Wireless

I'm up to my eyeballs at the moment, but wanted to get this out there.

CREDO Mobile (formerly Working Assets Wireless) is offering a promotion where they will buy you out of your current wireless phone contract, up to $200.

CREDO website here.

Curious as to why you might want to switch?

CREDO Mobile donates to the ACLU to STOP wiretapping, donates over $50 million to service- oriented and progressive nonprofits — including the ACLU, supports the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Democracy Now.

AT&T and Verizon cooperate with the Bush administration's warrantless spying on American citizens, contributes more money to political campaigns than almost any other company — mostly to Republicans, spends $90 million on lobbying — more than Phillip Morris or Exxon, censored Pearl Jam for critizing Bush during a concert webcast.

above cut and pasted from a promotional email

So. Just a thought if you're wanting to do something in addition to sending another letter to your senator.

Edit: here is the text of the email, mostly intact:
In a key vote Monday morning, just nine senators joined Sen. Christopher Dodd to stand up against President George Bush and his cronies at AT&T© and Verizon©.

At stake was a bill to grant blanket immunity for phone companies that aided the Bush administration plot to illegally eavesdrop on Americans.

But then something unlikely happened. By evening, a groundswell of public pressure from citizens like you and me moved Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to pull the bill from the floor.

AT&T and Verizon are now preparing for the next battle over telecom immunity, and so are we.

If telecom immunity is passed by the Senate, we may never know how much Verizon and AT&T helped the National Security Agency listen in on Americans' phone calls — or how much they're helping now.

What can you do? If you have a cellphone from Verizon or AT&T, you can keep on sending them your money and supporting them — and Bush — in their cover-up.

Or you can join CREDO Mobile — which is fighting to expose the administration's illegal spying program and bring all those responsible to justice — including Bush himself. CREDO Mobile is brought to you by your friends at Working Assets. It's the same great wireless service we've offered for years, with a new name to reflect our commitment to causes we believe in.

How different are we? Take a look below. What you see may disturb you. For a remedy make the switch now to CREDO Mobile.

Edited to remove table that wouldn't paste into LJ, but includes the information above, plus some

If you think your privacy is important, then it's time to think about CREDO Mobile. Switch now and we'll buy out your current contract (up to $200).*

Sincerely,
Michael Kieschnick
Co-founder and President
CREDO Mobile

P.S. In case you're wondering, you'll get the same quality coverage, phones and accessories with CREDO Mobile that you enjoy from any major provider. Sign up today and we'll give you a FREE Katana® II camera phone ($249 value) and a FREE solar charger ($100 value).*

* All with a two-year CREDO Mobile service agreement. Offer subject to credit qualification. Contract buyout: We’ll credit your CREDO Mobile account (up to $200) 30 days after we receive a copy of your prior carrier’s termination fee charges. Details to follow by mail.

I have working assets/ credo.. and LOVE them. LOVE LOVE LOVE them! The customer service is on it and I have never had any problems with them.

I would highly suggest that people switch. They will also recommend books and send letters to politicians in your name.

They're awesome. I signed up when they were only a long distance company, back in 1991. Now I've got their cell phone plan *and* the credit card. I can't talk them up enough.

Wow, that's good to know.

That's so cool! But I don't see the special offer up on their website (or even their special offer page (http://www.credomobile.com/index.cfm?event=showSpecialOfferMatrix)).

The info is included in the email. I'll copy and paste the text.

I'd love to be the honorable elitist, but with what I have on my plan and pay and what they charge, I'd be going deeper into bill-paying, and I just can't do that right now. Then there's that little disclaimer Offer subject to credit qualification. which usually screws me. And "buying out my contract" by crediting my account doesn't help me pay the upfront termination fee. *le sigh*

I had Working Assets and loved them so much for years, it bums me out that I can't continue my support.

I wish the right-wing funding companies were this up-front about their policies:
"We support Bush's war in Iraq! We love no-bid contracts, which allow us access to your dollars in the form of TAXES you pay!"

If I was in the USA, I'd be switching to these CREDO guys.
