Activism on a Friday afternoon

Oh for godssake.

Let me be clear: I don't post even a tenth of the activist alert items I get, because I don't use LJ as a political stump. Er, too much. But some things just make me want to scream. Fucking corporations. You can bitch about the liberal media, the conservative conspiracy, whatever. In the end, it's Big Money that's gonna fuck us all if we let them.

Tell the Postal Service Not to Stamp Out Independent Media!

Should Time Warner Set U.S. Postage Rates?

The United States Postal Board of Governors recently proposed to implement an unfair increase in periodical rates -- one that will have grave consequences for independent media - especially progressive publications like Mother Jones, Ms., The Nation and Sojourners.

In making this proposal, the Board of Governors rejected a plan from the U.S. Postal Service itself, and instead adopted a different plan -- one proposed by media giant Time Warner. Time Warner's plan locks in privileged low rates for bigger companies, and places a huge new burden on independent publishers.

Current postal policies have helped foster a vibrant political discourse in the United States and allowed the growth of alternative periodicals. We're working with our friends at progressive publications to gather 50,000 public comments to the Board of Governors by this coming Monday night, April 23rd. Will you sign the petition? Our project partners at Free Press will deliver your comments in person to the Chairman of the Postal Board of Governors on Tuesday.

In this era of media consolidation, we must act to save independent publishers that are threatened with bankruptcy. With broad public pressure, we can reverse the regulators' proposal and restore the postal system that has served free speech in America so well.

Tell the Postal Board of Governors: Reject Time Warner's plan, and save independent media in the U.S:
