Malabsorption

Driving to yoga last night, I heard on the radio the line-up for Lollapalooza 2009. Holy shit, people. Depeche Mode, Tool, Jane's Addiction, Beastie Boys, and...wait for it...Lou Reed. Lou Reed is still performing? Ha! This almost makes me want to book a flight to Chicago for that weekend, but there's that whole nasty business of, you know, being outside for the actual show. And three days in a row? Um. No. Also, Chicago in August sucks hairy donkey balls. Been there. Done that. Nearly died.

MWF Calorie Restriction is going well. Yesterday was a super low calorie day. Much lower than necessary according to the JUDDD restrictions, but I was fine. I had a shitty day yesterday and I wanted to indulge in some emotional eating but I persevered and was down two pounds this morning as a reward.

A few weeks ago, [livejournal.com profile] roya_spirit mentioned something to me called Fructose Malabsorption. I was all "no no, not my issue, that's not me" because I didn't want to add yet another limitation to my ever-dwindling food options. But after doing a lot of reading yesterday, I think yeah. This is totally me. In a sick and ironic twist, the things that rid the body of yeast overgrowth can exacerbate Fructose Malabsorption symptoms. This could be why I haven't felt the omg-I-feel-great quick turnaround that the Candida Support people tout on their website. So yeah. Good Times! After Memorial Day weekend--because I am not trying this during the three days I'll be at ConQuesT--I'm going to start an elimination diet. Basically I'll just eat meat and leafy greens for a month. I'm debating if I should also eliminate alcohol. I mean, logically I should, but for the sake of my mental health and the well-being of those around me, I'm not convinced it's a good idea.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot to mention, nobody in this area does the simple Hydrogen Breath Test for this condition. Nobody. KU Med used to do it, but quit several years ago. My guess as to why? There is no medication to cure the things this tests for. So there's no money to be made there. Modern health care is so awesome.

I should make an LJ tag for food issues that are different than allergies.

I never did get a lick of sewing done for the weekend. Not even a pretty new dress for Saturday night's parties. =(

Whoa...that fructose malabsorbtion thing does sound quite like what you have been dealing with.

I will hope for you that it is actually the problem, because it would be so fabulous for you to figure out what will actually work for you, even if following the diet necessary to deal with it might be trickier than others.

As for eliminating alcohol...it doesn't look like it would be absolutely necessary, but you may have to step to drinking other things than you generally do. Hopefully with a little experimentation, you'll find a good choice.

Um. I don't know what you mean by this. I'll drink anything except watery American-style beer, sticky sweet stuff, and cheap grain alcohol. I'm not what you'd call a picky drinker.

Meaning, you may have to take up with straight alcohols rather than any beers, wines or blended drinks (wherein mixers may well have HFCS, etc.)

The Hy-Vee reduced sugar lemonade is pure lemon, water and reduced cane sugar, so ti's an alternative that would be safe. Citrus are some of the "safe" fruits with this malady.
You may be right about some mixers, according to some of the websites, some people have problems with some of the sugar substitutes used in some mixers such as sorbitol, which is implicated as troublesome for IBS sufferers as well.

Lucky for me, I haven't touched one of those foul concoctions called "mixers" in well over a year.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)

I know what you're talking about, although to a bartender, anything that isn't alcohol which goes in a drink is a "mixer."

That reminds me.. the light Mike's Lemonade was just fine for me, but the regular Pomengranate Lemonade? KILLED me.

Whoa. That Lollapalooza lineup. WHOA. I mean, it's like my senior year of high school all over again. Tool? Jane's Addiction? Depeche Mode? Beastie Boys? Fuckin' A. That's crazy.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I know!!! I thought I'd slipped into some alternate reality made of awesomeness for a moment. I mean...wow!!!

I would give my right ovary to see the Beastie Boys live! Holy Crap.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen them (Hello Nasty tour, 1998 or 1999, thereabouts) and they put on a fantastic show.

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Lolla = wow!

I haven't seen Beastie Boys live since, well, Lollapalooza 1994.

Damn for no longer having overnight childcare.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if the Beastie Boys continue the way they're going, you'll be able to catch their first tour after James Jr. leaves for college.

I'm sorry you're wrestling with such crazy food issues, and I really hope that this makes something work for you. *hugs*

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I am so tired of feeling like crap no matter what I eat. I think the first week of my All Carnivore All The Time diet will be pretty great. Anything to just not feel like shit, right?

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)

/me gets to hang a gold star on the Sometimes Roya is Right tree?

And I'm sure your guess as to the tests is spot on.

7x filtered vodka has been working well for me lately. That and a little reduced sugar lemonade, with a splash of Diet Ginger Ale. Reeefreshing!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you filter that yourself or is there a brand you buy?

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I found this odd bottle at Alvin's the other day, Platinum 7x filtered Vodka (http://www.rainvodka.com/platinum.htm).
I admit, I got it for the cool-looking bottle. I was mixing it, who cares, right? It wasn't bad at all. About as good a Skyy.

Either way, it went well in the lemonade/ginger ale, and J got two new bottles for his wall.

:thinks hard, checks debit card online statements, makes near guess:

I'm thinking it was right around $20 or so.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not too bad! Thanks. I'll look for it.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll probably have some on hand tomorrow night :)

I'll gladly join you on the Carnivorous venture.

We'll eat like cats.
Meat, meat with more meat and some leafy stuff to round it out.
I've read to watch out for iceberg lettuce, but I stick with romaine myself, don't see the point of lettuce with no other nutrition in it.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. Iceberg lettuce is teh nasty.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2009-05-20 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
HA! I must have bought a cheap bottle of wine or a sixer of Mike's or something with it.. the price tag on the 750ml bottle clearly says $11.99.
