Splint

I complained about the pain when I forgot about my finger injury and attempted to bend the finger. [livejournal.com profile] cedarsong and [livejournal.com profile] everflame suggested making a splint. I used half a stick from a popsicle and fastened it to the inside of my finger with the bandages. It works pretty well and I can type with it.

I feel a little bit like the woman in The Piano.

Even more mosquito bites this morning. WTF. I remember this happened last year, too. It's earlier this year by about three weeks. Hmmm.

Vitamin B complex helps to reduce your attractiveness to mosquitoes. I'm an absolute magnet for them and since I started taking B complex, there's a drastic difference.

Sorry about the finger! ::blows a healing kiss to it::

I've tried that Vitamin B trick, but it didn't work for me. =(

Thanks, though!

Well, poo!

Woo for successful splint!

Yes, thank you for the suggestion! Perfect icon, there.

Bats

Clearly you need a bat :)

Hope the bites heal quickly.

I love me some bats!!!

But maybe not in the house...and that's when I'm getting bit.

In the house would be errrr interesting.

Does Lawrence allow bat-houses? Maybe you could put one on the car-port? It might reduce the number of biting insects in the general area...

Yeah, so far there's no ordinance against them. Yet.

I've thought about getting one, but I don't think I'd affix it to a structure. Maybe a tree, one well away from the house that has a lot of shrubbery surrounding it. I don't want to deal with scraping and scooping guano off the garage and foundation. Ew.

Some things I looked up that may help I hope? G'luck!
* eat less salt
* use unscented products
* dry off your body
* avoid sweets
* wear dark colors
* Mosquito hate garlic, so eat a lot of garlic
* Some people swear by carrying a dryer sheet or wiping
themselves down with dryer sheets before leaving the
house. Others apply a mixture of vanilla (not
vanilla extract, but pure Mexican vanilla) and olive
oil.

Interesting!

The vit b complex is on the same track I have used for years. I have used vit B1 (thiamine) for years especially out at kcrf. You have to take enough that you are basically overdosing on the stuff. B vitamins are water soluble so you eliminate the excess thru your urine and your sweat. That is where the mosquito attractiveness comes in to play. I pretty much live with vit b1 in my system from may 1st until the first really good freeze. And as for bat houses: the bats like it to be 10 - 15 feet off the ground on a south facing surface (tree, house, garage, whatever). They like for it to be very warm. We have had one for years but it started in the wrong place (facing east in a tree). There is also some stuff we discovered before going out to Gaea in may - it's a mixture of vermiculite (like the stuff used in potting soil), herbs and essential oils. You sprinkle it on the ground (around the deck etc) and it repels mosquitos for up to 3 weeks. It worked for us at camp, and so far has worked pretty well here at home around our deck. The mosquito population this year has gone to new highs because of the high heat/humidity and rain every 3 days we have had for the past couple of months. Anywhere there is any amount of standing water will be a nursery for the little buggers. We have started dumping and refilling the dog bowl everyday. Even the little saucers under the planters on the deck have taken to being infested so those are emptied every couple of days. yuck! I feel your pain sister! They think I'm a great meal too!

Maybe I need to just try the B1 instead of the complex? The complex did nothing for me last year. I'm already taking sub-lingual B12.

Ick - I hope your finger heals quickly, and that you find a mosquito remedy. And if you do find a remedy, let me know, because this year and last I was total mosquito bait, and this year it's ticks, too (four bites and counting)...Damn bloodsuckers...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-07-02 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Ticks freak me out big time. Ugh.

*shudder*

I never found a remedy last year, either. They just...stopped biting after a while. It was weird.

[identity profile] theoneinblue.livejournal.com 2009-07-02 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
They freak me out, too. The first one induced a grossed-out near-panic attack, although by the third one I was mostly just shuddering and then getting down to the business of removing it. Quickly and completely.

BTW, would a mosquito net for your bed at least provide some kind of a shield during the night?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-07-02 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm. I don't know if it would help or not. But Fetish jumps on and off the bed all night. I don't think that would work so well.

[identity profile] theoneinblue.livejournal.com 2009-07-02 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, must not entangle the kitty!

Roya_spirit is always right. :)

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)

Again. Chiggers.

Mosquitos tend to bite limbs, chiggers go straight for warm places where clothing meets skin. And it can take some time for the bites to start itching after you've gotten them.

The hand thing puzzles me tho... that *does* sound like mosquito. The torso bites.. not.

Re: Roya_spirit is always right. :)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-07-06 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, babe, you're not right on this one. I know from chiggers. These weren't chiggers.

Re: Roya_spirit is always right. :)

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2009-07-06 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)

Then owie even more so... it's hard to get those lil buggers out of the house. Well, either one, really.

Re: Roya_spirit is always right. :)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-07-06 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It happens while I'm sleeping and I know we don't have chiggers in the bed. [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick hasn't even been nibbled. So yeah, they're buzzing around nibbling on me as I slumber. EW.

Re: Roya_spirit is always right. :)

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2009-07-06 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ick.
and I know you take supplements, so the B-complex thing doesn't seem to help. gah. Have you thought about a citronella sort of oil in the bedroom? Personally, I hate the smell of it, but there's GOT to be something else similar that would deter them.

Re: Roya_spirit is always right. :)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-07-06 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I've only gotten one bite in a week, so I think they might be dying off. Here's hoping.
