bummer to lose things you enjoyed simply because a relationship went south. I'm a great proponent for figuring out ways to keep the things you loved, if for no other reaon, it's not like that wasn't a huge part of your life too, if that makes any sense.

I can totally sympathize with that feeling. Not about rockabilly, but I still get a little wistful when gaming convention season comes up and I remember that I'm not going. 'Cos even when you move on and fill your life with other things it can be tough to leave some stuff behind.

Still - Italy does seem worth it. At least this year. :)

If it wasn't the third year in a row I'd cancelled for some reason or another, it would sting a little less.

*sigh* Know the feeling, darlin'.
Is it any wonder J felt like I'd brought him "home" when I took him to his first rb show?

I was going to write something quite like "It looks like an absolute blast! I can well understand why you'd be bummed to not get to go. Italy may well be better, but it's not the same thing at all." but not nearly as well, so she said it best.

:-( though.

I feel for ya. I miss Mardis Gras in the same way, except it was getting in a relationship that causes me to miss out on that.

You should go. You shouldn't let the past stop you if you miss it. It's not like he's an active part of the crowd anyway and odds of running into him are fewer than half. The Rockabilly Prom is coming up on the 13th. It would be a great time to dust off and get out there.

Curse you (mildly) for that clip. Now I not only feel a little homesick, but actually am interested in Vegas, which I normally hate. BOO!

I love Vegas! It's one of my favorite vacation spots. I'm all over the window shopping and the cheeze factor. Plus, I really enjoy walking around, gazing at people and architecture. Vegas has both in spades.
