Explorer to Firefox

OK, this is annoying.

Does anyone know a way to transfer bookmarks in IE over to Firefox?

MenuBar - File dropdown- Import....

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I imported them, and they show up in the pulldown menu, but nothing happens when I select them.

Dang.

Nope. I mean, yes. I tried it. No go.

Fucking IE7 install. I didn't even get a choice!

[identity profile] harmfulguy.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps you should try exporting them from IE7 (File | Import and Export...) into a file. Then, on the Firefox side, open the bookmark manager (Bookmarks | Organize Bookmarks...), and import the file (File | Import...) from there.

Yup. Tried that, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] adammaker. It went swimmingly, until they didn't work when I got them imported.

Hmm... Can you open the exported (presumably bookmarks.htm) file in Firefox, and click on the links?

Also, for the bookmarks that don't work: Right-click on the bookmark, select "properties" and see if the URL is showing up in the "Location" field.

Charming. Now, the files that I imported over? They all say "Empty."

WTF?

Well, technically, I don't own this computer...

Perhaps you could borrow a hammer from university supplies?
That should make it OK, in the area of both hammer and nail belonging to KU.

When I (horribly mistakenly) changed over to IE 7, I often found my bookmarks empty. I also would have it do NOTHING when I typed in a URL. As in, didn't even appear to be trying to find the address. NOTHING.

I gave it the finger and reverted to 6.

Looks like IE 7 is somehow 'infecting' your Firefox with the EXACT SAME ISSUE.

Oh, joy and happiness. :(

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
So far the solution response to this issue (which is campus-wide) has been rather laughable. I was told "oh, we have an uninstall option available for everyone!" Um, yeah. Didn't work. I told them it didn't work at 11:57 a.m. today. So far, *cricket*cricket*

Well, it's MS, what can you expect but the biggest cluster fuck possible?

You have my sympathy, though.

Misery loves company.

*sigh*

There's always the tedious:

Copy, paste, bookmark again.
or maybe check Lifehacker (http://lifehacker.com/software/bookmarks/call-for-help-sync-bookmarks-between-ie-and-firefox-210343.php)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem is, I can't even see my bookmarks anymore. So I don't have any way of actually copying the URLs. They all show empty. And nothing comes up with a right-click Properties either.

Really fucked up.

[identity profile] geekmom.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I stop storing most of my bookmarks on my browser. I use either del.icio.us (http://del.icio.us) or Google Bookmarks (http://www.google.com/bookmarks) to store my bookmarks, so they're available anywhere I go and sorted by tag.

That doesn't help your current situation, but it's good to keep in mind for future bookmarking pleasure.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
That is an excellent suggestion. I hadn't heard of such a thing! I'll most certainly do that from now on.
