Ow

I got my seasonal flu shot this morning. The clinician was one of the most gorgeous women I've ever had the pleasure to see--much less get stuck by.

But oh my god my arm is killing me now. This is worse than a tetanus shot. It's difficult to hold my arm up enough to type. And mousing? Oh dear god the pain. She must've stuck me in a really weird spot. I've never ever had this level of soreness from a flu shot.

If it's swelled then an antihistamine might help.

No visible swelling. Just wow the ache. Like a tetanus shot ache. But worse.

I remember my shot was unexpectedly painful and I remember my joints ached in the afternoon, like I had a fever. I was fine the next day, however.

It's totally worth it--I'll be over this faster and with less grief than the flu. It's just so unexpected! I've never had this problem with a flu shot, and I've been getting them for years.

I think this year's shot is particularly painful for some reason. My arm hurt for several days afterwards, and the nurse warned me that hers was sore for a few days as well.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-10-20 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Makes you wonder what they had to do to this one to make it effective. And makes me really glad I got the flu shot 'cos it must be a really nasty strain they predicted this year.

I thought I would chime in, too. My flu shot also hurt this year and it never usually does. I especially felt the liquid going in. Ow!

I asked others who got it the same day, but they had no complaints. I was all ready to blame the shot-giver (shooter?) for being in a bad mood that day!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The shot didn't hurt at all. I didn't even feel it. But oh my goodness, afterward! This morning, I'm stiff from the left side of my neck, all the way across my back--probably from holding my arm weird.

But I still say it's better than dealing with the flu.

You Pasteur-ists are just right in there with the Darwinists, always trying to destroy our civilization, aren't you?

Serves you right.

I know. I bring everyone down with me. Mwa-ha-ha-ha.

I'm glad to know that, in a sick sort of way.. all the more reason why I won't be taking these shots. I had enough trouble with the nerve damage from the tetanus they coerced into taking after the accident.
Loading up on the D3, sunshine and EFA oils...

I'm not sure whether this is an argument in favor of or against getting the shot this year... I was planning on going tomorrow. Hmm.

[identity profile] mckitterick.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, the worst that'll happen is you'll have a deathly reaction to the Thimerosol they use as a preservative. Which is why I'll be missing the shot this year. Again. Plus, y'know, I've built up immunity from having enjoyed the flu already.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Last year, [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick got the flu and whined about it for ages, telling me to please make him go get one this year. Then he got a strain of flu a few weeks ago (who knows if if it's the one this vaccine prevents) and because he didn't feel like making the effort to get a shot, he's being all self-righteous about not getting it again this year. Whatever.

For what it's worth, I've never regretted getting a flu shot, and I've been getting them since 1995.

I tend to get the flu with more regularity if I get the shot. I'm going to risk not getting it again and fall back on out traditional family remedy/preventative - Elderberry Wine. It got my Great Uncle through the Great Flu Pandemic of 1918. I figure it'll do me just fine...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it tasty? Where do you buy it?

Edit: Because I need more reasons to drink wine.

I buy it from a liquor store on Shawnee Mission Parkway. It's very tasty, if you like berry wines. I'll pick some up - you can try it Monday. You just have to watch to make sure it actually made from Elderberries - some "Elderberry Wines" just have elderberry flavoring. :(

Ooooo. Yum! I'll look for it.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2009-10-24 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
There's some available locally too. I saw a handwritten ad along with some bottles of extract and (juice, maybe?) at the Juice Stop out by 23rd HyVee. If I can remember at some point next week, I'll pop by from work. Or you can send me a reminder. :)

Yeah. I got mine in the ER two weeks ago and I couldn't believe how sore I got. We (me and the nurses) were all walking around making that noise you make by sucking air through your teeth and wincing, holding our shoulders.

Glad to know I'm not alone!
